McDevitt shuts out WPIAL power
HARRISBURG –Bishop McDevitt’s defense shined as they held Gateway’s offense to 96 total yards as the Crusaders cruised to the 23-0 win at McDevitt Field. McDevitt’s opening possession went 15-plays, capped by a 32-yard field goal by Connor Maloney. After a couple of drives that stalled, quarterback Matt Johnson would get the first touchdown of […]
Good luck to all teams!!
The high school football season starts today!! I love football. For it is truly the sport closest to combat. Men strategize in their war room, don their armor, and line up against their opponent. Victory is measured in territory gained, in how well one unit outmaneuvers the other. The game involves brute strength and keen […]
Team #1 West Catholic (12) 0-0
The Burrs are loaded. The term “loaded” is not one to just be casually tossed around, but West Catholic certainly fits the bill. For starters, the Burrs’ quarterback situation was solved when Anthony Reid (former North Catholic field general) came to West after NC was shuttered. Reid threw for 1,098 yards and 9 TD. West’s […]
Team #1 Cumberland Valley (3) 0-0
The Eagles might have the best team in the landscape of District 3 AAAA football teams this year. The defending D3 champions have won 12 games each of the last two seasons, and head coach Tim Rimpfel (276-91-3 overall, 11 District 3 football title victories, 1 PIAA title) has quite a number of pieces back. […]

Team #2 Dunmore (2) 0-0
The Bucks, who went 12-1 last season and claimed yet another District 2 football championship (its 5th district crown in school history) lose career 6,600-yard rusher Michael Perry and QB Dave Olivetti (1,008 yards of offense, 11 total TD), but Dunmore is loaded up front. Senior OL/DLs Jerry Hubshman, Jim Sabia and Paul Gaughan are […]
Team #2 North Penn (1) 0-0
Before the Ridley Green Raiders felled North Penn in the District 1 AAAA title game, the Knights were ranked 11th in the nation by the USA-Today. The Knights finished 13-1 overall, but have to find a replacement for reliable senior field general Todd Smolinsky (1,600+ passing yards). RBs Craig Needhammer and Brandon Mercer return, as […]
Team #3 Southern Columbia (4) 0-0
After a “down” year of 9-5 and yet another District 4 Class A championship, here are the Tigers, poised to jump back up on top in the state’s smallest classification. The 5-loss season for Southern was the first since the late 1980s. Southern returns a plethora of athletes from its 2009 team which was eliminated […]
Team #3 Bishop McDevitt (3) 0-0
The Crusaders are very highly regarded in the AAA classification this year, and many feel Bishop McDevitt is the top team in the state in this classification. With Bowling Green commit Matt Johnson (4,984 career passing yards, 59 TD) and Pitt commit Jameel Poteat (3,114 career rush yards, 45 TD), it would be easy to […]
Team #4 Lancaster Catholic (3) 0-0
The Crusaders are coming off of their best season in school history – 15-1 overall record, PIAA AA champions, a school-record 618 points scored. Even though graduation reared its ugly head and claimed QB Kyle Smith (Central Michigan), WRs Quinn Houser, Tyler Purvis and Kevin Cotchen and TE Andrew Millay, the Crusaders are not running […]
Team #4 LaSalle (12) 0-0
The Explorers tied the school record for victories last season en route to claiming the Philadelphia Catholic League’s first PIAA football championship , but the blue and gold took a huge hit with graduation. Only two returning offensive and defensive linemen (Ryan Geiger and Cameron Cappo) return, and Villanova commit Jamal Abdur-Rahman (1,198 rush yards) […]

