  • Special teams help send Archbishop Wood back to Hershey

    tylerweek152013By Dean Beers, D11Football.com

ALLENTOWN – The game was originally scheduled for Friday night in Allentown but due to inclement weather, game officials rescheduled the game for Saturday night, at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown.

Archbishop Wood senior running back Luke Spahits didn’t seem to mind the postponement. He scored two special teams touchdowns, both of 75 yards, to help his team to a 42-14 win over Berwick. The win sends the District 12 champion to Hershey next Friday night to face Bishop McDevitt for the chance to win PIAA Gold.

Spahits scored the first of his two kickoff returns for touchdowns late in the first quarter. The touchdown answered Berwick’s touchdown, a CJ Curry 32 yard touchdown pass to Trent Force. Spahits’ kickoff return for a touchdown put the Vikings ahead of Berwick for good, at 14-7.

After the Bulldogs struggled to move the ball on their next possession, Berwick punted the ball. Jarrett McClenton was on the receiving end of the punt, and returned the punt to the Berwick 1 yard line before being tackled. McClenton scored two plays later, for a Vikings 21-7 lead, midway thru the second quarter.

After another Berwick punt, McClenton did much of the legwork. This time, it was a run of 24 and he scored on a long run of 57 yards down the right sideline put the Vikings ahead 28-7.

The two teams traded punts to end the first half at Archbishop Wood 28, Berwick 7.

The Bulldogs received the kickoff to begin the second half. Behind the legs of Bulldogs running back Dain Kowalski and the throwing arm of CJ Curry, Berwick drove 73 yards for a touchdown. Curry tossed an 11-yard pass to Andrew Force to close the gap at 28-14.

Archbishop Wood had an answer. Luke Spahits was that answer with his second 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Vikings regained their 21-point advantage, 35-14.

The Vikings and the Bulldogs traded possessions throughout the third quarter and halfway through the fourth quarter.

Archbishop Wood put the nail in the coffin of the Berwick fans’ dreams on a long drive lasting nearly 5 and 1/2 minutes.

Backup senior running back Tyrone Dean did much of the legwork a run of 26 and his only touchdown of the night, scoring from one yard out, with 6:25 left in the game. The District 12 champions are on their way to Hershey.

  • Roughies rout Konkrete Kids

CATASAUQUA – Roughies junior quarterback Zach Bradley was 7 for 10 passing and three touchdowns leading his team to a 52-21 rout of Northampton on Thanksgiving Day at Alumni Field in Catasauqua.

Catasauqua ends their season at 12-1, tieing the school record for wins.  The Rough Riders haven’t scored this much in the series since they beat Northampton 35-0 in 1992. The last time 52 points were scored by one team in the series was in 1937 when Northampton won 85-0.

Northampton (2-9) leads the series 54-31-4 but Catasauqua has won the past two games in the series (20-6 last year).

Northampton led in the game 6-3 in the second quarter when the Rough Riders reeled off 20 straight points for a 23-6 lead, until a Nick Cook 40 yard touchdown pass to Jared Bauer cut the lead to 23-13 at halftime.

The Roughies scored on their first possession of the second half on a Zach Bradley to Alex Parker 18 yard pass, for a 30-13 lead.

After an 8:08 drive by Northampton in the third quarter that ended with a turnover on downs, it took Catasauqua four plays to score their next touchdown. Eric Matz scampered 34 yards to paydirt, 37-13 Roughies.

The Konkrete Kids had another time consuming drive (that took up 5:56) in the fourth quarter. This time, Paryss Marshall intercepted a Nick Cook pass over the middle, and returned it 80 yards to the house. An Alex Parker two point conversation extended the lead to 45-13. The game was placed into the mercy rule after the Roughies squib-kicked the opening kickoff. A K-Kid up-man touched the ball, but a Roughie recovered it. A little more than a minute later, it was 52-13.

Northampton added a late touchdown, but Catasauqua takes the 90th Annual Thanksgiving Day game 52-21.

