  • Leiby leads D4 South past North, 63-20

Five first half touchdowns by Selinsgrove’s Logan Leiby paved the way for the District IV South All-Star team in a 63-20 rout of the District IV North All-Star team in Friday’s 28th annual game put on by the South Williamsport Lions Club at South Williamsport’s Rodney K. Morgans Stadium.

18 seconds into the game Leiby connected with teammate Ricky Cope on a 53 strike putting the South up 7-0 following Elijah Hoffman’s extra point. Two minutes later Leiby threw his second scoring strike, this one to Line Mountain’s Brenden Cregger for 15 yards. After another two minutes, Leiby had his third touchdown pass, a 19-yard strike to teammate Jarrett Inch, and the South All-Stars were up 21-0.

Both teams traded scores in the second quarter starting with the North squad. Jersey Shore’s Elijah Shemory found the end zone from 5 yards out with 11:28 to cut it to 21-7 following North Penn-Mansfield’s Justin Kriner’s extra point. Leiby took back over for the South team, throwing his fourth touchdown to Bloomsburg’s Eric Foust from 15 yards out to push the score to 28-7 with 7:27 remaining until halftime.

The North answered back three minutes later as this time Shemory found North Penn-Mansfield’s Dylan Wesneski from 6 yards out to make it 28-14 after Kriner’s kick.

The South squad capped the half as Leiby connected with Cope again from 29 yards out, putting the South comfortably ahead 35-14 at intermission.

The South squad picked up right where they left off in the third and added three most scores in the quarter. Their first score came from Shikellamy’s Gabe Tilford on a 55-yard scamper with 7:02 remaining, followed by a 21-yard blocked punt return by Lewisburg’s Tony Dressler with 5:59. Then with 1:00 left, Shamokin’s Devin Pietkiewicz scored from 65 yards out.

The North squad sandwiched in a score as Montoursville’s William DeWald recovered a fumble and returned it 85 yards to the house. After the third quarter was over, the South All-Stars held a 56-20 lead.

The game’s final score came with 4:59 remaining as Tilford rumbled from 11 yards out to bring the final to 63-20 for the South squad, ending a three-year losing streak.

Leiby finished 9-for-12 with 241 yards and 5 touchdowns, Tilford carried the ball 13 times for 115 yards, and Cope led the receiving corps with 122 yards on 4 grabs.

Shemory was 20-for-48 for 269 yards with an interception and touchdown for the North and Wesneski caught 13 balls for 138 yards and a touchdown.

  • Hornets set record in 75-0 Homecoming win

The Wellsboro Varsity Football team set a school record for points scored in a 75-0 shutout against Cowanesque Valley on Friday, October 6.

Since the program was restored in 1958, the Hornets’ two previous largest margins of victory came in 1995 (70 vs. CMVT) and 2014 (65 vs. Bucktail) until the Hornet offense exploded for 548 yards, while holding CV to -8 yards of total offense.

“It was nice for the senior guys, it was the first time they’ve had Homecoming on our own field since they were freshman and for the rest of the team they’ve never had a Homecoming they’ve had to travel for. I think they were excited about that and they came ready to play. We executed well,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand.

Once the Hornets got the ball it took them only one play to score as senior Quinn Henry broke several tackles en route to a 39 yard touchdown run with 9:48 showing on the first quarter clock. Senior Nic Ingerick‘s extra point put the Hornets up 7-0.

On Wellsboro’s second drive, Henry connected with sophomore Aidan Hauser from 18 yards out to make it 14-0 with 6:22 remaining. Wellsboro increased their lead to 20-0 three minutes later as Henry threw his second touchdown pass of the evening, this time to senior Dalton Prough from 14 yards out. Just over a minute later senior Chase Moser rushed into the end zone from 11 yards out to put the Hornets up 28-0 asd Hauser threw a two-point conversion pass to Ingerick.

Wellsboro’s final touchdown of the first quarter came on another Henry run, this time from 34 yards out with 42 seconds remaining to make it 35-0.

Hauser kicked off the second quarter scoring as he rushed into the end zone from 34 yards out to make it 42-0 with 10:20 remaining in the first half before Moser intercepted a pass and returned it 32 yards to increase the lead to 49-0.

Henry scored for the third time on the night with 5:56 left before halftime as sophomore connected Karter Witmer with him for his first career Varsity touchdown from 24 yards out to put the Hornets up 56-0.

The Hornets scored once more before the first half expired. After an 11 play drive, sophomore Billy Lechler scored from 3 yards out with 4 seconds remaining to make it 63-0.

With the game well out of reach, the JV team played the entire second half and scored two more touchdowns. The first came on a 37 yard run by sophomore Alex Burrell with 2:08 left in the third quarter, then Witmer ran a quarterback draw from a yard out with 8:26 remaining in the game to bring the final to 75-0, Wellsboro.

Henry finished a perfect 4-for-4 passing with 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also rushed 3 times for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 2 passes for 26 yards and a touchdown, a feat that has never been done in Wellsboro Football history. Henry has now scored 96 total touchdowns during his Wellsboro career.. Witmer finished 3-for-6 for 36 yards.

Burrell led all rushers with 129 yards on 13 carries, Hauser finished with 85 yards on 4 carries, and Lechler had 38 yards on 7 attempts. Prough led all receivers with 33 yards on 2 catches and senior Alex Kozuhowski caught 1 pass for 30 yards.

Sophomore Carson Davis led Wellsboro’s defense with 5 tackles, junior Hunter Brown had 4 tackles and 2 sacks, and Moser, Burrell, senior Collin Pietropola, and junior Robert Brown all had 3 tackles.

The Hornets (7-0, 7-0 NTL Large School Division) will be back in action on Friday, October 13 on the road in Montgomery.

  • Hornet defense keys 49-14 win over Troy

The Wellsboro Hornet defense caused six (5 fumbles and 1 interception) Troy turnovers to improve to 5-0 after a 49-14 win on Friday, September 22.

The Hornets held Troy’s triple option offense in check the majority of the night while holding the Trojans to under 200 yards of total offense. Of the six turnovers caused, Wellsboro’s offense scored off four of those turnovers.

One thing that did hurt the Hornets on Friday was penalties. The Hornets were penalized 8 times for 65 yards in the first half, and 11 for 85 yards for the game. Head coach Matt Hildebrand knows he and the team must clean those up going forward.
“The score probably wasn’t indicative of how we played,” Hildebrand said. “I don’t think we played our best football tonight but I give a lot of credit to Troy though. Troy was definitely by far the most physical team we’ve played this season. They smacked us in the mouth early on. We benefited from their turnovers that put us in some good situations. Take those away and it’s a lot closer game. I knew coming in that Troy is a much better team than their record and they will win some games moving forward.”

While it took the Hornet offense some time to heat up, they still managed to put up 375 total yards. After two Troy drives to start the game, both ending in punts, senior Quinn Henry scampered through the Troy defense for 44 yards to put Wellsboro up 7-0 with 4:57 remaining in the first after senior Nic Ingerick’s extra point.

Troy immediately answered back as a 29-yard kick return by Ja Wallace and a 45-yard run by Tyler Williams put the ball at the Wellsboro 8-yard line. Clark Jackson called his own number and tied the game up just 33 seconds later.

The Hornets mounted an 8-play drive after Troy’s score to retake the lead. A 22-yard run by sophomore Aidan Hauser on the fourth play of the drive got the ball to the Troy 20. Another 7 yard run by Hauser moved the ball to the 13, but the Hornets went in reverse on a negative run and 2 penalties. Faced with a fourth-and-long from the Troy 26, Henry connected with senior Dalton Prough, who went up and over his defender to haul in the touchdown with 2:20 remaining in the first. Hauser ran in the two-point conversion to put the Hornets in front 15-7.

Wellsboro’s next three scores all came off of Troy fumbles.

The first score came with 1:04 left in the first quarter as Henry connected with Hauser from 42 yards out one play after the turnover. The Hornets went for two and Henry connected with sophomore Karter Witmer to put Wellsboro up 23-7. After another lost fumble to close out the first, the Hornets took ove at the Troy 27. After being hit with a holding penalty, Henry rushed for 20 yards down to the 15-yard line and senior Chase Moser scored on the next play to bring the score to 29-7.
Midway through the second the Hornet defense caused yet another Troy fumble, but this time sophomore Zach Florio scooped it up and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. Ingerick’s extra point split the upright and the Hornets led 36-7.
Troy coughed the ball up for a fourth time in the first half but the Hornets were unable to capitalize as they were hit with two penalties and were forced to punt.

Troy started the second half by recovering an onside kick and took over at midfield. A 35-yard run by Nate Martin put the Trojans in scoring position where Jackson again scored from 8 yards out to bring the score to 36-14 after Seldon Rogers’ kick. Wellsboro’s offense again got off to a slow start, but the defense was there to help them out.

