WVW’s Lewis Shines in Victory over Coughlin

Wyoming Valley West, dressed in their road white shirts with maroon pants, entered the contest in must-win mode. The Spartans’ played with a certain ferocity on defense and on offense that paved the way to their, 27-13, victory tonight over Coughlin.

Wyoming Valley West’s junior sensational quarterback Eugene Lewis threw for 158 yards and 3 scores on 6 of 12 passing. Lewis connected with Jalen McClary (60-yards) on his first touchdown strike and his next would land in the hands of Derrick Simms for 57-yards. Eugene rushed the ball 15 times as he gained 66 yards and the game’s opening 7-yard touchdown scamper. Running back George Simms ran for almost 200 yards (189) on 23 carries for an average of 8.2 stripes per tote.

The win was redemption from last year’s, 14-0, loss to the Crusaders. Now, the Spartans have defeated Coughlin, six of their last seven meetings.

The Spartan defense bottled up Coughlin all night. Charles Roman led the Crusaders in rushing with 57 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.

Wyoming Valley West (3-2) returns home next Friday to take on undefeated Dallas. While Coughlin (2-3) will regroup and head to Stroudsburg to take on the 1-4 Mounties.