  • Artis too much for Golden Hawks

    by Dean Beers of D11Football.com

Bethlehem, PA – It was homecoming for Bethlehem Catholic on an overcast Saturday afternoon, but Khaleel Artis put on his own show. Artis scored 4 touchdowns including a 62 yard touchdown to help Emmaus to a 49-14 win over the Golden Hawks.

Artis scored 3 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, compiling 145 yards in the first half. He rushed for a total of 241 yards.

Early in the 2nd, Artis scored on a 1-yard run, rushing 8 times out of the 11 offensive plays the Hornets had, to tie the game at 7. Golden Hawks’ Connor Casey scored on a 27 yard touchdown run with 2:33 left in the first quarter, as Bethlehem Catholic (3-2) took the first lead of the game.

But after Artis’ 1-yard touchdown run, the Golden Hawks fumble the ensuing kickoff recovered by Emmaus (3-2). The next play Artis dashes for a 12 yard run as the Green Hornets take their first lead of the game, 14-7.

About two minutes later, on a 3 play, 77 yard drive, Golden Hawks’ Casey scampers for a 74 yard touchdown to the the game up at 14 a piece. Casey would end the day with 109 yards rushing. He also threw for 132 yards, completing 10 of 15 passes.

As the two teams traded punches, Emmaus’ Andrew Kerson (11/17, 215 passing) threw a 68 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Brown, giving Emmaus the lead again, 21-14. The Green Hornets would seize the lead for good with five minutes left in the 2nd quarter, as Artis adds his third touchdown of the game on a 62-yard run. Green Hornets lead 28-14.

Emmaus tried extending their lead on a 32 yard field as time expired, but the kick was no good.

After a good kickoff return for the Hornets to the Hawks 23, it took the Emmaus offense 2 plays to give themselves a 21 point lead. It would be another connection from Kerson to Brown (161 yards rec.), this time a 21 yard  pass and catch, to extend the Emmaus lead, 35-14.

After an exchange of punts, very late in the 3rd quarter, Artis would close out his own scoring with a 6 yard scamper, for a 42-14 lead.

The Green Hornets would put the mercy rule into affect, with 3:40 left in the game on a Darren Smith 5 yard run. Smith would rush for 32 of his 40 yards, on the final drive of the game, making the final score 49-14.

  • Late Touchdown earns Central Catholic a Title

    By Dean Beers, D11Football.com

Hershey –  Brendan Nosovitch and his team have had big plays all throughout the playoffs. The Vikings needed a big one being behind 27-21 with less than 3 minutes to go in the game.

They got one. A 70-yard pass from Nosovitch to senior tight end Jack Sandherr (5 catches, 128 yards) took the Vikings (16-0) from their own 12-yard line to the Bishop McDevitt 18 –yard line.

One play later, Viking junior quarterback Nosovitch went up the middle 18 yards for the go ahead score, for a lead they would never relinquish. The Vikings would earn their 3rd PIAA State Title with a 28-27 win over the Crusaders of Bishop McDevitt. The Vikings also won PIAA State Titles in 1993 and 1998.

The Crusaders took the first lead of the game on their first possession. They drove 65 yards on 7 plays, capping the drive off when McDevitt senior quarterback Matt Johnson threw a 28 -yard touchdown pass to Brian Lamelle (4 catches, 82 yards). An extra point  gave the team a 7-0 lead.

Central Catholic would answer right back.  Nosovitch completed passes of 8, 16 and 31 yards on the drive, but ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven all.

After both teams exchanged punts, the Crusaders had half the field to work with.

Crusader (13-3) senior running back Jameel Poteat (19 rushes, 71 yards) scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 22-yard touchdown run. An extra point gave the Crusaders a 14-7 lead.

It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter when the Vikings’ scored again. The Vikings’ defense had pinned the Crusaders back at their own eight-yard line, when they forced a McDevitt punt which only went 17 yards.

On second down and 11, Nosovitch fumbled the ball but Nathan Roberts recovered the ball for the Viking on the 25 yard line. On the next play, Nosovitch scored on a 25-yard touchdown run. The game was tied at 14 going into halftime.