After a Henry interception in the end zone, Troy started at their own 20-yard line, but a Michael Borden fumble gave the Hornets back the ball at the Troy 27. A 21 yard run by Henry got the ball to the 6 where Moser scored for the second time to make it 42-14 with 4:10 remaining. After a Troy punt on their next drive the Hornets tacked on 7 more points. Henry scored his second rushing touchdown, and the 48th of his career, from 27 yards out.

Henry finished with 139 yards rushing on 12 carries and was 10-for-16 through the air for 99 yards. Hauser finished with 89 yards rushing on 13 carries and caught 4 passes for 49 yards. Prough caught 3 balls for 38 yards and senior Alex Kozuhowski caught a pass for 9 yards.

Defensively, Moser and juniors Hunter Brown and Robert Brown all had 10 tackles each. Moser forced 2 fumbles, Hunter Brown recovered 3 fumbles, and senior Collin Pietropola recovered a fumble and made 6 tackles. Sophomore Silas Wagaman had an interception for Wellsboro.

“It was a good test for us tonight and I think moving ahead how the game unfolded it will serve us well,” continued Hildebrand. “The kids needed to be tested a little bit and have some adversity and see how they were going respond. I think the next couple of weeks, going down to Muncy on the road again, it’s going to be big for us to come out strong right from the get-go. We can’t let a team get up on us, we have to take care of it early.”

The win improves the Hornets to 5-0 (5-0 NTL Large School Division). Next up for the Hornets is a date with undefeated Muncy (5-0, 4-0 NTL Small School Division) on Friday, September 29.
“We’re happy being 5-0 it’s where we want to be sitting right now and we control our own destiny moving ahead,” concluded Hildebrand. “We just have to continue to press every week and get better. We have to clean up things, things were sloppy tonight. We have to clean up penalties, we can’t be in third-and-20’s, we don’t have a lot of good plays for that down and distance. From an offensive standpoint we have to clean that up. We’ll keep moving ahead and play our brand of football every week.”

  • Moser’s three touchdowns lead Hornets past Sayre

The Wellsboro Green Hornet Football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 48-14 win over Sayre on Friday, September 1.

Last week the Hornets had 555 yards of total offense. This week they managed just 357 yards (285 in the first half), mainly due to untimely penalties (12 for 120 yards) during big offensive plays.

“We executed well at times but then I think we lost focus a little bit,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand (41-8). “We have some penalties that we have to clean up, personal fouls, things like that, things you can control. Those are things we need to clean up moving into next week because they’ll catch up to you and you’ll lose a game.”

This game was however, a better start for the Hornets as they put up the game’s first points. After a three-and-out by the Redskins on their opening drive, the Hornets’ opening drive consisted of nine plays, highlighted by a 35-yard run by sophomore Aidan Hauser and 19-yarder by senior Quinn Henry before Hauser scored from four yards out with 5:43 left in the opening quarter. Senior Collin Pietropola‘s kick split the uprights and the Hornets led 7-0.

Not to be outdone by the offense, Wellsboro’s defense again got in on the scoring. Last week a safety, this week a touchdown as senior Chase Moser stepped in front of a Corbin Brown pass and returned it 45 yards to the end zone. Pietropola’s second kick of the night was good, and Wellsboro was up 14-0 with 4:04 left.

Wellsboro’s scoring machine accounted for four more scores in the first half, while the defense did their part and held the Redskins to -42 yards of total offense.

Hauser scored his second touchdown of the evening from a yard out with 1:42 remaining and a two-point conversion from Henry to senior Dalton Prough made it 22-0. Three plays later a 29 yard pass from Henry to Prough 28-0 to start the second quarter, then a 49-yard run by Henry made it 35-0 following freshman Zach Singer’s extra point with 8:41 remaining in the first half.

Wellsboro scored once more before the first half expired as Moser, this time on the offensive side of the ball, broke a 65-yard run down the Sayre sideline 2:13 remaining to push the score to 42-0 in favor of the Hornets.

Moser would pick up where he left off to start the third quarter as the senior running back broke off another long run, this time for 45 yards, before being tackled at the one. Moser capped the drive a play later for his second rushing touchdown, and third of the night, to make it 48-0.

From that point on, Wellsboro’s second stringers got playing time, but unlike last week, they struggled to move the ball on their three drives.

That’s when the Redskins capitalized on offense.

Aided by two personal fouls, the Redskins put their first points up on the scoreboard as Brown and Gage Carnike connected on a 12-yard pass with 4:05 left in the third to make it 48-12. Later in the fourth, Brown threw his second touchdown pass, this time to Connor Harbst, from 26 yards out for the game’s final points.

Henry was 4-for-5 through the air for 58 yards and the touchdown to Prough and also rushed for 112 yards and a score on 6 carries. Moser led the Hornets’ ground game with 114 yards and two scores on 5 carries while Hauser finished with 59 yards and two scores on 7 rushes. Prough caught two passes for 32 yards and a score, Hauser caught 2 for 26, and junior Michael McNair and sophomore Alex Burrell each caught passes.

Henry also added a 46-yard punt return on special teams.

“We tried a few different things and a few different looks and get reps on things in the first half,” Hildebrand said of his offensive plan of attack. “I was pleased and we scored in many different ways, not just offense but our defense put points on the board. We had some young guys come in and kick for us tonight that have never done it before. It makes us a hard team to defend.”

Defensively, junior Hunter Brown had 10 tackles, junior Robert Brown recorded 6 tackles, and sophomore Zach Florio recorded 4 tackles and 2 sacks, giving him 5 sacks on the year.

Wellsboro held Sayre to 116 yards of total offense. Brown finished 12-for-25 for 155 yards passing, Austin Arnett led the way on the ground with 12 yards on 7 carries, but the team rushed for -39 yards as a whole. Dominik Mazzarese finished with 4 catches for 99 yards.

“Our defense just swarmed to the ball the entire night,” Hildebrand continued. “Mike Pietropola does a great job every week getting the guys ready for games. The guys play with emotion and execute every week.”

Next week the Hornets host Athens (2-0), 26-12 winners over North Penn-Mansfield, in a battle of two unbeaten teams.

“I’m looking forward to it,” concluded Hildebrand. “I think our guys will be ready. It’s always a tough game when Athens comes to town but I think the guys will be pretty pumped up for next Friday.”

  • Hornets’ season comes to an end against South Williamsport in D4 AA semis

edweek112016The Wellsboro Football team’s magic season came to an end with 3 seconds left on the clock in a 28-24 loss to South Williamsport in the District IV Class AA semi-finals on Friday, November 11.

Leading 24-21 after junior Nic Ingerick booted a 23 yard field goal with 4:27 remaining in the game, South Williamsport put together the game’s final, game-winning drive.

Starting at their own 32-yard line, the Mounties marched 68 yards in 12 plays, 10 of those being on the ground by Ashton Martin with two completions from AJ Flick to Rion Withers. With time running out Flick faked the ball to Gideon Green, who only played 2 plays in the second half after being injured in the first, then ran a naked bootleg around the left end of the Hornet defense from a yard out to give the Mounties a 28-24 lead.

Wellsboro had a chance to make one last play on the game’s last kickoff. Junior Alex Kozuhowski fielded the at his 24-yard line and returned it up to the 36. As Kozuhowski was getting tackled he lateraled the ball to junior Chase Moser. Moser broke free from the pile, but Kozuhowski’s forward progress was ruled dead, ending the game.

South scored the game’s first points as Martin recovered a fumble and returned it 45 yards to make it 7-0 with 7:04 remaining in the first. The score stayed that way until early in the second quarter when they scored again. A sack ended the Hornets’ second drive at South’s 27-yard line, and the Mounties turned to their ground game that featured a heavy dose of Gideon Green and Martin. The two combined for 11 of the 12 plays before Green punched the ball in from a yard out to make it 14-0.

Wellsboro came alive on their next drive as junior Quinn Henry broke an 85 yard run to close the gap to a 14-7 difference with 9:33 remaining in the first half. South put together two more drives, each consisting of 10+ plays, to close out the first half.

Wellsboro started the second half with the ball and put together a 6-play drive, highlighted by a 51-yard run by Henry down inside the South 13. Three plays later Henry hit Moser from 9 yard out on a swing pass to tie the game at 14-14 with 9:15 left.

South scored on their next drive as Martin carried the way after Green was helped off the field in the second quarter. Martin rushed 7 times and scored from 6 yards out to make it 21-14 with 4:50 left in the third. The Hornets’ next drive ended with an interception, but the Hornet defense held and forced South to punt.

Wellsboro took over, down Henry and senior Parker Jones due to injuries, at their own 43. After a holding penalty senior Brandon Lamphier hit Kozuhowski with a bomb down the Wellsboro sideline and Kozuhowski carried it the remainder of the way for a 67-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21-21.

Wellsboro again held South on downs on their ensuing drive and forced another punt. Taking over at their own 20-yard line after a touchback. Moser picked up 10 yards on their second play from scrimmage for a first down, then Lamphier connected with junior Dalton Prough for a huge 37-yard pass to the South 32. The Hornets had trouble moving the ball on their next three plays, but Lamphier again found Prough on fourth down, this time for a gain of 21, for first-and-goal down to the South 8. Wellsboro again had trouble moving the ball, but managed to get points on Ingerick’s field goal.

