DISTRICT NOTES: District leaders are now listed at the bottom.
RUNNINGBACKS: Dylan Rabuck of Williams Valley rushed for 262 yards and 2 td’s in their 20-14 win over Line Mountain. Rabuck, the only junior on the first page of the chart for running backs now has 800 yards rushing and 7 td’s this year. Mike Mitchell of Pleasant Valley rushed for 199 yards and 3 td’s vs Pocono Mountain West. Mitchell has rushed for 652 yards and has scored 13 td’s. Richie Zahodnick of North Schuylkill switched back to quarterback and rushed for 226 yards and 2 td’s in their win over Mount Carmel. Darnell Ferrell of Central Catholic keeps his hot streak going after rushing for 161 yards and scoring a total of 7 td’s in their win over Dieruff. Ferrell had 6 rushing td’s and returned a kick-off 82 yards. The 7 td’s ties the school record held jointly by Komlan Lonergan and Rob Hauke. Lonergan’s 7 td’s came vs Bob Stem’s Bethlehem Catholic team in a 70-40 win in 1998. Hauke scored all 7 td’s in a 49-0 thrashing of Crestwood in 2002. For the 4th week in a row, Ferrell has scored 4 or more td’s that included 2 rushing td’s and 1 kick-off or punt return td. Ferrell leads the District with his 20 td’s (30 for his career) but lost his lead in rushing yardage to fellow EPC North player Thomas Melchiorre of ESN. Melchiorre who directs the triple option for coach Dailey has rushed for 897 yards this year and has scored 14 td’s. Ferrell is 29 yards behind with 869 yards. Melchiorre has also thrown for 371 yards and 5 td passes. Sone Ntoh of Emmaus scored 4 td’s for the second week in a row and now has 10 for the season. Cam Lutz helped Pine Grove get their first win of the season when he rushed for 210 yards and 2 td’s vs Upper Dauphin. Mike Stasko of Palmerton broke the career td record at the school in their win over Bangor. Stasko now has 36 career td’s which moves him ahead of Chris Siracuse who had 33 td”s from 1996-98. Stasko is also closing in on 2,000 career rushing yards (1,882) and 1,000 career receiving yards (917). Mitch Daniel of Notre Dame scored 2 td’s last week and now has 31 for his career. Jamaal Brome of Stroudsburg came back from an injury last week and scored 2 td’s and now has 30 for his career. Job Goodman of Wilson also returned to action vs Northern Lehigh after missing the last 5 quarters. Goodman entered the game in the 2nd quarter and ran for a 91 yard td run on his second carry. He would rush for 212 yards and score all 3 of the Warriors td’s in their 42-21 loss. His 212 yards is the 5th highest at Wilson for a single game.
QUARTERBACKS: Javon Clements of Bethlehem Catholic had his first career 200 yard passing game. Clements threw for 243 yards and a td in their win over Liberty and now has 727 yards this season. Ethan Persa of Central Catholic threw for 276 yards and a td vs Dieruff. Garrett Perschy of Palmerton broke his own school record this past week after just setting it the week before that. Perschy threw for 264 yards and 2 td’s vs Bangor. He now has 30 career td passes tying him with Chris Lucykanish for the school record. Lucykanish, a 4 year starter, threw his 30 td’s from 1990-93. Deven Bollinger of Northwestern went over 1,000 yards passing on the season. Bollinger now has 1,075 yards with 12 td passes and takes over the District lead for Brandon Keyes of Pleasant Valley. His yardage is the 8th highest at the school and his 12 td’s ties Frank Dangello’s sophomore year for 3rd place at Northwestern. Keyes now has 20 career td passes. Jake Cirillo of ESS went over 5,000 yards for his career and now has 5,056. His passing yardage places him in 26th place all-time in the District moving ahead of Alex Atiyeh (Dieruff/BECA 2003-05), Dan Kendra (Central Catholic 1971-73) and Tony Gomez (Pottsville 1999-01). He now has 52 career td passes tying him with both Phil Stambaugh (Pius X) and Dan Harding (Nazareth) for 23th place all-time in the District. Travis Stefanik of Nazareth joined the “4000 yard” club and now has 4,145 yards passing for his career. That moves him up 4 spots into 43rd place and squeezes him in between 2 Anthracite players. Adam Knoblauch of Tamaqua and Brian Kennedy of Marian Catholic. Stefanik’s 46 td passes ties him for 33th place all-time in the District with Michael Bernhard of Allen. Joe Young of Freedom is now exactly 100 yards behind Jeff Haberl’s school career record of 3,393 yards.