Team #5 North Schuylkill (11) 0-0
The defending District 11 AA champion Spartans had quite the season in 2009 – running off 13 consecutive wins and winning their first district crown since 1996. NS returns seven starters on both offense and defense from last year’s team, including senior RBs Scott Houser (175 rush, 950 yards, 12 TD), Ed Pavalko (152, 837, […]
Team #5 Archbishop Wood (12) 0-0
It would not be unreasonable to consider Wood as one of the top three teams in the AAA classification this season. The Vikings have quite a number of pieces and a very sizeable and physical offensive line to make yet another deep playoff run and possibly a 3rd consecutive berth in the Eastern Finals. Wood […]
Team #6 Loyalsock Township (4) 0-0
In the last three seasons, the Lancers have posted an overall record of 30-11 and have claimed some type of hardware each year. Loyalsock Township won District 4 AA titles in 2007 and 2009 and claimed the 2008 Eastern Conference AA title. Yet it seems like the maroon and white are somewhat still flying under […]
Team #6 Ridley (1) 0-0
A traditional football powerhouse from Delaware County, Ridley brings to the table an all-time winning percentage of .787 (according to the Pennsylvania Football News) and has made two appearances in the PIAA AAAA Eastern Finals in the last three years. Second year head coach Dennis Decker (13-2) brings back some nice pieces in terms of […]
Team #7 Northern Lehigh (11) 0-0
The Bulldogs finished 10-3 a season ago, falling in the District 11 AA championship game to North Schuylkill. The purple and white have some nice components from that district runner-up team from a year ago, including a key off-season acquisition in assistant coach Jim Tkach, who is back wearing the Bulldog team colors after leading […]
Team #7 Downingtown East (1) 0-0
The Cougars could be one of the most explosive offensive units in District 1 this season, as three main offensive weapons return to Exton. QB Trey Lauletta (1,917 yards passing, 18 TD) averaged more than 150 passing yards per game last season, and Rutgers-bound TE Tyler Kroft (36 rec., 667 yards, 8 TD) was one […]

Team #8 Steelton-Highspire (3) 0-0
The Rollers lived up to their nickname (in full, it is “Steamrollers”) in 2007 and 2008 with RB Jeremiah Young and an offensive line that simply flattened people en route to consecutive PIAA championships. Now, the Rollers are going back to their roots – simply shooting past people with a high octane spread offense. In […]
Team #8 Allentown Central Catholic (11) 0-0
The Vikings reached the PIAA AAA playoffs last year, hanging with powerful Selinsgrove for a half before falling, 31-10. But the Vikings are primed for yet another deep playoff run, even with the loss of defensive stalwart Connor Faust for the entire season. Junior QB Brandon Nosovitch (2,078 passing yards, 1,163 rush yards, 41 total […]
Team #9 Lewisburg (4) 0-0
Loyalsock Township blitzed the Green Dragons in the District 4 AA title game, but Lewisburg has a very nice nucleus returning from its 11-win football team a season ago. Lewisburg has a solid offensive nucleus returning from its 2009 unit that averaged 27.5 points and 218 rushing yards per game. Junior QB Camden Cassels (49-of-85, […]
Team #9 Pottsgrove (1) 0-0
The Falcons have generated quite the amount of attention this offseason with four-star prospect Terrell Chestnut, who has verbally committed to Pittsburgh. Chestnut ran for 995 yards, threw for more than 500 yards, and accounted for 23 total touchdowns. He’s joined by fellow potential D-1 prospects Maika Polamalu (1,450 rush yards, 20 TD; 53 tackles, […]
Team #10 Wyomissing (3) 0-0
The Spartans could be a sleeper team in the District 3 AA championship hunt this year, as 13 starters return from a 7-4 football team that finished 5-1 in Section 2 of the Berks Inter-County League to Reading Holy Name. The Reading Eagle’s Mike Drago reported Wyomissing has won seven of the last nine IC-2 […]
Team #10 Wilson (3) 0-0
45-9 under the Doug Dahms admininstration, Wilson-West Lawn’s worst season was a 9-4 mark in the 2007 season. Bishop McDevitt (3)
1) Bishop McDevitt (3) 0-0 – The Crusaders have all the ingredients necessary for greatness this season. Not only are nine offensive and eight defensive starters back in the lineup, there are no fewer than 10 players on the roster who have received Division I scholarship offers. The makings for a very potent offensive attack […]
West Catholic (12)
2) West Catholic (12) 0-0 – Six inches separated the Burrs from their goal of a PIAA championship last season. This year, the offensive are not Drake, Maples, or Hollomon, but names like C Jake Zuzek, TE Jim Lynch, and WR Quaran Kent. The talk is that the Burrs return some serious speed to their […]
Bethlehem Liberty (11)
2) Bethlehem Liberty (11) 0-0 – The defending PIAA “AAAA” state champions return some big names, namely star quarterback Anthony Gonzalez, who has an outside chance to become the second 4,000/4,000 quarterback in the last three years. With six starters back on both sides of the ball the Hurricanes should offer a strong defense of […]
Montoursville (4)
3) Montoursville (4) 0-0 – The load will fall on running back Cody Haupt and quarterback Travis Singer this season as the Warriors appear to field yet another competitive team. If the Warriors have a passing attack to balance their always-tougher-than-nails ground game, things could work out pretty well along the West Branch of the […]
Selinsgrove (4)
3) Selinsgrove (4) 0-0 – This Selinsgrove team is probably better than the 2006 team that went 13-1 and set a school record for wins in a season. What’s better is that this ’09 edition of the Seals is back in its rightful PIAA bracket – the eastern half – and has the talent to […]
Schuylkill Haven (11)
4) Schuylkill Haven (11) 0-0 – The Zach Barket show has gone, and now the focus becomes who can replace the over-8,000 yard rusher who led the nation in rushing yardage last season? The 14-1, 670-point season certainly was magical, but now QB Brian Murphy and Co. will have to keep things rolling along. Prior […]
Neshaminy (1)
4) Neshaminy (1) 0-0 – This traditional District 1 powerhouse was faced with two very tough teams to close out its season – “AAAA” convert Garnet Valley and powerhouse North Penn. The Redskins lost the District 1 championship game to the Knights, 28-0. Neshaminy returns a 1,000-yard rusher in Bryan Dean on offense and on […]

