Bulldogs Overcome Five Turnovers to Beat the Slaters 39-33

matthewweek22016aSlatington, PA – Northern Lehigh gave Bangor two early turnovers and five total but still get their first win of the season by a score of 39-33. Northern Lehigh racked up 400 plus yards of offense.

Northern Lehigh fumbled on their first possession and Bangor’s Joey Schrader took it in for the touchdown. John Raub added the extra point and Bangor has the early lead 7-0 with 8:07 remaining in first quarter. Bangor running back Saivaughn Vass scores on a 28-yard touchdown run after another bulldog fumble and Bangor has a 14-0 lead.

The bulldogs get on the board with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tekoah Guedes to tight end Damion Rodriguez. Kicker Daniel Belfonti adds the extra point. With 1:45 left in first quarter, it’s Bangor up 14-7. Bangor adds a late first quarter touchdown on a Brandon Scholato 23-yard run. Extra point is no good. It’s 20-7 Bangor after one quarter.

Northern Lehigh fullback Kellen Hendrix scores on a two-yard touchdown run. After the extra point, its 20-14 with Bangor leading. Late in the first half, Bulldog running back Brandon Belfonti scores on a one-yard touchdown run. The extra point is no good and the game is tied at 20 at halftime.

Northern Lehigh drives into Bangor territory to begin the second half but Bangor forces another bulldog fumble. Schrader returns it 82-yards for a Slater touchdown. Slaters lead 26-20 early in third quarter.  Bulldogs then score on a Belfonti one-yard run and a Mason Seiler 31-yard run in back to back possessions to give the Bulldogs a 33-26 lead after three quarters.

The Bulldogs are driving in middle of the fourth quarter and look to run out the clock (Bangor had no timeouts left) when the slaters force another fumble and return it for a 42-yard touchdown. Jacob Fries is credited with the touchdown. Raub adds the extra point and the game is tied at 33-33 with 3 minutes and change remaining in the game. Northern Lehigh responds with a Belfonti six-yard run to escape with their first win. Northern Lehigh wins 39-33.

Key Players for the Slaters were Joey Schrader and Saivaughn Vass. Schrader had two fumble recovery and returns for touchdowns.

Key players for the Bulldogs were running back Brandon Belfonti, running back Mason Seiler, and quarterback Tekoah Guedes. Belfonti had 265 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns. Seiler had 10 carries for 117 yards.

Bangor (0-3) hosts Salisbury (1-1) while Northern Lehigh (1-2) hosts Notre Dame Green Pond (3-0). Both games are next Friday evening.
