Q & A with William Penn Charter head football coach Jeff Humble

We sat down with Humble and talked to him about his team for the 2012 season.

How is your off-season going this summer?

The kids worked real hard and are ready for camp.

Who do you have coming back on offense?

Let’s start with the line. I have a center that is about 5-foot-10, 260-pounds who is a smart kid. His name is Mark Opaliski. At left tackle I have Notre Dame recruit Mike McGlinchey. He anchors our line. Patrick McInerney is our right guard. At left guard is Frank McClinchey. My right tackle will be Anthony Campanelli.

Right now we don’t have a quarterback. We have the kid that started last year, Kevin Murphy. I also have a sophomore Patrick McCain. I have a senior Alexander Chovanes. The quarterback spot is open and all three players are going to battle for the spot. We want to throw more this year.

We are set at the running back position. My tailback rushed for over a 1,000 yards last year and he is back. His name is Eric Neefe and he is a pounding type back. He has nice size. We have another kid that is more of a speeder. His name is Eric Berger.

At receiver we have Daryl Worley returning. On the other side we have Corey Kelley. He is fast and can run. We have another kid that is 6-foot-3 and his name is Freddie Perri. He can catch the ball.

Who do you have coming back on defense?

We have Mike McGlinchey back on the defensive line. Mark Opaliski and Anthony Campanelli both on the line. We need to find that other defensive end. It might be Terrence Collins.

We have pretty much all of our linebackers back. They are young but have some experience with Patrick McInerney, Frank McGlinchey, Eric Berger and Eric Neefe.

Our secondary is solid. We have Daryl Worley are leader back there at safety. James Biggs-Frazier who is going to play corner. Corey Kelley is the other corner.

Who do you have coming back on special teams?

Daryl Worley returns kicks and punts. Biggs-Frazier and Kelley will be back there too. All three of those kids are athletic and fast. As far as punter and kicker goes it’s an open competition.

League

I think Episcopal Academy is very good. Malvern Prep is always really good. It’s a tough league. All the teams are tough. Each week is a war. The league is modeled after the Ivy League. Our league from top to bottom is solid. We are all on pretty much the same level. I love playing in the league. It’s so traditional and so old school.

To have a successful season you have to?

If we stay healthy we are fine. If we loose two or three kids we are in trouble. All the kids are playing two ways. Quarterback is a key spot for us if we are going to have a successful season. We need someone to step up.

You have to be a little lucky and have the ball bounce your way. We have a great bunch of kids. But we don’t have depth. The kids work hard and want to win. They understand what it takes to win. It’s a matter of going out and play.

Home Opener

William Penn Charter opens home against Samuel S. Fels on September 8th