Dunmore (2)
5) Dunmore (2) 0-0 – The Bucks are 35-6 the last three years and have won consecutive District 2 “AA” championships, but from the looks of things, they’ll have to rely more on 4,800-yard rusher Michael Perry than ever until the new quarterback replacing 5,300-yard, 72-touchdown passer Miller Holmes gets comfortable in the offense. Perry […]
Manheim Central (3)
5) Manheim Central (3) 0-0 – If the Barons were aligned in the eastern half of the “AAA” playoff bracket, they’d probably draw an epic battle with Selinsgrove along the way. Instead, the maroon and grey field a team some in the west would be envious of. Central’s top two rushers return, as do its […]

Steelton-Highspire (3)
6) Steelton-Highspire (3) 0-0 – The two-time defending Class “A” state champs have to be ranked somewhere on this list – they enter the year with a 25-game winning streak and the onus of replacing many, many key players, like Andre Campbell, Jordan Hill, and Jeremiah Young. Head coach Rob Deibler is one win shy […]
LaSalle (12)
6) LaSalle (12) 0-0 – The Explorers might be doing some exploring late into November, and possibly December, if things go their way and they don’t fall victim to George Washington in the District 12 title game. Drew Loughery is a 2,900-yard passer for his career, and Sam Feleccia, Jamal Abdur-Rahman, and company are looking […]
Middletown (3)
7) Middletown (3) 0-0 – After some thin years in the won-loss column, Middletown came back last season with a vengeance, winning 10 games before falling to powerful Lancaster Catholic in the District 3 “AA” championship game. Running back Rodney Ramsey, who totaled over 1,200 yards last season, will be one of the keys to […]
North Penn (1)
7) North Penn (1) 0-0 – Experienced these Knights are not, but somehow, some way, this Lansdale-based power always finds a way to reload. North Penn has gone 89-18 since the start of the 2001 season, and played in Eastern Finals in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2008. Which of the youthful Knights that return to […]
Southern Columbia (4)
8) Southern Columbia (4) 0-0 – Jim Roth is three wins shy of 300. Break out the cake and ice cream. Oh wait – that gets saved for the return trip home from Hershey with a golden football, and it’s been two years since the Tigers hoisted a state title trophy. The Tigers will be […]
Downingtown West (1)
8) Downingtown West (1) 0-0 – There’s some talk that Downingtown West might be average at best. Sure, the Whippets lose a great multi-purpose running back/wide receiver, among others, but Bret Gillespie, a 2,000-yard passer, returns to lead the offense. On defense look for DE Josh Coulter to lead the way. Then again, Downingtown West […]
Williams Valley (11)
9) Williams Valley (11) 0-0 – The Vikings were picked to have a pretty successful season last year, and they did, if you base it on wins and losses. But they didn’t get to hoist that long-awaited District 11 championship trophy. Can the Vikings get over that hump, and not only overcome Schuylkill Haven, but […]
Pennsbury (1)
9) Pennsbury (1) 0-0 – If the “every four years” philosophy is correct, then 2009 will be Pennsbury’s year. In 2006, recall, Pennsbury gave Bethlehem Liberty everything it could handle, and then some in the Eastern Final, before losing in quadruple overtime, 45-38. Athlete Eric Williams is a Division-1 prospect.

