HERSHEY – Lancaster Catholic received the opening kick off and rode the running of Jordan Stewart down the field. Stewart’s great running set up a seven yard TD pass by Kyle Smith to Tyler Purvis.
Delone Catholic had problems on the quarterback center exchange on its first possession giving the ball back to Lancaster Catholic. This gave Lancaster Catholic great field position. An illegal shift by Lancaster Catholic negated a big TD run. Lancaster Catholic scored anyway when Stewart dove in from the one-yard line. Delone was able to block the extra point try making the score 13-0 in favor of Lancaster Catholic.
Delone was unable to muster any offense and had to punt. Lancaster Catholic scored again on its next possession when Smith found Purvis again in the end zone. Smith found Purvis again for the two point try making the score 21-0 in their favor.
Delone was unable to move into scoring range once again and had to punt. Kyle Smith continued his stellar night on the next possession when he found Quinn Houser for another TD pass which went for 40 yards. The extra point try was no good.
Lancater Catholic got the ball back again after another ineffective offensive try by Delone Catholic. Smith was able to find Purvis for a three-yard TD pass. Lancaster Catholic got a two point conversion by Stewart making the score 35-0.
Delone punted again giving Lancaster Catholic one more try before the half. Smith almost had another TD pass but it was incomplete in the end zone and time expired for the half.
Delone Catholic got the ball to start the second half. A nice pass by Austin Brady to Wesley Smith got the ball down to the Lancaster Catholic 24 yard line. Delone got its only score of the game when Dustin Reed ran for a 22 yard TD. The extra point was no good. The score was now Lancaster Catholic 35 Delone 6.
Lancaster Catholic had a long sustained drive but it came to end when Matthew Haines picked off a Smith pass. Delone was unable to move the ball and had to punt from the five-yard line. Jordan Stewart scored again for Lancaster Catholic on a 12 yard TD run making it 42 to 6.
Delone got one more chance with the ball but did not have enough time to score with time expiring and giving Lancaster Catholic another District 3 championship.
NOTE: Kyle Smith threw for 171 yards to set the state passing yardage record held previously by Downingtown East Quarterback Pat Devlin (8,162 yards). Smith now has 8,174 yards passing.
