Coaches Q&A with Frank Gay:

Q. What kind of leader is he?

A. He has great leadership skills. He leads by example.

Q. What are his strengths at quarterback?

A. He’s the smartest quarterback in my 26 years of high school football that I ever coached. The best way to explain it is, when you can give the keys to the car to a freshman the first day and say run with it and the offense is yours. He got it.

He can make any audible he wanted to, from day one.

He’s your typical drop back pro style quarterback. He’s an exceptional runner, but we couldn’t afford to run him his first two years of varsity. We didn’t have a backup for him. So, he was the guy and we couldn’t afford to run him the way we wanted to.

But now we have a backup that is going to be a freshman who is very good. This year we’re going to open up the offense and let him carry the ball more.

He’s very accurate throwing the ball either in the pocket or when he’s on the run.

He’s very good at throwing the short passes and his best asset is throwing a deep ball.

Q. When he does play defense, what are his strengths?

A. He started last year on defense. But this year we have more depth and will play in spots. When it comes down to it, he’s our best man-to-man cover guy. So, if we need him on the field, he’s going to be on the field.

He has good coverage skills and a good tackler.

Q. What’s he doing in the offseason?

A. He has been working out with Jim Cantafio and goes their every week. He works on his strength and speed agility.

Q. Final thoughts on Michael?

A. The coolest thing about him is, he’s a gifted athlete and one of the most humble kids you have ever met in your life. He works with younger kids and is a good role model in our community. He treats everybody the same. He’s a first class kid.

Schools of Interest: As of 6/27, he has interest from Duke, North Carolina, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Temple and Vanderbilt

  1. Michael’s brains obviously came from his grandmother Patty who wisely chose Bud as her life long mate. Our congratulations to Michael for his accomplishments which give us the occasion to laud his grandparents. Randy
