(Shillington) The Berks Section One title always seems to come down to Exeter Twp and Gov. Mifflin  This year proved no different.  Each squad had a rough go in the non-league schedule, but both teams bounced back to post win streaks in conference play.  In a tale of two halves Governor Mifflin had just enough to turn back Exeter Twp. 33-27.

Nick Singleton led the way for Governor Mifflin on both sides of the ball.  Offensively he had 16 carries for 189 yards and three TD’s  Defensively he was pressed into service at Cornerback and locked down one side of the field for the Mustangs defense.  QB Gavin McCusker  and Kicker Sean Henry who had two 30 plus yard Field Goals paced Exeter Twp.

“This victory means a lot” an emotional and out of breath Nick Singleton said after the game.  Nick said “it was something I had to do” when asked why he was pressed into to playing cornerback in the 2nd half  “Exeter is a good team” said Singleton  “There whole goal the second half was to stop me.”  Mifflin Head Coach Jeff Lang said ” I am proud of how resilient our kids were tonight.  They went at it for four quarters.  Hats off to Exeter. There are some tough, tough kids over there.  Its a shame that somebody has to lose this kind of game.”

It only took 50 seconds for Governor Mifflin to score  Nick Singleton scored on a 57 yard run to get Mifflin out in front 7-0  On the next Mustangs possession Singleton scored his 2nd TD of the night to get Mifflin out to a 14-0 lead.

The first quarter ended with Mifflin up 14-0.

Early in quarter two Exeter marched down and McCusker hit Alex Javier for the Eagles first score

Right back came Mifflin  Two plays and Nick Singleton had a 53 yard run for Mifflin to take a 21-7 lead with 8:07 until half.
No quit in Exeter  There next drive was punctuated with an Alex Javier TD, 21-14 Mifflin

Quickly Mifflin answers again  QB Kolbie Reeser hit CamRon Stewart to move Mifflin out to a 27-14 advantage.

Exeter’s next drive stalled in the Mifflin end.  No trouble foe Sean Henry to close it to 27-17 Mifflin

Mifflin moved the ball at will in the first half.  A nice TD toss from QB Reeser to Brandon Strausser as the first half ended.  Mifflin up 33-17

The only scoring of quarter three was a nice TD run by Exeter’s QB Gavin McCusker.  Mifflin still held a 33-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sean Henry for Exeter hit another field goal to really tighten things up down the stretch at 33-27 with 7;53 left. A huge fourth quarter stop by the Mifflin D with 1:44 left sealed the Mustangs win

The victory by the Mustangs means a Berks One title and a possible fist round home playoff game.  Exeter has a showdown with Daniel Boone.  A win by the Eagles means a District Payoff berth.