Central Catholic’s first possession of the second half gave them the lead. The Vikings drove 73 yards on 6 plays, with the big play coming on a Nosovitch to Kevin McKellick (3 catches, 45 yards) 29 – yard pass to the Crusaders 35 yard line. Four plays later, Nosovitch threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas (7 catches, 61 yards). The Vikings lead 21-14.

After a series of exchanged punts, Crusader Miles Williams intercepted a Nosovitch pass and returned it to midfield. It took McDevitt six plays to score on a Matt Johnson 9nine–yard run. The game was tied at 21.

After a Central Catholic turnover on downs, McDevitt drove 57 yards to retake the lead. Poteat did most of the work on this drive, rushing for 25 yards including a three-yard touchdown run. The kick failed, and the Crusaders led 27-21 with seven minutes to go in the game.

Nosovitch finished the game passing 16 for 27 and a touchdown, with 236 yards. He also rushed for 47 yards and 3 touchdowns. We believe he is also the first quarterback to throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a season.

Johnson, a Bowling Green recruit, completed 18 passes in 34 attempts, with 235 yards. He also rushed for 5 yards and a touchdown.

  • K-Kids win 22-17 in Turkey Day rivalry

CATASAUQUA – It was the first day of the holiday season, Thanksgiving. A day when two of the Lehigh Valley rivals go at it, before they eat their turkey with all the trimmings. The weather was also added to the holiday spirit, with snow falling most of the game.

Northampton and Catasauqua met for the 88th time at Alumni Field in Catasauqua. The Konkrete Kids have won seven straight games over their rival, the RoughRiders. Catasauqua’s last win was in 2002, winning 21-6, also at Alumni Field. The Roughies were hoping to start a new streak and end Northampton’s at the same time.

Konkrete Kid’s running back John Lambert had something to say about continuing his team’s streak. The senior had three touchdowns and a key fumble recovery, with about a minute left in the game to seal Northampton’s 22-17 win, and extend the K-Kids streak to eight games over the Rough Riders.

Lambert scored touchdowns in the first two possessions for his team. He did most of the grunt work on the first drive of the game, going 63 yards for a touchdown. After a Catasauqua punt, Northampton got the ball back again, this time driving 63 yards for the score on a Lambert one yard touchdown run.

Lambert, who rushed for 92 yards, was also his team’s MVP.

But, on the ensuing kickoff, Catasauqua’s Sa’Quon Burton went 85 yards for the Roughie touchdown, to bring his team to 15-7 with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

Catasauqua had another chance to score in the first quarter, with 1:25 left, but Nathan Falko fumbled the ball away at his team’s 5 yard line.

With 8:38 left in the 3rd quarter, Burton threw a 23 yard touchdown pass to senior Kyle Nyce, on the halfback option play to tie the score at 15 all. Burton finished with 40 yards rushing on the day. Nyce finished with 57 yard receiving and a touchdown.

With the team’s trading possessions, Lambert scored his third and last touchdown of the day, with 9:59 left in the game. The senior ran 11 yards for the score to extend Northampton’s lead to 22-15.

The game’s scoring ended as a bunch of Rough Rider defenders tackled Lambert in the endzone for a safety.

Catasauqua had one last chance with 1:21 left in the game, but Lambert recovered a Deontae Hill fumble at the Konkrete Kids’ 38 yard line.

Sa’Quon Burton was his team’s MVP. He threw a touchdown pass, ran a kickoff back for a touchdown and rushed for 40 yards.

Northampton finished the season 5-6 and now leads the series 54-30-4. Since 1975, the Konkrete Kids now lead the series 18-17-1. Catasauqua ends its season at 6-6.

  • South runs by North in SCFCA All-Star Game

It was more like track meet than an all-star football game Saturday night in Schuylkill Haven. The South All-Stars set the tempo most of the night with a 9 play, 75-yard scoring drive to open the scoring at 7-0.

The South wouldn’t look back from there, as the South All-Stars defeated the North All-Stars, 44-15, in the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association All-Star Football Classic at Schuylkill Haven’s Rotary Field.

