Coaches Q&A with Jim Roth:
Q. What kind of leadership did he show as a young player?
A. At the quarterback position, it is that tougher and you have to have a certain level of leadership at that position. He handled it really well his first year as a starter.
His intangibles make him special.
Q. What are his strengths at quarterback?
A. The way he handled things as a first year starter as a sophomore was impressive. Running the offense is number one and providing leadership is number two. He has a very strong arm.
I thought he did a good job with all different throws last year. One of the things that was most impressive was how he threw the ball down the field for a young quarterback.
It’s important to throw the ball deep, especially in our offense. We have always been a strong run oriented offense that plays action. The deep ball is a big part of our offense and for him to do so well as a sophomore was great.
He has good vision, especially since he is 6-foot-3. The one thing we didn’t do much with him last year was run the ball more. This year we will run him more and also do some sprint out passing with him.
Q. What is he working on in the offseason?
A. His short passing game. He is working on that part of his game and all of the little things. He wants to be the best at his position.
He has a big frame and being a young guy he’s starting to grow into his body. I have noticed already a difference in the way he is executing with a lot of throws and his overall accuracy.
