Following Liberty’s 28-21 state title victory against Bethel Park, Liberty head coach Tim Moncman answered a question about his star left-handed quarterback, junior Anthony Gonzalez, with another question.

“How the heck can he not have a scholarship offer yet?” Liberty’s 82-game winner asked.

Ask, and you shall receive.

According to an e-mail from Liberty assistant coach Jim Tkach, Gonzalez already has an official offer in writing from Pitt.  Northwestern, Illinois, and Missouri, Tkach said, are also showing interest.

Rivals.com reports other Division-1 colleges interested in the 6’3, 190-pound dual threat quarterback include Alabama, Boston College, Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Rivals also reported that Gonzalez has an official offer from Penn State.  But as of Monday, Tkach said, Penn State had not offered Gonzalez a scholarship.

Gonzalez, a 1st-team All-state selection, was named the Associated Press “AAAA” Player of the Year for the 2008 season.  His season stats were very impressive.  Gonzalez ran for 1,697 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 1,585 passing yards and 12 additional scores.

In the state championship game, Gonzalez ran for 205 yards and threw for another 97.  He ran for three Hurricane touchdowns and threw for the other.  He also intercepted Bethel Park quarterback Erik Olson in overtime to seal the Liberty victory.

Liberty, which has won 62 of its last 71 games, finished 2008 ranked #21 in the nation according to the USA-Today, tying the highest national ranking in school history.  Liberty was ranked #21 in the nation by the same publication entering its 2007 battle with Bethlehem Catholic.

Gonzalez is the proud owner of a 25-3 record (.892) as a varsity quarterback.

NOTES:  Liberty already has a connection when it comes to Northwestern recruiting its players.  Former Hurricane field general Dan Persa currently attends the Evanston, Illinois school.  Persa threw for over 5,000 yards and led Liberty to the 2005 and 2006 “AAAA” state championship games.
