ALLENTOWN – This game looked more like a basketball score. Both teams combined for 103 points, which would make Wilt Chamberlin proud. In his first start at quarterback, Kyle Lauletta threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns to lead Downingtown East over Allentown Central Catholic 62-41 in a nonleague football game Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
The partnership of Harris & Harris set the tone early Saturday night. Drew Harris scored on runs of 1 and 10 and Jay Harris hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Lauletta and before they could catch their breath Allentown Central Catholic trailed 18-0.
After a Colin McDermott three-yard touchdown run, Downingtown East answered right back with a Jay Harris 54-yard touchdown reception. East scored on its first four possessions and led 25-7.
Downingtown East head coach Mike Matta talked about Harris, “Jay Harris is a tremendous athlete and no one works harder than he does. He is the first one in the weight room and the last to leave. He is just a explosive player on the field and is fun to coach.”
ACC scored the next 20 points to take a halftime lead 27-25. South Carolina bound Quarterback Brendan Nosovitch hit Kevin Gulyas for a 91-yard touchdown pass and McDermott added runs of 4 and 3.
With all the momentum on the Vikings side they had a chance to add to their lead with under a minute remaining in the first half. But the threat ended on an interception by Downingtown East defender in the end zone.
That ended up being a key play going into the second half. Matta said, “I think that was huge. If we went down nine points at halftime it may have been a little more difficult to rally.”
In the second half it was all Downingtown East, scoring five times. Lauletta threw two touchdowns, Eddie Kozlowski’s 60-yard run and Drew Harris’ 49-yard run. Nick Dudley finished off the scoring with a 45-yard interception return.
Downingtown East’s defense held Central Catholic to two scores in the second half. Coach Matta talked about making the adjustments, “We did a lot of three men front in the first half and we did more four man front in the second half.”
Nosovitch finished the game throwing for over 300 yards and two scores. But turnovers hurt their chances throughout the game and four of the five turnovers were interceptions. Last season he only threw 11 interceptions total in 16 games.
NOTE: The big three: Drew Harris rushed for 220 yards and three scores. Emerging star wide receiver Jay Harris caught five passes for 107 yards and two scores. Lauletta threw for over 200 yards and four scores. East finished the game with over 600 total yards of offense.
Allentown Central Catholic (0-1) will try to regroup next week on the road against Bethlehem Freedom. Downingtown East (1-0) is home against Bayard Rustin.

Buddy
of course its gonna be tough for a d-11 team to be a ALL BOYS LASALLE PREP SCHOOL where you can bring in all the talent in the world ..
The Chestmont is as good as any conference in the state. The suburban is living off Cb west glory years, Neshaminy and North Penn. Not exactly a powerhouse division. One word comes to mind OVERRATED!
buddy, it doesn’t matter what league you are in etc. jeannette and aliquippa are both in district 7 (WPIAL) and there are numerous teams in that district that are A so they could be A if they want to. However, they feel they can compete on a regular basis in AA so they are AA. They are always locked in to being AA for 2 years until the new enrollment count is done. It’s not a hard concept to understand. If the high school I went to (Southern Columbia) wants to move up to AA, they can when the next enrollment is done. Then for 2 years they will have to play AA in playoffs. They can keep their same schedule they have. Once playoffs begin, they will play AA teams. After that 2 years, SCA could decide to be A again.
@ Brian:
You are correct. However, a AAAA team can play down on a single game basis. But an AAAA cannot play at AAA level in playoffs. Ex. D-town East ( AAAA) just played ACC ( AAA ) this weekend. Also, you’re correct about an AAA may obt to play up a level ( AAAA ) on a consistent basis, but I don’t think it’s allowed in playoffs. Aliquippa & Jeannette might be exceptions to the rule because there probably are no other single A schools in there league. Not sure about that though.
and when acc won 16 games last year their was nobody talking this crap.they took a loss oh well .move on .
if u play in the chestmont the team to beat is downingtown east everybody nows this .
i just want to know last year their was no talk of acc being 2a ok so stop it.know they got beat people want to say that crap.just take the L an move on .