RECEIVERS: Alston Wolfe of Saucon Valley has caught 10 passes for 295 yards this year with 6 of them going for td’s. Trevor Cunningham of Northwestern has now caught 23 passes for 607 yards and 9 td’s this season. His yardage is 3rd best and his td receptions is 2nd best at Northwestern for a single season. A coincidence that the top 2 receivers in the District only caught 1 pass each last week for a combined 0 yards. Justin Richardson of Pleasant Valley caught 1 pass for 1 yard and Desmond Boykin of Whitehall caught 1 pass for -1 yards. More importantly however, is that both Pleasant Valley and Whitehall won their games. Boykin still leads the District with his 31 catches whie Cunningham takes over the lead for yardage (607) and td’s (9). Tim Walter of Southern Lehigh now has 1,675 career receiving yards. That places him just outside of the top 10 all-time in the Colonial League. He’s currently 1 yard ahead of former Spartan Jeff Smillie and 2 yards behind Nazareth’s Chris Garr. Ryan Greene of Catasauqua, Jon Moran of Notre Dame and Cunningham of Northwestern all went over 1,000 yards receiving for their careers. This is the first week this year a receiver didn’t catch 3 td’s in a game.
Week 5 Trivia: Deven Bollinger of Northwestern went over 1,000 yards passing last week to become the 9th freshman to do accomplish that in District 11. How many of the other 8 can you name and who did first?
Week 4 Trivia: Desmond Boykin of Whitehall had 207 yards receiving last week vs Liberty. That is not a school record. Who holds the school record for most receiving yards in a game at Whitehall? HINT: He was a “one game wonder”. Question #2… I’ll make it a little bit easier. Boykin became the 8th Zephyr to go over 1,000 yards receiving in their career. How many of the other 7 players can you name? In a 31-14 Thanksgiving day loss to Emmaus in 1988, Fred Delucia had 9 catches for a school record 228 yards. In Stan Luckenbill’s last game as head coach, Delucia caught 4 passes from starter Dave Swartley in the first half. Then, in the second half Luckenbill inserted sophomore qb Mike Buskirk. Buskirk connected with Delucia 5 times for 155 yards and 2 td’s. Question 2 answer: Mike Peters, Adam Skrapits, Joel Cesare, Jim Potocnie, Matt Hamscher, Tyler Artim and Conner Sullivan.
Week 3 Trivia: Joe Young of Freedom (3,001 career passing yards) needs 393 passing yards to break the school record. Who holds the record with 3,393 passing yards for their career at Freedom? Jeff Haberl threw for 3,393 yards from 1995-96. Haberl would throw for 1,443 yards (16 td’s) as a junior and then throw for 1,950 yards (19 td’s) as a senior. He would complete 71 passes for 1,459 yards and 14 td’s to his bookend wide receivers Matt Kacanda and Trent Clark.
Week 2 Trivia:
No player in the District rushed for 200 yards last week. When was the last time that happened in the regular season? There’s been a player in District 11 rush for at least 200 yards in 51 consecutive regular season weeks and counting. I’m currently back to 2010 (week 10) researching to find a 200 yard rusher.
Week 1 Trivia: Mitch Daniel of Notre Dame rushed for over 1,000 yards (1,096) and caught passes for over 500 yards (525) in 2015. Who is the only other player in District 11 to accomplish this? Hint: He played D1, but didn’t play offense. Kyshoen Jarrett of East Stroudsburg South rushed for 1,027 yards and caught 33 passes for 591 yards in 2010. Jarrett had a successful career at Virginia Tech making 249 career tackles from his safety position.
