13 Point 2nd Quarter Propels West Catholic over Archbishop Wood

PHILADELPHIA:  For the first twelve minutes of Friday night non league match-up at Philadelphia Northeast Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium it looked has if it was a return of the glory days for the Archbishop Wood Vikings but then the Burrs behind a 13 point second quarter would come back to down the Vikings 28-17.

 

The Vikings would get on the broad first has they took the opening drive sixty yards on fifth teen plays before James McFadden would nail a 20 yard field goal to give the Vikings the early 3-0 lead. The opening drive took 9:44 off the clock.

 

The Vikings would add to the lead on their second drive which went 51 yards on 4 plays when Sean McCartney would hit Vince Furlong for the 43 yard touchdown. McFadden would add the extra point to give the 10-0 lead.

 

The Burrs who entered the game ranked 6th in the Easternpafootball.com Small School rankings would respond behind the three headed monster known has Curtis Drake, Raymond Maples and Rob Holloman. Drake would get the Burrs on the broad first with his 18 yard run. Tim Carroll would add the extra point cutting the Viking lead to 10-7.

 

On the next Burr drive it would be Holloman that would give the Burrs the lead with two yard touchdown run. Carroll’s extra point would be blocked by Furlong to give Burrs the 13-10 halftime lead. “It was very important they (Wood) were playing real tough” is how Holloman would describe the importance of the 2nd quarter.

 

The Burrs would continue to tack on to the lead with their first drive in the 3rd quarter. They drove 69 yards on 7 plays before Maples would punch it in from 10 yards out. Maples would put the Burrs up by 11 with the old Statue of Liberty play on the PAT.

 

It would be Holloman that put the final nail of the Vikings coffin with his 26 yard touchdown run. Carroll would add the extra point giving the Burrs the 28-10 lead.

 

The Vikings wouldn’t go down with out a fight has McCartney would sneak his way in from a yard out with under a minute left in the game. McFadden would add the extra point to cut Burrs victory margin down to 28-17.

 

Up next for the Burrs is a date with AA division rival Kennedy-Kenrick Wolverines  on Friday night at Norristown High School. While the Vikings will open their AAA portion of the schedule when they travel to take on the Saints of Neumann Goretti Saturday night at the South Philly Super Site