Lamphier led the Hornet air attack with 135 yards on 4-of-6 passing with a touchdown and interception. Henry went 1-for-2 for 9 yards and rushed 6 times for 144 yards and a score before leaving the game with an injury. Moser finished with 47 yards on 10 attempts. Kozuhowski was the leading receiver with 67 yards on his only catch and Prough added 58 yards on 2 receptions.

Henry finished the year with 1,074 yards, his second straight 1,000 yard rushing season. He now has 2,128 yards for his career on the ground, and with 846 yards passing this season, he has thrown for 2,222 yards. Henry also became the third Hornet to rush for back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. Tim Driebelbies (1984, 1985) and Chris Morral (1992, 1993) are the other two.

Lamphier finished the season 12-for-23 for 268 yards, and threw for 541 yards for his career. As a receiver he caught 14 passes for 283 yards this season, and had 26 catches for 507 yards and 7 touchdowns for his career. Jones finished his offensive career with 828 yards on 59 catches and 12 touchdowns in only two years. On the defensive side of the ball, Jones finished with 96 tackles from his defensive end position for the year, and 179 tackles and 14 sacks for his career.

On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Robert Brown led the team with 22 tackles, junior Collin Pietropola had 14, junior Brent English has 12, and senior Dominic Spencer finished with 11. Brown broke the 100-tackle mark for the season with 114 and Pietropola finished the season with 99.

The loss ends the Hornets’ season with an 11-1 record and is the final game for this year’s senior class. In the time this class went through middle school, Wellsboro won a combined 11 games in 4 years. Once this year’s seniors got to high school, Wellsboro won 39 total games (out of 47), had 2 undefeated regular seasons, won a District IV championship (the only one in school history), and played in a PIAA state playoff game. No other team in Wellsboro history has won as many games in their time in a Green and White uniform.

WellsboroFootball.com would like to congratulate this year’s seniors on a fantastic career, and thank them for everything they have done to turn the Wellsboro program around to what it is today.

  • Hornets shutout Canton, 46-0

edweek12016The Wellsboro Varsity Football team started the 2016 season on a positive note by shutting out Canton 46-0 on Friday, August 26.

It took the Hornets’ offense a few series to come alive as they were forced the punt on their opening drive, then turned the ball over on their second possession. The turnover didn’t hurt the Hornets, however, as junior Alex Kozuhowski intercepted a Ridge Moore pass to give the Hornets the ball at the Canton 35-yard line. Junior Quinn Henry broke a 27-yard run to get down inside the Canton 10, then hit Kozuhowski on an 8 yard pass to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead after junior Nic Ingerick converted the extra point attempt with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets caused a turnover on Canton’s next drive as James Bowman fumbled inside the Canton 30-yard line. Canton would get the ball back three plays later, however. Henry again broke a long run, this time for 35 yards, but fumbled at the 2-yard line. Wellsboro would capitalize three plays later as sophomore Hunter Brown sacked Moore in the end zone for a 5 yard loss and safety to put the Hornets up 9-0 with 2:00 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Hornets turned the ball over for a third time in the first half as Henry fumbled 2 plays after getting the ball back after the safety, but the Hornet defense forced Canton to punt to get the ball back at the Wellsboro 37-yard line. Runs by Henry and freshman Aidan Hauser moved the ball inside the Warriors’ 30-yard line, where Henry would cap the 9-play drive with 7:58 remaining in the first half on a 27-yard run to put the Hornets up 16-0 after Ingerick’s extra point.

Wellsboro added two more scores before the first half came to an end. The first cam with 3:11 remaining, as Hauser scored his first career touchdown on a 6-yard run, after a 24-yard pass from Henry to senior Parker Jones and a 9-yard run by Henry set the ball up at the Canton 6-yard line. Then as the first half expired, Ingerick booted a 27-yard field goal to make it 26-0 Hornets at the half.

Wellsboro picked up right where they left off in the second half, and cleaned up their sloppy first half play. On the second series of the second half, Hauser carried the way with runs of 5, 4, 8, and finally punched the ball in from 10 yards out to put the Hornets up 33-0 with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hornets scored twice more in the game. With 3:14 remaining in third, Kozuhowski scampered 37 yards and senior Jacob Singer made the extra point to make it 40-0. Freshman Billy Lechler scored the game’s final touchdown from 11 yards out with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter to give the Hornets the 46-0 NTL Large School win.

“You’ll definitely take a win in the first game of the year,” head coach Matt Hildebrand said. “We had a lot of first-game mistakes out there. I think we had over 100 yards in penalties in the first half so I’m not really pleased with that. You go into halftime and we got on them a little bit to improve our focus. If we clean up those things we can be even better.”

Hildebrand, who won his 29th career game as head coach (third all-time in Wellsboro head coaching history behind Russ Manney and Ted Yeager), thought the team responded well after halftime.

“It’s the first game of the year so I think we played tight and they just have to loosen up. The boys don’t play well tight, and they never have, so they need to loosen up and have fun. Once they start having fun and play football and stop thinking that’s when things started to move better.”

Wellsboro racked up 398 of total offense on the night, compared to Canton’s 34 yards. Henry went 6-for-11 for 91 yards passing with a touchdown and rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

“We came out together but it was a little sloppy and not what we wanted but a win is a win,” Henry said.

Hauser finished with 101 yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries, and Kozuhowski accumulated 53 yards rushing on 5 carries and caught 3 passes for 57 yards. Junior Dalton Prough caught 2 passes for 10 yards and Jones had a catch for 24 yards.

“I couldn’t do it with my linemen,” Hauser said. “They opened up hole and I ran through them.”

Defensively, sophomore Robert Brown recorded 8 tackles and a sack, Hunter Brown made 6 stops and recorded a sack, junior Collin Pietropola made 4 tackles, Jones had 3 stops and a sack, and senior Kaleb Smith had a sack.

Next week the Hornets (1-0, 1-0 NTL Large School Division) travel to Sayre, who lost 18-6 to Wyalusing, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

  • Hornets season comes to an end

edweek112014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team’s season came to an end as they fell 36-26 to North Penn in the first round of District IV Class A playoffs on Friday, November 7.

Unlike last week, Wellsboro didn’t have the magic to rebound after North Penn’ scores and were in catch up mode all night. Turnovers did the Hornets in on the night as Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola had four passes intercepted, his highest in a game during his carrer.

“When you turn the ball over as much as we did tonight it doesn’t sit well,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand. “Last week we turned the ball over too but were fortunate enough to get a few bounces our way but that didn’t this week.

“It’s not all on the guys,” Hildebrand went on to say. “There were some situations that I maybe put us in that we shouldn’t have been in. Maybe I should have punted a couple of times early on in the first half. You second guess yourself now but they (North Penn) are a good football team and I think we are pretty evenly matched and were to come out and do it again there is a shot that we come out on top again so it’s a tough one right now.”

The Hornet defense held the Panthers to a three-and-out on their opening drive and got the ball on the 35-yard line to start. The Hornets marched right down the field as Pietropola, Senior Jarret Dean, and Junior Nick Tremper got the team down to the North Penn 23-yard line before Pietropola’s first pass was intercepted in the end zone for a touchback.

North Penn couldn’t get anything going and both teams traded drives until the Panthers finally flipped the field position in the punting game after downing the Hornets at their own one-yard line. North Penn stopped the Hornets and regained possession at the Wellsboro 37-yard line. Two plays later, Bo Burleigh connected with Luke Kelly for a 25 yard pass to put the Panthers up 6-0 with 2:13 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Hornets’ next drive stalled and they were forced to punt the ball back to North Penn, but the Panthers were unable to gain the required yardage after crossing into Hornet territory. The Hornets got the ball back on their own 15-yard line and on the next play Pietropola threw a dart to Senior Kieron Smethers who accelerated past the Panther defense for an 85 yard touchdown. Senior Jack Chambers connected on the extra point to give Wellsboro a 7-6 lead, their only one of the game with 8:57 remaining in the first half.

Both teams traded drives before the Panthers put an 11 play drive together to retake the lead. North Penn’s Levi Christman put North Penn back in front 12-7 on a nine yard run up the middle with 2:03 left. They would pad that lead as Burleigh called his own number from eight yards out to make it an 18-7 lead at halftime.

The Hornets would receive the second half kick but were unable to get any offense going and punted the ball back to North Penn. The Hornet defense would get the ball back just a few plays later as Senior Nick Marple stepped in front of a Burleigh pass. All was for naught as the Hornets would turn the ball right back over two plays later. Bryce Zaparzynski intercepted a Pietropola pass that grazed off a Hornet receiver’s hands and took it 45 yards to the house to give North Penn a 24-7 lead with 9:22 showing on the clock in the third quarter.