Buddy, you can play up a class in playoffs too. If you look at aliquippa in the west, they’ve had a class A enrollment for years and have been playing in class AA. I think Jeannette does that as well.
Theres alot of talk coming from these distrcit 1 fans and saying that our schedule is weak that is just an idiotic statement sure allen and dieruff are terrible but we have every other team playing great football. we lost by our own means. that game was a tough one. anyone would be in trouble if they had to replace a senior latent line that went 16-0 those are some big shoes to fill but we will eventually jell and play central football minus those mistakes we made on friday. i wish dtowneast luck on their season and hope they stay healthy
the PIAA classifies schools according to their male enrollment from grades 8 thru 11 and reclassifies every 2 years. a team that is placed in A can opt to play up in AA and the same goes for AA and AAA. Teams are not allowed to play down and an example would be a AAAA playing in AAA.
@ billy:
Wrong. Class A cannot play AAAA. Injury factor.
If a team can play up a class ( which they can except at playoff time), the team they are playing are therefore playing DOWN a class. Correct?
@ eagle:
You actually think Chesmont can hang w/ Suburban One? We’ll all find out at playoff time, where Chesmont & Suburban One will meet.
Eagle, for classification puposes, male enrollment at ACC is 301 males which is small enough to be class AA, but as a stipulation of playing in the LVC, ACC has to be classified 3A or higher. Also, their regular season schedule consists of all 4A teams with the exception of Beth. Catholic which is 3A.
eagle, just so you know a school can have a single A enrollment and play AAAA…..teams may play up in class but can play down in class.
The state determines was class you are in according to male enrollment, so ACC does not play up to 3a they are 3a. They play a weak schedual. Chestmont is definatly the class of PA.
So , is the Wood / ACC debate over? Seems to me Wood has to be #1 in AAA now. Most of the “garbage” in District 1 would beat most of the “elite” in D-11. We should find out when Wood gets to the final against, hopefully if they make it, ACC. That game could be ugly. Unfortunately, D-11 teams will never get by LaSalle in playoffs to see how they would fair against a D-1 team in the Eastern Final.
RED Rover ….. West Chester Hen is the team to beat in the chesmont this year . WCH brings back the same team that beat Dist 1 # 1 seed last year . Coatesville shOULD also be in the mix , so i didnt expect East to look so good vs the state’s # 1 team . Lets wait until playoff comes around and you will eat your words . I dont care what happen in the past , let talk about now Baby !!!! Im just Saying 🙂
speaking of the ChesMont League…why is it still called the ChesMont when there hasn’t been a team from Montgomery county in that league in…what?……25 years?
first off congrats to east but lets not get to far ahead of yourself..did you beat the defending 3a champs yes (and probably this years champs too)…but to say this should get you a number 1 ranking in 4a is alittle iffy to me ..cchs plays up to 3a they are actually a 2a …..i also think its hilarious that you think east could make it to the state playoff game playing that garbage in district 1 …cchs will be battle test up in d-11 playing 4a competition week in and week out …i would love to see this game halfway through the year or at the end of the year !
qwerty what post are you talking about? The one im talking about says, “go away an hide.if thats not speed i dont now what is thats write elite speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, by big man.
i enjoy when people try to pretend they are smart but are too dumb to realize that it is suppose to be now not know…east is now ranked number one makes sense…east is know number one doesnt…..
WOW So now we get posts deleted? It’s not my fault I was right.
ACC beaten by a better prepared team. Harris’
s can run, can catch and run. ACC proved they can score at anytime. Need offensive and defensive line improvement. Can’t force that pass….see what happens. Why didn’t Nosovitch run more? Lets see what week 2 brings.
i may be nitpicking here but it’s know, not now and it’s right not write. i enjoy reading posts but when someone is defending themselves or talking smack and they look unintelligent it takes away from them.
such a good start to the season! pretty sure east is now ranked number one in the state
East should be the new number #1 . I would love to have heard East coach half-time speech . A Chesmont team will go to Hershey this year .YOU
CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK …..Im just say 🙂
i told u so . drew harris is the truth an so is downingtown east.haters go away an hide.if thats not speed i dont now what is thats write elite speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hats of to acc the play a good game .
