The last two years Delaware Valley has opened their season up against a team from out of state.
In 2010 they defeated El Toro of California, 27-13 and in 2011 they defeated Island Coast of Florida, 24-14.
Delaware Valley works each year on building its program into a winning program. This year they open the season in-state against District 11 power, Parkland Area.
“My philosophy has been in order for us to talk about ever becoming the best we have to beat the best,” said head football coach Keith Olsommer. “Playing teams like El Toro and Island Coast gave us that opportunity and now you raise that level significantly when you play a team like Parkland. We want to become a program like Parkland.”
In 2011 the Warriors went 7-4, losing to Nazareth Area in the first round of district play, 43-28.
We sat down with head football coach Keith Olsommer to break down his team for the 2012 season.
Q & A with Delaware Valley head football coach Keith Olsommer
How is your off-season going this summer?
We have had a good off-season. It seems every year football season starts a week earlier and it creeps into early June now. If you don’t prepare you won’t be ready for the season.
You have to keep up with everyone else and get ready for the season.
Who do you have coming back on offense?
A couple of key players for us are the tight end, quarterback and center. They are four-year players.
We were in a tough spot few years ago. We had kids get injured and we brought up four freshman and they all played significant time.
Quarterback Bryan Schor started 90% of the games for us and it shows. He is a key guy for us. He is a tremendous leader and has a great arm and good player.
Schor passed for 1,474 yards and 14 touchdowns. He rushed for 223 yards and seven scores.
Returning tight end Connor Decker is very good. Decker caught 18 passes for 298 yards and one score.
Center Jack Fagan is a real good player.
Who do you have coming back on defense?
We have some good physical players up front. Fagan plays defensive lineman.
We have a good corner in Cory Savarese coming back.
We are hoping to find the right spots for a few kids. We have an opportunity to be decent this year.
What do you have to do to win your league?
This year someone has to come up with a answer to Scranton High. They have all their kids back. Valley View has a solid nucleus of kids back. Scranton Prep is a real good team. Those three teams are going to be difficult to deal contend with.
To have a successful season you have to?
Stay healthy, limit turnovers, injury free and you need a little luck. We need to be strong up front.