Both teams traded drives again following the North Penn touchdown. After stopping the Panthers, Wellsboro got the ball back at their own 30-yard line. After a seven yard run by Pietropola, the signal caller hit Marple on a nice over-the-shoulder catch for a gain of 57 yards to get the Hornets into the red zone at the Panthers’ 16-yard line. After a three yard pass to Marple, Pietropola’s next pass was intercepted in the end zone to give North Penn back the ball.

The Panthers would then travel the 80 yards and would score with 16 seconds remaning in the third quarter as Burleigh hit Christman on a 17 yard pass to put the Panthers up 30-7.

Wellsboro would answer back after the Panther score. Pietropola hit Smethers on back-to-back passes before a six yard run. On the next play Pietropola hit Marple for 45 yards to make the score 30-13 after Chambers’ extra point was blocked with 11:17 remaining in the game.

North Penn would score their last touchdown on the next drive as Zaparzynski found the end zone from seven yards out with 9:25 remaining to go up 36-13.

Wellsboro’s following drive was stopped again on an interception, but the Wellsboro defense stepped up and forced the Panthers to punt. The Hornets went to work through the air as Pietropola hit Senior Nick Levindoski twice, Junior Anthony Cooper twice, and Smethers once to get the Hornets to the Panthers’ 14-yard line. Pietropola and Dean carried the ball to get to the eight-yard line and Pietropola hit Marple for five yards before calling his own number from three yards out with 3:27 left in the game. Chambers hit the extra point this time to bring the score to 36-20.

After stopping North Penn on their ensuing drive the Hornets would get the ball back for the final time. Pietropola again took to the air and hit Senior Dylan Widows for 13 yards and back-to-back passes to Levindoski and Marple to get to the North Penn four-yard line. Pietropola threw his third touchdown pass on the next play as he found Marple in the end zone with nine seconds remaining. Chambers’ kick split the uprights bringing the final score to 36-26 in favor of the Panthers.

Pietropola finished the game with 388 yards passing as he went 26-for-42 on the night. Pietropola’s three touchdown passes gave him 23 for the season and 68 for his career, a new Wellsboro Varsity Football Record* and District IV record. He also ends the season with 2,162 yards becomming the only quarterback in Wellsboro history to throw for over 2,000 yards in multiple seasons. His final career yardage stands at 6,150.

“Michael is a great kid and great athlete but a better person,” Hildebrand said of his quarterback. “He has a great work ethic and that’s what has gotten him to the point where he is today. He deserves all the recognition and everything that he gets. It didn’t happen overnight, there was a lot of hours and hard work put in during the off-season and the weight room and has set a new precedent for quarterbacks at Wellsboro and in District IV and I hope his has bigger things to come.”

Pietropola also was the leading rusher on the night as he gained 50 yards on 14 carries. Mack carried the ball six times for two yards, giving him 861 on the year. Marple was the leading receiver as he caught nine passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Smethers caught six passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, Levindoski caught six passes for 77 yards, and Cooper hauled in two passes for 38 yards.

Marple ends the season with 931 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the team, while Smethers finished with 712 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Tremper led the team with 10 tackles, giving him 105 for the season. Pietropola and Senior Trystan Wheatley each added nine on the night, and Seniors Michael Brostrom and Ben Davis each had seven.

The Hornets end the 2014 season with a record of 8-3 (3-2 NTL Division 1), while North Penn will face South Williamsport for the District IV Class A championship next week.

Wellsboro has enjoyed their first back-to-back winning seasons since the team finished 9-2 and 6-3 in 1995 and 1996 under former head coach Russ Manney. Hildebrand credits his seniors for this accomplishment and for turning the program around from a one or two win team every year.

“This group are a great bunch of kids. I was able to coach them back in Middle School and I knew we had something special then,” Hildebrand said. “I hope I was able to get the full potential out of each kid, but they really set the standard for this program and got us the respect level that it is now and put us on the map. These guys had a great journey. They’re the reason we went to Indianapolis this summer, the reason why we went 10-0 in the regular season last year, and the reason why we won eight games this year.

“It’s a new standard for the program because we were satisfied with a 5-5 season and now we’re upset that we finished 8-3 but that’s a good thing because it sets the standard for younger guys to come and this group has done a great job of setting the bar high for the program. This group will be very successful in anything they do in life because they have high standards and expect so much from themselves and everybody around them,” Hildebrand concluded.

  • Northern Tier League Roundup – Week 10

The regular season is in the books and the Northern Tier League is now focused on playoffs. Troy and North Penn tied for the Division 1 title while South Williamsport won Division 2.

    Wellsboro 28, North Penn 26

The Hornets rallied from a 20-14 deficit at halftime to beat North Penn for the third year in a row and retain the Morton F. Jones Memorial Trophy. After the Panthers scored on their opening drive on a two yard run by Bryce Zaparzynski, the Hornets answered back to trail 8-7. Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola and Senior Running Back Levi Mack gained 13 yards and 11 yards, respectively on the first two plays before Pietropola hit Junior Anthony Cooper for a 21 yard pass completion. Pietropola then picked up three yards before hitting Cooper in the front of the end zone in front of two Panther defenders for the nine yard score. Senior Jack Chambers‘ kick split the uprights and the Hornets trailed 7-8 with 6:57 left in the opening frame.

North Penn would score on their next drive as Bo Burleigh hit Zaparzynski on a 33 yard pass down the sidelines to take a 14-7 lead. The Panthers would then extend their lead to 20-7 with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half as a Wellsboro fumble gave the Panthers excellent field position. Zaparzynski would score his third touchdown of the half on a five yard run. Wellsboro added a score right before the end of the half as Mack found the end zone from two yards out to bring the score to 20-14 North Penn.

The Hornets opened the second half with a score on their opening drive. The Hornets took to the ground for the majority of the drive as Pietropola, Mack, and Senior Jarret Dean to get the Hornets to the Panthers’ 43-yard line. From there Pietropola hit Smethers for a five yard gain followed by a eight yard gain by Dean to give the Hornets a first down on the North Penn 25-yard line. Pietropola hit Senior Nick Levindoski for 10 yards and then called his own number on his way to a 15 yard touchdown to put Wellsboro up 21-20 after Chambers’ extra point.

North Penn answered right back on their opening drive, aided by two costly Wellsboro penalties. Zaparzynski eventaully scored his third rushing touchdown from 13 yards out to go up 26-21 with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter. The Hornets would answer back and would take the lead for good on their next drive. Pietropola and Dean were the workhorses on the drive and got the Hornets to the Panthers’ 11-yard line before getting hit with a holding call. Smethers caught a four yard pass on first-and-20 and two plays later caught his only touchdown of the game from 16 yards out with 16 seconds left in the quarter. Chambers’ extra point gave the Hornets the 28-26 lead which they would hold on to.

    Troy 23, Canton 8

The Trojans won the Old Shoe in the game’s 60th anniversary and also earned the NTL large school title (which they will share with North Penn) for the first time since 1988. Both teams went scoreless in the first quarter as they traded punts, but Troy struck with 11:56 to play in the second on a three yard run by Ben Sherman. Nick Stephani added the extra point to put the Trojans up 7-0. After a Canton fumble and two more punts, Troy increased their lead to 14-0 with 3:57 in the half as Diante Jones raced 70 yards down the right sideline for the touchdown to end the scoring for the first half.

Troy went up 17-0 midway through the third quarter on a 15 yard Stephani field goal. Canton would finally get on the scoreboard with 8:07 remaining in the game. After a few key passes from John Bowman, the Warriors would set up at the Trojan seven yard line for a first and goal. Noah Barnett ran in the easy seven yards for the score. The Warriors would go for the two-point conversion and add those extra points with a completed pass from Bowman to Malachi Washington to cut the Trojans’ lead to 17-8.

Troy would score once more on the night, with a 41-yard touchdown run from Chance Lantz with just over five minutes left in the game. This time, though, the PAT from Layton Calkins would fall short, setting the final score at 23-8.

    Athens 49, Sayre 0

After a disappointing 2014 season, Athens won three of their final four games to finish the season on a high note as they shut out the Sayre Redskins in the Rusty Rail game. Athens quarterback Tyler Forbes had a big day, running 14 times for 164 yards and four scores and completing 3-of-5 passes for 73 yards.

Forbes scored his first touchdown of the night with 9:13 of the first quarter on a three yard run to give Athens the early lead. Peyton Lewis scored with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter to put Athens up 14-0 on a two yard run. Forbes struck again at 9:30 of the second quarter on an eight yard run and he ended the half with a 67 yard run.

In the third quarter Forbes scored again on an 18 yard run at 9:30 and then Brandon Sturzenegger got into the act at 3:40 with a five yard run. Kalen Keathley capped the scoring with 3:32 left in the game on a one yard run.

Athens finishes the 2014 season with a record of 4-6 while Sayre ends at 3-7.

    Towanda 42, Wyalusing 10

The Black Knights earned a berth in District IV Class AA playoffs as they scored 35 unanswered points after falling behind early. Fumbles would be the Rams’ downfall as star running back Luke Jennings coughed the ball up four times on the night.

