Berwick tops Cougars 49-7

BERWICK- The Dawgs were able to get it done tonight at Crispin Field in dominating fashion with a 49-7 win over the Hazleton Area Cougars. With the win Berwick has secured a home playoff game, tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 1pm. Their opponent will either be Dallas, Crestwood or Valley View, which may depend on the outcome of the game between Dallas and Lake-Lehman to be played Saturday afternoon at Dallas.

Another game the Dawgs will be interested in this Saturday will be Scranton and Abington Heights which will be played at “The Pit” home of the Comets. If Scranton, who is a heavy favorite, wins. Berwick will then receive the top seed in the District 2 class AAA tournament. That means if they win their first playoff game its back to Crispin Field for the District 2 championship game. If Abington Heights were to knock off Scranton, they would receive the top spot and Berwick could end up at “The Pit” for the District 2 title game. With all that said, let’s get to tonight’s win over Hazleton Area.

Berwick would dominate early, only giving up 22 total yards on defense in the first half and taking a 29-0 lead in at the half. Finding paydirt for Berwick would be Sr. RB Matt Cashman with two td’s via the ground game, Sr. WR Jeff Steeber on a 52 yard reception from Jr. QB CJ Curry and Sr. LB Travis Potter on a 41 yard fumble recovery and scamper. Potter would recover the fumble after Sr. Zach Ladonis stripped the pigskin loose.

Berwick would tack on three more td’s in the 2nd half with scores from Cashman on a 10 yard scamper, second team QB So. Dallas Arner on a 15 yard dash to paydirt and second team RB So. Nate Maczuga on a 49 yard scamper.

Hazleton Area would find the goldzone just once on the night, with Sr. Brad Zanette notching one in, with the final score Dawgs 49, Cougars 7.

On a side note, everyone would like to wish a get well soon to equipment manager Jim Beaver who is in the hospital and of course was not at tonight’s game. Jim is a big part of Berwick Football and has been close to the team for many moons. Get well soon Beav!