South Head coach Mike Farr (Schuylkill Haven) employed the Wing-T offense using his own running back Evan Fink (120 yards, 18 carries) along with Blue Mountain’s Frank Gaffney (6 carries, 59 yards) to lead the team. Gaffney earned the Most Outstanding Player award with 2 touchdowns and nearly scoring another one on an interception return.

Gaffney scored his 2nd touchdown of the game on a 2 yard TD run, then Williams Valley’s Brent Wolfe continued the South scoring with a 50 yard fumble recovery for a TD, with 3:30 left in the first half. South lead 28-0.

The North’s Most Outstanding Player, Zach Hogan (North Schuylkill), got the North on the board with a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, that trimmed the South lead to 28-7.

After Pine Grove’s Zach Blouch 24-yard field goal, Blouch’s former teammate Carl Hoover recovered a fumble in the endzone for a 38-7 lead. Schuylkill Haven’s Jon Nettles help set up the touchdown punting the ball to the North 3 yard line.

North’s other touchdown came via an 80-yard touchdown reception by Marian Catholic’s Joe Kloap from North Schuylkill’s Tom Ferrari. A two point conversion made the score 38-15 but thats closest the North would get.

Tri-Valley’s quarterback Matt McGinley closed the scoring on the game with a 1 yard TD run. McGinley went 5-7, for 47 yards.

The South finished the game with 291 yards rushing on 45 carries.

  • K-Kids extend winning streak to seven against rival Catasauqua 28-7

NORTHAMPTON – It’s the holiday season, and it’s become the season for giving. It’s also Thanksgiving which usually means gatherings with family and friends. But, for several teams in the Lehigh Valley, it means a little more – a Thanksgiving Day football game before they sit down and have turkey and filling with all the trimmings.

Catasauqua and Northampton met for the 87th time (83rd meeting on Thanksgiving Day) today at Al Erdosy Stadium in Northampton. Northampton had won the past six meetings between the two rivals. The Rough Riders haven’t won since 2002, a 21-6 winner, when Ed Csencsits was the head coach.

Catasauqua was coming off a hard fought loss to Northern Lehigh this past Saturday in the District 11 Class 2A Semifinals. Northampton hadn’t played since the last week of the regular season, which was a loss to Nazareth.

Northampton won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd half. Catasauqua elected to receive the opening kickoff. Each team traded a possession in the first quarter until Catasauqua’s Brandon Lesko threw a pass, intercepted by Northampton’s Anthony DiClemente with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The quarter ended with both teams tied at 0-0.

The Konkrete Kids continued the drive, which began on their own six-yard line. It ended on a four-yard touchdown run by Brock Baker. The K-Kids went up 6-0 (missed extra point).

On the Roughies’ second possession of the second quarter, Brandon Lesko hit John Lynn on a 25 -yard touchdown pass with 1:01 remaining in the half. Lesko ended the day – 8/17 with 70 yards passing and 3 INTs. Catasauqua ended the half by intercepting Northampton’s Zach Szoke on their own five-yard line. Catty ended the game with four turnovers.

The Rough Riders took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Both teams came out fired up from halftime, but it was Northampton who took charge. On the Roughies first possession of the second half, Nathan Falko fumbled the ball on the K-Kids 27 yard line. It was recovered by Northampton’s Dan Riley. The K-Kids turned the turnover into points with Josh Fehnel’s 14 -yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the third quarter. A two-point conversion of Szoke to John Lambert made the score 14-7 Northampton.

After a Catty four and out at the end of the third quarter, Northampton drove for another touchdown with a Szoke five yard touchdown run with 10:24 in the game.

With the game in hand, with 1:45 left, Tyler Marx took the ball into the end zone on a one yard TD run. Northampton won 28-7, and has won the last seven games in this rivalry.

Northampton ended the season, 4-7. Catasauqua 8-5.

Josh Fehnel was Northampton’s game MVP, who toted the ball for 154 yards. Brandon Lesko was Catasauqua’s MVP.