The Rams struck first on their opening drive as they would take a 3-0 lead on a 28 yard Warner Mendoza field goal after a 14 play drive. Towanda would answer right back, as Steven Yates busted off a 44-yard run followed by Noah Huff’s seven-yard touchdown run. Tyler Basse’s PAT made it 7-3. Wyalusing would answer back after Towanda’s score with a short, four play drive that started at their own 47-yard line. Justin Haley scored from two yards out at the 2:57 mark to put Wyalusing back up, 10-7. From that point on, Towanda’s defense turned up the intensity and shut out the Rams.

The next three drives all resulted in fumbles. First, Jennings fumbled the ball with Towanda recovering. Just three plays later, Towanda QB Noah Huff lost control of the ball giving the Rams possession. However, Jennings fumbled again on the next drive to give the ball back to the Black Knights.

Towanda would go up 14-10 on Wyalusing after Huff connected with Dylan Bates on a 10 yard pass before the first half ended. Towanda extended their lead on their opening possession of the second half as they put together an 11 play, 65 yard drive that culminated in a Huff sneak from the one-yard line and a 21-10 Towand lead with 7:00 left in the third quarter.

Another Jennings fumble on Wyalusing’s first play on their ensuing drive would set up the next score, as the Knights traveled 65 yards in eight plays. Huff again found Bates on a three yard pass, and Basse’s extra point made it 28-10 with 4:17 left in the third. The teams would trade punts into the fourth quarter before Huff again went to the air, connecting with Brandon McClinko on a 41-yard completion to the five. From there Yates went in to make it 35-10. The Knights closed out the scoring with Huff’s third touchdown pass, this time connecting with Tyler Vanderpool on a 38 yard pass, as Basse’s final PAT made it 42-10.

  • Hornets sneak past Panthers, 28-26.

edweek102014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team overcame three turnovers to beat North Penn 28-26 and retain possession of the Morton F. Jones Trophy for the third consecutive year on Friday, October 31 on Senior Night.

The Panthers started off with the football and marched down the field on the Hornet defense in 11 plays. Bryce Zaparzynski scored the game’s first points with 8:35 remaining on a two yard run. Bo Burleigh’s pass to Levi Christman on the two-point conversion gave the Panthers the early 8-0 lead.

The Hornets would answer back on their opening drive.

North Penn answered back on their next drive as Burleigh hit Christman on a 21 yard pass and then connected with Zaparzynski for a 33 yard touchdown pass to complete the four-play drive and take a 14-7 lead after the two-point conversion failed.

Wellsboro’s second drive is when the turnover bug started. After being faced with third-and-12 Pietropola hit Senior Dylan Widows to pick up the first down but then put the ball on the ground two plays later. North Penn jumped on the loose ball and recovered at the Wellsboro 46-yard line. After a 15 yard run by Zaparzynski the Hornet defense tightened up and got the ball back on downs after a Burleigh pass fell incomplete.

The next two drives for each team stalled as time wound down in the second quarter. After the Wellsboro defense held the Panthers again and forced a punt, Pietropola coughed the ball back over to the visitors on the Wellsboro 19-yard line. North Penn capitalized and took a 20-7 lead Zaparzynski scored from five yards out with 3:01 remaining in the half.

The Hornets got the ball back and immediately went to work. Pietropola connected with Senior Kieron Smethers for a nine-yard gain on first down and Mack put together runs of five and six yards on the next two plays to move the ball to the North Penn 40-yard line. Pietropola then hit Senior Nick Marple for a seven yard gain. Pietropola then scampered for eight yards on first down from the Panthers’ 28-yard line before Mack gained 16 yards on his next two runs before finishing the drive with a two yard touchdown run with 26 seconds remaining. After Chambers’ extra point kick, the Hornets trailed 20-14 at halftime.

“We made the adjustment to switch over to the run game at halftime,” Pietropola said. “Their weakness was their run defense so we wanted to exploit it.

“Our offensive line took over and started crushing people and we started running people over.”

North Penn picked up one first down on their ensuing drive before the Hornets foced them to punt on their own 43-yard line. As time wound down in the fourth quarter the Hornets took to the ground to keep the clock moving. The plan worked as Pietropola, Mack, and Dean were consistently picking up four or five yards every play. Wellsboro would turn the ball over one more time as Mack lost control of the ball on the North Penn 16-yard line.

The Wellsboro defense played their best five plays of the year on the next drive. After a long pass from Burleigh to Dayton Wood, the defense stuffed Burleigh for a one yard gain before forcing three straight incompletions and getting the ball back on downs. The Hornets again took to the ground to run the clock out after North Penn used up their last time out, clinching the NTL Division 1 victory.

“It was a tight game all night,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand. “Our boys fought well all night. We turned the ball over there at the end which is something we can’t do, but we were able to come away with the win.”

Pietropola ended the night going 15-for-23 for 124 yards and two touchdowns and was the leading rusher with 144 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Mack ended up with 76 yards on 18 carries and Dean had 48 on nine attempts.

Smethers was the leading receiver on the night with six catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. Cooper caught two passes for 30 yards and a score, Levindoski caught two balls for 32 yards, Marple caught two passes for 11 yards, Widows caught two passes for 10 yards, and Freshman Quinn Henry caught a pass for -2 yards.

“Anytime you play North Penn you want that trophy to stay and now that we’ve kept it for the last three years its an awesome feeling,” Pietropola concluded.

Next week, the Hornets will travel to Island Park as the #3 seed Hornets take on the #2 seed Panthers in the first round of District IV Class A playoffs.

“We’re peaking at the right time and hopefully there are bigger and better things to come,” concluded Hildebrand. “We’ve set ourselves up for a rematch next week and its never easy to beat a team twice but we’ll study film and look to do the same thing.”

Huff’s one yard run and kick by Tyler Basse brought the score to 28-14 Wellsboro with 7:34 remaining in the game. Yates scored late in the quarter to bring the score to 28-21, but Towanda’s onside kick attempt following the touchdown failed to go the required 10 yards giving Wellsboro the ball and the win.

    Canton 52, Cowanesque Valley 27

The Canton Warriors rushed for over 350 yards and six touchdowns as they handed the visiting Cowanesque Valley Indians their fifth consecutive loss.

Canton struck first as Noah Barnett returned the game’s opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Trevor Route, the hero from last week’s 37-36 victory over North Penn, missed his first extra point attempt and Canton led, 6-0.

CV would answer Canton’s opening score with one of their own on their opening drive. One play later Mead converted the extra point try to give CV their only lead on the night at 7-6.

Canton failed to produce on the drive following the free kick and would turn the ball over on downs after a wide open Washington dropped a pass in the end zone on fourth down.

The Indians would put a few plays together before Calaman’s pass was intercepted by John Bowman. This time Canton would capitalize on the opportunity as Jimmy Bowman ran the ball three times for 53 yards on the drive and scored a two yard touchdown to put Canton up 22-7.

North Penn’s leading rusher Bryce Zaparzynski was out of the lineup, but Levi Christman stepped in to lead the Panthers in rushing and receiving yards on the night and scored three touchdowns.

Christman started the scoring as he recovered a fumble as ran it 27 yards to the end zone for the score. The Panthers’ ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed and they led 6-0 with 9:05 remaining in the opening frame. Five minutes later Christman found the end zone again, this time on a 22 yard run. Dayton Wood caught Bo Burleigh’s two-point conversion pass to put the Panthers up 14-0.

Troy struck first after both teams traded opening possessions that ended in punts. Nick Stephani and Brandon Mattocks rotated running the ball on Troy’s second possession, setting them up at the Athens 12-yard line. From there, Chance Lantz busted through the middle and into the end zone for the first score on the night. With 4:55 left in the quarter, Stephani’s extra point would make it 7-0.

The Wildcat offense answered right back within the next minute. On third-and-10 on their own 25, Tyler Forbes completed a 75 yard pass to Kalen Keathley for a touchdown with only 3:49 to play. The Trojans would keep their lead at 7-6 as Austin Lister’s extra point attempt would fall short. Troy extended their lead to 14-6 on their next drive as they continued to run the football. Ben Sherman and QB Isaac Havens tossed in some yards along with Stephani and Mattocks, bringing the ball to the Athens five-yard line for a first and goal before Lantz found the end zone for the second time on the night.

Troy then went up 21-6 as Havens would keep the ball and run 46 yards for the touchdown with 9:53 remaining in the opening half. Athens cut the lead to 21-14 as Forbes connected with Lister on a 16 yard pass to finish the Wildcats’ 11-play drive. The Wildcats would then set up for the extra point, but they went for the fake as Aaron Barry completed a pass to Bill Bennett for the two-point conversion with the clock reading 4:54.

Troy added one more score before the half ended when Stephani scored from 20 yards out and kicked the extra point to take a 28-14 lead at the half. The Trojans added to their lead at the 6:20 mark of the third quarter as Stephani scored from 33 yards away and added the extra point as well to make the score 35-14 Troy.