Jeremiah Young’s quest for the state’s career rushing record deflected much of the attention. The Rollers won their second consecutive PIAA championship, and […]

Thriller in Bangor: Wilson in a shoot out over Bangor
BANGOR – You had the two top teams in the Colonial League facing off Friday night. On this night it was like Ali vs. Frazier, two great teams throwing everything they had at each other. Coming into the game of Abington Heights at Wallenpaupack, it was obvious who was the most notable name on the field. St. Joe’s Prep rallies past Parkland
OREFIELD – St. Joe’s Head coach Gil Brooks never shies away from good competition. Last night the Hawks took on D-11 powerhouse Parkland, last year’s PIAA Class AAAA state playoff runner-up. The Parkland Trojans were carrying a 23-game regular season winning steak. But on this night the Hawks came from a 10-0 deficit in […]
Steelton-Highspire
An obvious choice at #1 for so many reasons. Maybe it’s because of Jordan Hill, a wrecking fullback/linebacker who has committed to Rutgers. Maybe it’s because of the Rollers dual-threat quarterback Andre Campbell. Maybe it’s because the Rollers are the defending state champions in Class “A.” Or maybe, just maybe, it could be because of […]
St. Joseph’s Prep
And so it continue for the Hawks, who find themselves atop the big school rankings once again. Who cares if Prep is starting a quarterback who hasn’t even attempted a pass, or a running back in Mike Yeager who only ran for 191 yards and 5 touchdowns a season ago? Gil Brooks has put this […]

