DISTRICT 11 NOTES (week 4 & 5):
RUNNINGBACKS:
In week 5, Caden Henritzy of Northampton rushed for 162 yards and 2 td’s in their win over ES South to end the night with a school record 2,882 career rushing yards. Tyrese Brandon held the old record when he rushed for 2,767 yards from 2016-19. Henritzy also joined the “40 td” club in week 4 and now has 42 career td’s. Brandon holds the school record with 61 career td’s scored and Tommy Rohn is in 2nd place at Northampton with his 43 career td’s that he scored from 1996-99. Alex Achenbach of Williams Valley went over 5,000 career rushing yards in week 5. Achenbach is the 13th player in the District to rush for 5,000 yards and is currently in 12th place. Harry Hall of Northwestern moves down to 13th place with his 5,065 yards that he rushed for from 2012-15. Achenbach has scored 61 career td’s so far, slotting him in a 4 way tie for 32nd place all-time in the District. Dan Tavani of Notre Dame (2000-03), Blake Bowman of Tri-Valley (2009-12), and Saquon Barkley of Whitehall (2012-14) all scored 61 td’s in their careers. After week 4, Achenbach was tied with Mike Tracy of Marian Catholic who scored 60 td’s from 1978-80. Colm McGroaty of Mahanoy Area went over 3,000 career yards rushing in week 5 and now has 3,056. McGroaty is the 5th Golden Bear to reach 3,000 yards. Ziggy Dudash (1997-99), Joe Weidle (1992-94), Mike Gaval (2009-11), and Danny Lawrence (2017-20) are the other 4 Bears. Dudash holds the school record with his 4,033 yards to go along with his school record 69 career td’s. McGroaty has 48 career td’s which is tied with Lawrence for 2nd best at Mahanoy behind Dudash. Luke Stevenosky of Minersville and Dalton Clymer of Northwestern joined the “40 td” club in week 5. Stevenosky has scored 42 td’s and Clymer has scored 40 td’s. Players with 200 yards rushing the last 2 weeks were Achenbach (255 yards in week 4), Matt Machalik of Palmerton (319 yards in week 4 and 238 yards in week 5), Stevenosky (224 in week 4 and 272 in week 5), Trey Tremba of Parkland (262 yards in week 4), Alex Ecker of Pleasant Valley (201 yards in week 4). Machalik’s 319 yards set a new school record. Mike Stasko held the old record when he rushed for 248 yards vs Wilson in 2015. Cade Sawyer of Southern Lehigh has scored 4 td’s in weeks 3, 4, and 5. Machalik (1,166 yards), Achenbach (1,136 yards), and Stevenosky (1,106 yards) all went over 1,000 yards rushing in week 5.
In week 4, Machalik scored 5 td’s upping his total to 75 career td’s which moved him ahead of Jason Killian of Schuylkill Haven (71 td’s from 1989-1991) and Austin Scott of Parkland (74 td’s from 2000-02) on the all-time District list. Killian & Scott were both on State Championship teams in their senior year. Machalik scored 3 more td’s in week 5 to up his total to 78 td’s moving him ahead of Evan Culver of Saucon Valley who scored 77 td’s from 2013-15. Machalik is currently tied for 11 place all-time in the District with Dylan Rabuck of Williams Valley who scored 78 td’s from 2014-17.
QUARTERBACKS:
Machalik went over 5,000 yards passing in week 4 and currently has thrown for 5,253 yards and 54 td passes. Danny Darno of Notre Dame went over 4,000 yards passing for his career in week 5. Darno has thrown for 4,142 yards so far. Trey Dogmantis of Whitehall has thrown for 37 career td’s and is now tied for the school record with Mike Gnall who threw for 37 td’s from 2002-05. Whitehall has 8 other quarterbacks who have thrown 30 or more career td passes. They are, Matt Shultz (32 from 1993-95), Chris Hudak (32 from 1995-97), Brad Wagner (30 from 1999-02), Chris Polony (33 from 2008-10), Nick Shafnisky (31 from 2010-12), Giani Sinatore (33 from 2013-15), Zachary Gilbert (32 from 2014-16), and Ethan Parvel (33 from 2016-17). Junior Christopher Fritts of Southern Lehigh and sophomore Peyton Falzone are the first 2 qb’s to throw for 1,000 yards this season. Falzone leads the District with 1,039 yards and Fritts follows with 1,018 yards. Falzone is the 4th sophomore at Nazareth to throw for 1,000 yards in a season. Tom Silvius (1,229 yards in 1987), Ryan Fry (1,850 yards in 1996), and Anthony Harris (2,600 yards in 2018) are the other 3.
Quarterbacks who threw for over 200 yards the last 2 weeks: Cole Lazorick of Jim Thorpe threw for 231 yards in week 4 in which he threw 3 td’s and scored 3 td’s. Lazorick then threw for 306 yards in week 5. Caden Mengel of North Schuylkill threw for 208 yards in week 4 and 249 yards in week 5. Cole Ordway of Easton had his first career 200 yard game in week 5 when he threw for 231 yards vs Bethlehem Catholic. In the same game Beca qb, Cayden Vassa also had his first career 200 yard game (212 yards). Brody Breiner of Panther Valley threw for his first career 200 yard game last week vs Minersville (271 yards). Fritts threw for 269 yards in week 4 and Falzone threw for 244 yards in week 4.
RECEIVERS:
In week 4, Layne Yoder of Tri-Valley went over 1,000 career receiving yards. Yoder currently has 1,042 receiving yards. Justin Yescavage of Jim Thorpe had 2 big games in weeks 4 and 5. Yescavage had 184 yards in week 4 and 190 yards in week 5 to up his season total to a District leading 655 yards. In the process, Yescavage went over 1,000 yards for his career. The junior has 1,105 career receiving yards. Jack Inglis of Southern Lehigh (1,023 yards), and AJ Lozano of Notre Dame (1,020 yards) also went over 1,000 yards in week 5. Mason Kuehner of Nazareth joined the “2,000 yard” receiver club. Kuehner has caught 131 passes in his career for 2,005 yards with 17 of them going for td’s.
Career reception District 11 rankings: Joey Flail (North Schuylkill) 142 catches (12th all-time), Jareel Calhoun (Central Catholic) 141 catches (13th all-time), Damian Tyminski (Pen Argyl) 139 catches (14th all-time). With these 3 players occupying slots 12 thru 14, that moves Bob Frederick of Allen down to 15th place all-time with his 138 receptions that he had from 1971-73. Kuehner is in 20th place with his 131 receptions.
Career reception yardage District 11 rankings: Flail 2,327 yards (12th best), Tyminski 2,257 yards (14th best). In between Flail and Tyminski is Zack Gillen of Wilson who had 2,301 yards from 2018-21. Kuehner is tied for 26th best all-time in the District with Brady Evans of Williams Valley. Evans gained his 2,005 yards on only 93 receptions that he caught from 2019-22. Twenty eight of them went for td’s. Evans is one of three District 11 players to have 2,000 career receiving yards and have less than 100 career receptions. Brian Ayers of Freeland caught a total of 85 passes from 1985-86 that netted 2,067 yards (24.3 ypc). Brad Walter of Wilson caught only 75 passes which netted 2,017 yards (26.9 ypc).
Career reception td’s: Flail 37 (3rd best all-time). Flail was tied with Paryss Marshall of Catasauqua who caught 36 td passes from 2011-13. Nick Ryan of Shenandoah Valley has 25 career td receptions and is currently tied for 26th place all-time in the District with Gillen (2018-21) and Shane McEvoy of Lehighton (2005-07).