Athens would rebound with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. After forcing a Troy punt on fourth-and-24, Athens executed a quick, two play drive that ended with a Payton Lewis touchdown grab to bring the score to 35-21 Troy with 10:25 to go in the game. Just a few minutes later, Athens recovered a Mattocks fumble and regained possession at the Troy 37-yard line. Forbes worked his magic, throwing three complete passes until finally, at the three-yard line on first-and-goal, he ran it into the end zone for the easy score. Lister added the extra point, and with 8:29 to play in the game, the Wildcats cut the lead to 35-28.

Despite Athens’ attempts to stop the running game, Troy continued to eat up yards and found themselves outside of the Wildcats’ end zone. Athens stopped Troy on third down from the three-yard line, but Stephani added a short field goal to claim the 38-28 victory.

    South Williamsport 55, Sayre 24

Senior Dominick Bragalone continued his stellar 2014 season as he rushed for 259 yards on 11 carries to lead the Mounties to a blowout 55-24 win against the Redskins. Bragalone started the scoring with 9:43 left in the first quarter as he scored from 25 yards to put the Mounties up 7-0 after Logan Wein’s kick. Bragalone then scored at 7:16 on a 32 yard run to make it 14-0.

With 4:16 left in the opening quarter South’s John Peters ran in a score from 11 yards out to make it 21-0 after the Wein point after. At the start of the second quarter Bragalone scored on a 47 yard run to put South up 27-0. Back-to-back four yard runs from Peters and quarterback Matt Boone made it 41-0. Boone would then hit Riley Thomas for a three yard scoring strike to take a 48-0 lead.

Sayre eventually got on the scoreboard with 2:14 left in the second quarter as J.P. Harbst ran the kickoff back 72 yards to cut the deficit to 48-8 as Matthew Ingrassia punched in the tw0-point conversion. South would score once more before the half ended as Boone hit Thomas on a 22 yard pass to go up 55-8.

The Redskins got two scores in the fourth quarter. The first came on a two yard run by Tylor Belles with 8:33 left to play. Gavin Lundy-McCutcheon hit Harbst for the two-point conversion to make it 55-16. Then with 4:03 left to play, Bradly Hatch ran in a touchdown from five yards out followed by Matthew Eberlin running in the point after to make it a 55-24 final.

  • Hornets hang on for 28-21 win against Towanda

edweek92014Despite 14 fourth quarter points by the Towanda Black Knights, the Wellsboro Varsity Football team held on for a 28-21 win on Friday, October 24.

Towanda scored on their opening drive as they put together a six play drive that was capped by a 32 yard pass from Noah Huff to Dylan Bates to put the Black Knights up 7-0 with 8:16 remaining in the opening quarter. Wellsboro was unable to pick up a first down on their opening drive and were forced to punt the ball back to Towanda. The Wellsboro defense buckled down on Towand’s next possession and forced them to punt on fourth down for their own 30-yard line.

Wellsboro scored on their second possession to even the score. After a one yard pass from Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola to Senior Wide Receiver Kieron Smethers, Pietropola found a seam in the Towanda defense and raced 86 yards to the end zone. Senior Jack Chambers’ made the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

“The line got a nice push and Jarret Dean hit the hole hard and made a great block and I took off and never looked back,” Pietropola said. “We brought a lot of heart and effort into tonight. Last week we lost to a good Wyalusing team and that’s definitely a game we wish we had back but we have to let it go and keep moving forward.”

Again, the Hornet defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out after sacking Huff for a seven yard loss. A 23 yard punt return by Junior Anthony Cooper gave the Hornets excellent field position inside the Towanda 25-yard line. Dean got the Hornets down to the six-yard line on a 16 yard run before Pietropola connected with Smethers for a six yard touchdown as time expired in the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead.

The Hornet defense forced their first of five turnovers on the night as they dropped Steven Yates for a four yard loss and caused a fumble after Towanda moved inside the Wellsboro 25-yard line after a 33 yard kick return by Huff set them up at the 50-yard line. The Hornets went right back to work as Pietropola scrambled for 24 yards and then connected on a 25 yard pass to Senior Nick Levindoski to move into Towanda territory.

Following an incomplete pass, Pietropola picked up a first down on a 10 yard run and Dean broke free on runs of 17 and four yards to put the Hornets at the Towanda 2-yard line. The following play, Pietropola ran over a Black Knight defender for his second touchdown of the night. Chambers made the extra point and the Hornets led 21-7 with 7:13 left in the first half.

The Hornets and Black Knight traded possessions for the rest of the second quarter and Wellsboro took a 21-7 lead into the half.

“We played great offensive football in the first half and drove the ball down the field,” continued Pietropola. “The defense did a great job containing Huff too.”

For the last two weeks the Hornets have been a first-half team. Against Bloomsburg and Wyalusing the Hornets found their leads slip away in the third quarter. This week however, the Hornets extended their lead in the quarter. After receiving the second half kick, Pietropola took to the air and connected with Smethers on a 42 yard pass to set up shop in the Towanda red zone. However, the Hornets shot themselves in the foot on the drive as two negative running plays and two penalties put the Hornets back at the Towanda 44-yard line facing a 2nd-and-40. Pietropola hit Cooper for 14 yards and Smethers for 12 yards to get the Hornets back to the 18-yard line. Chambers came on to attempt a 35 yard field goal, but the kick just missed to the right giving the ball back to Towanda.

Wellsboro’s defense caused their second caused their second turnover and scored six points of their own as they dropped Huff for a four yard loss and caused him to fumble. Smethers was in the right place at the at the right time as he picked up the loose football and ran the remaining 29 yards to give Wellsboro a 28-7 lead with 6:08 left in the third quarter.

The Wellsboro defense would cause another Huff fumble after Towanda moved the ball to the Wellsboro 35-yard line. Wellsboro could not get anything going on offense as Pietropola was sacked on the first play from scrimmage and the Black Knight line kept Dean and Senior Running Back Levi Mack in check. The Hornets did get to the Towanda 37-yard line with the help of a pass interference call, but came up short on fourth down to give the ball to Towanda.

Towanda would score on the following drive as Huff and Yates were able to find running lanes in the Wellsboro defense. Huff’s one yard run and kick by Tyler Basse brought the score to 28-14 Wellsboro with 7:34 remaining in the game.

Wellsboro recovered Towanda’s onside kick attempt and took over at their own 44-yard line. Dean broke free for 11 yards on the drive’s opening play, but a bad snap dropped Pietropola for an 18 yard loss that would kill the drive and force the Hornets to punt the ball back to Towanda.

Towanda’s following drive was all Huff as he ran three times and threw one pass, but Cooper would intercept Huff’s pass to end the scoring threat. The Hornets took over on their own five-yard line after an unsportsmanlike penalty backed them up half the distance to the goal and would punt the ball back to Towanda after the drive stalled out.

On the first play on Towanda’s next drive, Huff was intercepted again by Cooper to stop the threat. On the Hornets’ first play on the new drive a Dean fumble gave the ball back to the Black Knights on the Hornets 24-yard line.

Towanda would score on a three yard run by Yates to bring the score to 28-21 Wellsboro with just 47 seconds remaining, but the Hornets got the ball back after Towanda’s onside kick attempt failed to go the necessary 10 yards to give the Hornets the NTL Division 1 victory.

“We did well in the first quarter and first half and put a lot of points on the board but we let them right back in it at the end due to our own mistakes,” second year head coach Matt Hildebrand said after the game. “We have to cut that stuff out. They’re things that we can avoid and we really hurt ourselves in the second half. Towanda’s a very good team and they played really well. They fought right down to the very end and we kind of snuck away with one because we let them back in it.”

Hildebrand was pleased that the squad was able to bounce back after last week’s loss to Wyalusing.

“We tell the kids that what happens between Monday and Thursday will happen on Friday night. If you don’t want to feel like you did last week coming off a loss than you have to put more effort and focus into the week. We had our best week of practice this season and we have to repeat that this coming week.”

Pietropola was 11-for-21 for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception passing on the night and was also the leading rusher with 71 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Dean rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries and Mack had 26 yards on eight attempts. Smethers had his second 100-yard receiving game of the year as he caught six passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Senior Nick Marple led the team with 10 tackles. Cooper pitched in with nine tackles and two interceptions, Junior Linebacker Nick Tremper had seven tackles and a forced fumble, and Senior Trystan Wheatley had eight tackles. Smethers and Junior Owen Covert each recorded sacks and Cooper, Smethers, and Mack all recovered fumbles.

Huff rushed for 122 yards on 26 carries and was 7-for-14 for 114 yards and a touchdown but also turned the ball over four total times for the Black Knights.

“I was very impressed with our defense and we had a lot of young guys in their tonight,” concluded Hildebrand. “We started rotating more of our guys around to give some of our two-way players some breaks and we were able to do that with some younger guys and they stepped up and did a great job.”

Next up for Wellsboro is arch rival North Penn. The Hornets host the 8-1 Panthers, who beat Wyalusing 36-15, on Senior Night next Friday, October 31 for the Morton F. Jones Trophy.