Dunmore
Miller Holmes, a 1,600-yard, 25-touchdown passing quarterback, is good. Two mammoth offensive linemen are also good. Add in junior tailback Michael Perry, a career 2,900-yard rusher, and it puts Dunmore in everyone’s discussion of who is the District 2 “AA” favorite. Can the Bucks make a repeat trip to Hershey and avenge the 49-21 defeat […]
Bethlehem Liberty
The toughest year is over for Anthony Gonzalez, who enters his second year as the starting quarterback for the Hurricanes. The lefty threw for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago, and guided Liberty to the 2/4/11 “AAAA” semifinals, where the Canes fell in a heartbreaker to an out-of-this-world Hazleton Cougar team. Boasting […]
West Catholic
These PIAA-newcomers could just wind up crashing the party, because they’ve got a team that, on paper, looks pretty much unstoppable. Curtis Drake (PSU), and Rob Holloman and Raymond Maples are all D-1 prospects, and fullback Juan Rozier is a human wrecking-ball of a blocker. And oh by the way, the Burrs have a sturdy […]
North Penn
Simply put, North Penn is a traditional District 1 powerhouse, and is always in the running for playoff berths and District championships. But you knew all that. What you may not know is that the three-time Eastern finalist Knights have gone 75-17 since the start of 2001, good enough for a winning percentage of .815, […]
Riverside
Don’t look now, but Riverside is ready to rock and roll some District 2 “A” competition. Moving down from “AA,” where the Vikings lambasted Dunmore during the regular season, to “A” with the likes of Lackawanna Trail and Old Forge only spells trouble for the competition. And, keep in mind that in 13 games, this Riverside […]
Neshaminy
The Redskins lose Jason Ulmer and a couple pretty solid linebackers. Any worries in Langhorne? Nope. At the East-West All-Star Game in Altoona, head coach Mark Schmidt said that there are some pretty good athletes returning to the Redskins’ fold this season. Guess it wasn’t coach-speak if the three-time Eastern finalist Skins are ranked #4 […]
Trinity
12-0 and feeling on top of the world, the Shamrocks were stunned by Delone Catholic 25-0 in the District championship game last year. Whether or not the Shamrocks can put together two straight 10-win seasons remains to be seen, but the green and white does return Christian Kuntz (10 career INTs) to the defensive backfield, […]
Parkland
The defending “AAAA” PIAA runners-up have a solid cast of characters returning to Allentown. Nine defensive starters return in 2008 from a unit which pitched a scoreless streak of 28 consecutive quarters. Only one other PIAA affiliate had a 20-quarter scoreless streak last season. Jaleel Clark is a stud wide receiver and free safety for […]
Mount Carmel
Is this the year Mount Carmel finally gets back to Hershey? It is an even-numbered year, after all. And the Red Tornadoes boast 27 seniors, including 3,900-yard career passer Marcus Wasilewski. There appears to be a certain swagger back in Mount Carmel, you know, the swagger which helped them reach six PIAA finals in nine […]
Garnet Valley
Minus quarterback Eric Van Wyk, the Jaguars return their entire starting backfield from a team which finished 13-2 and as PIAA runners-up to Thomas Jefferson. Tim Keyser, Jared Bonaquisti, and Chris Palaio combined for well over 2,500 rushing yards last season. Wingback Keyser was also GV’s leading receiver with nearly 800 yards on over 40 […]
Lancaster Catholic
Bruce Harbach has a heck of a football team returning this football season, beginning with one of the most accurate passers returning to the Lancaster-Lebanon League in Kyle Smith. The left-handed hurler completed nearly 67 percent of his passes for just under 2,600 yards to go along with 26 touchdowns a season ago. Offensive lineman […]
Bishop McDevitt
McDevitt has always had the athletes and the talent. They lose all-purpose running back Mike Jones and his 23 touchdowns scored, but the Crusaders return Kyle Koncar, who has thrown for nearly 3,000 career yards during his time as the field general. Will 2008 see the Crusaders bring home another District 3 championship to Market […]
Marian Catholic
The Colts are always tough, and the defending District 11 “A” champs return yet another solid football team. Led by 257-game winner Stan Dakosty, the seven-time District 11 champions are poised for another run. Sure, Pius X, Minersville and Schuylkill Haven might stand in the way, and both return solid football teams in their own […]
Wyoming Valley West
Any time you meet up with a George Curry-coached football team, you know you’re going to be in for a battle. The all-time winningest coach in Pennsylvania history loses workhorse Matt Kolojechick and his over 2,000 rushing yards, but there always seems to be another capable running back in the fold. Will Curry be able […]
Schuylkill Haven
Zach Barket absolutely lit the world on fire for the Hurricanes last season, totaling 2,518 yards and scoring over 30 touchdowns. The career 4,310-yard rusher looks to spearhead the Haven offense for the third straight season, and nearly the entire team returns from last year’s 7-5 record and berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Will […]
Harrisburg
The Cougars seemingly lost everybody from its inaugural District 3 championship team last season, which is hard to believe considering the talent Harrisburg usually fields. But George Chaump is a pretty good one when it comes to reloading, and there’s talk about Harrisburg’s defense being the forte of this edition of the silver and black. […]

Jenson leads Red Team
NAZARETH – Palisades quarterback Kyle Jensen may have saved his best game for last, as he led the Red Team throwing four touchdown passes to a 27-21 win in the 38th Annual McDonald’s Lehigh Valley Classic at Nazareth’s Andy Leh Stadium. Jensen got the scoring going in the first quarter. Jensen hit Wade Williams of […]
South stars win 46-43
This game was ruled by the offense. In it we saw 89 points scored, 13 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards of total offense. The South team won a thrilling 46 to 43 game over the North stars in the Seventh Annual Tri-County All-Star football game at Rettew Stadium. In the final minutes of the game both teams scored what seemed like the game winning touchdown. But with 39.7 seconds to go in the game, Jerome LaRue of JP McCaskey dove into the end zone for a four-yard, game winning score.

HERSHEY – The Pennsylvania all-stars provided plenty of fireworks and hard hits in last night’s 51st annual Big 33 Football Classic at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey.
