sspotyd12eastThere is no question that linebacker Alex Anzalone is the emotional leader on the team. In his final high school football game, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker had to over come a tough first half in the state championship game.

Anzalone fumbled twice that led to both Aliquippa touchdowns in the PIAA Class 2A championship game. In the second half his team rallied and scored 10 unanswered points and the Spartan defense limited Aliquippa to 2-for-6 in red zone opportunities to claim their first PIAA championship with a 17-14 victory over WPIAL champion Aliquippa (15-1).

In the end he can add a state championship title to his already impressive resume.

On offense Anzalone rushed for 1,442 yards on 165 carries and 30 touchdowns this season. He had more than 100 tackles on defense. He rushed for 2,674 yards in his career.

His team became the first football team in Berks County to win a football state title.

But Anzalone isn’t done yet with high school football. He has one more game before he heads to Notre Dame in January.

He will be playing in the Under Armour All-American game and its is slated for 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 4, 2013, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be televised on ESPN.