  • Northern Tier League Roundup – Week 8

After week 8, there are no more unbeaten teams in the Northern Tier League.

    Canton 37, North Penn 36

The Canton Warriors accomplished what no other team has been able to this past Friday night. Beat North Penn. The Warriors scored the game’s opening points late in the first quarter as Tyler Cole punched the ball in from two yards out after a making a big punt return a few plays earlier. After the extra point was missed, Canton held a 6-0 lead.

Canton’s lead would become short lived as just about two minutes later, North Penn’s Bryce Zaparzynski would score a two yard touchdown of his own and then he would convert the two-point conversion to put the Panthers up 8-6. Canton would answer back on their next drive. Cole scored his second touchdown of the night on a 39 yard run after he broke a few tackles to put the Warriors back up 12-8 after they failed to convert the two-point conversion.

North Penn would score twice more before the end of the half. Their first came on a pass from Bo Burleigh to Levi Christman for 27 yards. The conversion attempt failed and the Panthers held a 14-12 lead. That score would increase to 20-12 going into halftime as Burleigh set up a screen pass for Zaparzynski and he 28 yards for the score.

After a Canton fumble on their opening drive of the second half, Burleigh found Christman again in the end zone, this time for four yards to put the Panters up 28-12 after a successful two-point conversion.

From that point on, Canton would score 18 unanswered points to get back into the game. Their first score came on a four yard carry by Noah Barnett with 8:27 left in the third quarter. The two-point attempt failed and North Penn held a 28-18 lead. Cole scored his third rushing touchdown to bring the score to 28-24 on a seven yard run. Canton would eventually take the lead with 1:41 remaining in the game.

The Warriors took control with 6:15 remaining and used the majority of the clock along with converting three third down conversions to eventually find the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Cole pounded in his fourth touchdown of the game from 10 yards out. The point after was no good as Canton took a 30-28 lead. North Penn bounced back after being aided by Canton penalties to regain the lead. Burleigh hit Dayton Wood on a 29 yard pass and run in the two-point conversion to take a 36-30 lead with 1:05 remaining.

The Warriors had 75 yards to go, no timeouts, and were without Cole who was ejected from the game on a personal foul on the previous drive. Neither of these things were a factor for the Canton offense who used two huge pass plays, one on third down between Bowman and Bryce Cole for 21 yards and another between Cole and Travis Butcher for 25 yards. The Warriors’ first attempt at a game winner was placed just out of the reach of Moore. The second attempt, with just seven seconds left on the clock, could not have been placed any better.

Bowman threw a ball over the defender’s head and over the shoulder of Moore who would haul it in to tie the game at 36 all. The game was won behind the foot of Route who converted the game winning point after.

    Wyalusing 38, Wellsboro 28

The Wellsboro Green Hornets suffered their second NTL Division 1 loss on the year as Wyalusing rushed for 294 yards. The Green Hornets struck first as Levi Mack found the end zone from nine yards out to put the Hornets up 7-0 after Jack Chambers made the extra point with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Wyalusing would answer back after they pinned Wellsboro in their own territory and forced a bad punt. Luke Jennings found the end zone for the first time on the night as he took the ball 24 yards to the house to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:25 remaining in the second quarter. The Hornets would rebound on their following drive to take back the lead. After a few runs by Mack and a 16 yard gain by Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola on fourth down, Pietropola hit Mack on a middle screen that got Wellsboro down to the Rams nine-yard line. On the next play Pietropola found Junior Anthony Cooper in the back of the end zone. The snap on the extra point was bad but Freshman Quinn Henry picked the ball up and hit Junior Nick Tremper for a two-point conversion to take a 15-7 lead with 7:00 remaining in the first half.

The Rams would bring the score to 15-14 five plays later as Ryan Kipp scored from nine yards out. Wyalusing would then take the lead with 14 seconds left in the first half on a 30 yard field goal by Warner Mendoza to take a 17-15 lead at the half after the Rams got the ball inside the Wellsboro 10-yard line after another bad punt.

Wyalusing would score on their first drive of the second half as Jennings caught a pass from Justin Haley and raced 77 yards to the end zone to go up 24-15 with 10:26 remaining in the third quarter. Wellsboro would answer back on their opening drive as Pietropola converted passes to Seniors Nick Levindoski and Nick Marple and with a 16 yard run by Mack, the Hornets found themselves on the Wyalusing six-yard line before Pietropola found Senior Kieron Smethers to trail Wyalusing 24-21.

Jennings found the end zone for the third time, after the Rams forced back-to-back turnovers, as he carried the football 17 yards to put the Rams up 31-21 with 6:30 remaining in the game. Wellsboro would take to the air on their next drive and found themselves at the Rams’ five-yard line after Pietorpola hit Smethers with a 39 yard pass. After a Wyalusing penalty in the end zone moved the ball to the three-yard line, Pietropola ran the ball in a touchdown two plays later and the Hornets trailed 31-28. The score would be the Hornets last on the night.

Wyalusing put the nail in the coffin on the next drive when Jennings snuck through the Hornets defense for a 52 yard touchdown on third-and-two to take the 38-28 lead.

    Sayre 48, Montgomery 19

After being tied 13-13 at the half, Sayre scored out scored the Red Raiders 35-6 in the second half to claim the NTL Division 2 victory. Sayre scored five straight touchdowns, starting with a 23-yard William Hudock run at the 10:20 mark of the third quarter. After the JP Harbst point after, Sayre led 20-13. A Matt Ingrassia 5-yard run five minutes later put the Redskins up 27-13 after Harbst’s kick, then 10 seconds into the fourth quarter Ward scored on a 23-yard touchdown run to make it 34-13 after Harbst’s point after. Ingrassia then scored on a 21-yard touchdown run followed by Harbst punching one in from a yard out to put Sayre up 48-13.

Montgomery scored their lone points of the second half on a 36 yard touchdown strike from Sergi Cole to Keanu Sauers with no time left on the clock to make it a 48-19 final.

    Troy 43, Towanda 28

It was the tale of two halves between Troy and Towanda. The first half of Friday’s game was the Noah Huff show as the Towanda quarterback scored three touchdowns and racked up more than 250 yards of total offense in the half. Troy had few answers for Huff and weren’t able to get anything going offensively as they trailed 21-0.

After the half everything changed as the Trojans scored 43 second-half points on their way to a 43-28 victory on Friday night in Towanda’s Homecoming game. The second half started out with a bang for Troy as Brandon Mattocks took the opening kickoff back 91 yards and just 11 seconds into the half Troy had cut the 21-0 deficit to 21-7. The Trojans cut into the lead even more later in the third quarter when Nick Stephani scored on a 10-yard run with 3:42 left in the quarter. The extra point failed and it was 21-13 Towanda.

Early in the fourth quarter the Trojans tied the ball as Ben Sherman ran in from 24 yards out and Mattocks had the two-point run. With 11:05 left in the fourth it was 21-21. Just over a minute later Troy took the lead as Towanda went to punt from deep in their own territory and Schucker busted in and blocked the kick for the safety to make it 23-21. Troy took the kick after the safety and went right back to work as Sherman ran in from 51 yards out and just 51 seconds after they took the lead the Trojans were up 30-21 after the Stephani extra point.

Towanda got back to within two points as Huff raced 80 yards to the end zone to bring the score to 30-28. Troy added two more scores to finish off the night, both by Mattocks. Mattocks scored on a 16 yard run with 5:38 left and the extra point failed after picking up nine yards on a fake punt on fourth down and with 3:05 left Mattocks had a 54 yard scoring run to close out the game.

    Athens 40, Cowanesque Valley 0

A week after defeating Wyalusing, Athens kept their momentum alive as they shut out Cowanesque Valley. The Wildcats wasted no time in keeping the momentum on their side as Brandon Sturzenegger gave the Indians a raw deal on his 64-yard touchdown for a score with a run down the sideline on the second play of the game. Austin Lister added the PAT for an early 7-0 lead. The Indians responded on the following kickoff as Ethan Mead returned the ball down to the Wildcats’ nine-yard line, but were unable to produce any points.

Athens then turned to Sturzenegger, the Wildcats’ running man, on the next series. Sturzenegger carried the ball seven times on the 12-play drive for 41 yards before scoring on a three yard run. Tyler Forbes narrowly missed scoring on the conversion attempt as he slid just outside of the left side pylon. CV responded with an 11-play drive with Mead carrying the ball seven times for 27 yards and Connor Calaman adding 20 yards on three carries. However, once again, the Wildcat defense tightened up in the red zone and stop the Indians on downs at the 15-yard line.

Athens scored to make it 20-0 when Tyler Forbes converted on third-and-10 at their own 15-yard line when he hit Kalen Keathley, who raced 85 yards for a touchdown just before the end of the first half. Athens and CV traded possessions for much of the second half before the Wildcats’ Payton Lewis scored to make it 33-0 in the fourth quarter. A few minutes later, Lewis broke tackles up the middle of the CV defense before getting away with an 87 yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the game to push the score to 40-0.

