Valley West Sr. RB rushes for 248 yards in Spartans win
KINGSTON- Derrick Simms had a career night at Spartan’s Stadium in Kingston racking up 248 yards rushing on 24 carries as the Spartans turned away previously unbeaten Berwick 33-15. The Dawgs would have their hands full right from the start having some difficulty stopping the Spartan’s run option, with Simms scoring early off the option pitch.
Berwick would have a 15-7 lead in the first quarter without any yards on offense and no first downs. Sr. RB Matt Cashman scored on a kick return of 85 yards right after the Spartans took the early 7-0 lead. The Dawgs would gain the lead on a defensive touchdown, with Jr. LB Jordan Stout going 85 yards to paydirt. It would be the first and only time Berwick would see the lead and the closest they would come to the Spartans on the night.
Valley West would take a 22-15 lead in at half time accumulating over 200 yards on the ground with 13 first downs. Berwick, on the other hand, only had 42 yards total offense and just 3 first downs in the first half.
The Spartans added to their lead in the second half with a field goal, safety and touchdown outplaying the Dawgs on route to the 33-15 win.
Valley West really took it to Berwick tonight and had a very good game plan going in from Head Coach Pat Keating. The option pitch to Simms really had the Dawgs back on their toes early, with Simms ripping off big yards.
On the defensive side of the ball the Spartans were able to shut down Cashman a bit, although Berwick was in catch up mode most of the night, which hurt the run game.
CJ Curry did not get the protection as in the past three games and was on his back quite a bit tonight. The rush from Valley West was pretty extensive and the offensive line was unable to stop the ensuing pressure.
The Dawgs were outplayed tonight, by a team that was certainly ready for them to come to town. Berwick will look to rebound next week as they travel to Selinsgrove, in what should be another tough task.
Until next week…happy football!