  • Hornets fall to Wyalusing, 38-28

edweek82014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team dropped their second game of the year as they lost 38-28 to Wyalusing on Friday, October 17.

For the second week in a row the Hornets got off to a strong start but found themselves trailing late in the game. Unlike last week against Bloomsburg, however, the magical comeback was not in the cards. After trading opening drives the Hornets struck first at 5:04 in the first quarter.

The Hornets put together an eight play drive that covered 62 yards. Senior Running Back Levi Mack put the Hornets up 7-0 after Senior Jack Chambers’ extra point on a nine yard run. Wyalusing put together a long, 10 play drive but the Hornet defense eventually forced the Rams to punt the ball away just inside of the Hornets’ 40-yard line. Pinned deep in their own territory, Wellsboro could not get anything going and would give Wyalusing a short field to set up their first score after a bad punt.

Three plays later, Running Back Luke Jennings found the end zone for the first time on the night as he took the ball 24 yards to the house to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:25 remaining in the second quarter.

The Rams went right back to work on the ensuing drive. The Rams ran the ball five times on the drive highlighted by a 27 yard run by Jennings. Ryan Kipp eventually found the end zone from nine yards out to bring the score to 15-14 with 4:59 remaining in the half. The Hornets next drive ended ended in just five plays as Pietropola was intercepted for the team’s first turnover of the night. Wyaluinsg was unable to capitalize, however, and Wellsboro would get the ball back.

The Hornets could not generate any offense on their next drive and were forced to punt, but a bad snap gave the ball back to the Rams on the Hornets’ six-yard line. Wellsboro’s defense held and kept the Rams out of the end zone. Wyalusing lined up and converted a 30 yard field goal to take a 17-15 lead with 14 seconds left in the half.

Wyalusing received the second half kick and added to their lead as Jennings caught a 77 yard pass from from Justin Haley to go up 24-15 with 10:26 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hornets would bounce back on their following drive. Pietropola converted passes to Seniors Nick Levindoski and Nick Marple and with a 16 yard run by Mack, the Hornets found themselves on the Wyalusing six-yard line before Pietropola found Senior Kieron Smethers to trail Wyalusing 24-21.

With new energy the Hornets forced a turnover on Wyalusing’s next drive. Wyalusing took to the ground again and eventually found themselves at the Wellsboro 38-yard line before Marple intercepted Haley’s next pass and returned it 37 yards to set up the Hornets on the Rams 39-yard line.

After Pietropola’s opening pass fell incomplete, Mack rattled off a seven yard run and Cooper fumbled the ball back to Wyalusing on the next play to end the scoring threat. The Hornets defense would hold again as they eventaully stopped the Rams on fourth down to get the ball back at their own 20-yard line, but another turnover, this time by Mack after a 15 yard run, gave Wyalusing the ball back at the Wellsboro 36-yard line.

Jennings found the end zone for the third time as he carried the football 17 yards to put the Rams up 31-21 with 6:30 remaining in the game.

Pietropola completed 20-of-37 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Mack was the leading rusher with 64 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, and Marple led the team with 10 catches for 99 yards for a new Wellsboro Football Varsity Record*. Smethers caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, Levindoski caught three passes for 24 yards, and Cooper caught one pass nine yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Tremper recorded 18 tackles, Mack had 10 tackles, and Senior Ben Davis had nine.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 6-2 (1-2 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action next Friday, October 24 as they host Towanda.

  • Northern Tier League Roundup – Week 7

After week 7, the North Penn Panthers have taken sole possession of the NTL Division 1 standings.

    North Penn 44, Troy 33

The Panthers spoiled Troy’s Homecoming and knocked them from the ranks of the unbeatens in a back-and-forth game. After both team’s opening drives stalled North Penn opened the score fest as Panther quarterback Bo Burleigh connected with Bryce Zaparzynski on a three yard swing pass with 18 seconds left in the first to go up 6-0. Troy answered back on an eight yard run from Ben Sherman and would take a 7-6 lead after Nick Stephani’s extra point split the uprights.

North Penn would counter with a 10 play, 75 yard drive keyed by a 30 yard completion from Burleigh to Zaparzynski. Burleigh would then take it in himself from 3 yards out, and his 2-point conversion pass put them back on top 14-7 with 4:33 left till half. Troy bounced right back to tie up the game at 14-14 as Chance Lantz found the end zone from three yards out.

North Penn got the ball back and scored 90 seconds later as Burleigh connected with Luke Kelly on a 55-yard strike with Kelly dragging a Troy defender the final five yards into the end zone. Brad Pequignot ran in the two-point try, and it was 22-14 North Penn with only 34 seconds left until half. Troy’s Diante Jones answered back on a 65 yard burst to get the Trojans trailing within two points at 22-20.

North Penn started the second half with a 61 yard touchdown from Burleigh to Zaparzynski that would put the Panthers up 30-20. Jones brought the Trojans back to within 30-26 at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter with a 31 yard scoring sprint one play after returning the ensuing kick 50 yards. The Panther series saw Burleigh connect with Kelly again for a 66 yard gain that would set up another Zaparzynski run to go back up, 36-26.

Troy again bounced back thanks to a short field on a 55 yard run by Jones to trail 36-33 until North Penn would ice the game Burleigh found Dayton Wood for a 24 yard score.

Burleigh threw for a record 405 yards and 4 touchdowns passes and Luke Kelly had six catches for 171 yards and a score. Diante Jones had 14 carries for 175 yards and two scores for Troy.

    Wellsboro 28, Bloomsburg 24

After getting knocked out the previous week against Troy with a shoulder injury, Wellsboro’s Michael Pietropola came off the sidelines for the final drive after Sophomore Quarterback Brandon Lamphier was sidelined to throw a game-winning 15 yard touchdown pass to Senior Kieron Smethers.

The Hornets found the end zone first on the night as Levi Mack ripped off a 52 yard run to go up 7-0 with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter following Jack Chambers‘ extra point. Bloomsburg would get on the scoreboard with 12 seconds remaining in the opening quarter as Sam Miller returned a Mack fumble for 64 yards. Wellsboro’s defense would block the extra point attempt to set the score at 7-6 Wellsboro.

The Hornets again traded offensive drives before the Lamphier found Smethers for a nine yard touchdown after Mack got the Hornets into the red zone after a 43 yard run. Following Chambers’ extra point with 1:27 remaining in the first half the Hornets led 14-6 at the half.

Bloomsburg came alive in the second half to score 18 unanswered points to eventually take the lead over Wellsboro. Quarterback Coty Kashner tied the game on a one yard run at 14-14 after a successful two-point conversion with 6:58 left in the third quarter. Bloomsburg took a 21-14 with 10:27 remaining in the game on a 34 yard pass from Kashner to Brandon Breisch. The Panthers added a 26 yard field goal with just over four minutes remaining to push their lead to 10 points before the Hornets got back into gear.

A 50 yard kick return up the Wellsboro sidelines by Marple energized the struggling Hornet offense as Lamphier threw his second touchdown pass, this one being a 36 yarder to Marple to bring the team within three points as the visiting team trailed 24-21 with 3:50 remaining. From that point on the Wellsboro defense came alive to force the Panthers to punt the ball back to Wellsboro for the final drive of the night.

The Hornets started at their own 25-yard line. Lamphier’s first down pass fell incomplete but the Sophomore gained 15 tough yards on second down to set the team up with a first down at the 40. Senior Dylan Widows caught an 11 yard Lamphier pass to give Wellsboro another first down before Lamphier would exit on the next play after getting sacked. Pietropola entered the game and connected with Smethers on a 42 yard pass to get the Hornets down to the Panthers’ 15-yard line before connecting with him for the game’s final touchdown with 57 seconds remaning to claim the 28-24 win.

Pietropola was 2-4 for 57 yards and one touchdown. Mack had his third 100 yard game as he put up 140 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Smethers caught five passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns and Marple caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Next week, the Hornets, 6-1 (1-1 NTL Division 1), take to the road for the final time in 2014 against Wyalusing.

The Rams would score again on their next drive as Justin Haley would complete the 53 yard touchdown pass to Jennings with 9:32 remaining in the game.

Athens would go for the winning score on the following drive. A key pass from Forbes to Lister set Athens up at the Wyalusing 27, which would soon prove to be good scoring position. A few plays later, and on third and fifteen, Forbes would complete another pass, this time to Bill Bennett, for the score with 5:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors led 45-0 at halftime, and would add another touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Bryce Cole would rattle off a 30 yard touchdown run to put Canton up 51-6 after Montgomery scored on a run by Montgomery quarterback Sergi Cole.

    Towanda 38, Central Columbia 28

The Black Knights were led by a trifecta of seniors offensively who accounted for all of the team’s offense on the night. Noah Huff ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries and also threw for 40. Fellow senior captain Steven Yates also went over the century mark on the ground, going for 101 while senior Dylan Bates ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns and also hauled in three of Huff’s seven completions on the evening.

The first half was back-and-forth with the game being tied at 21-21 at halftime. In the second half, Towanda received the opening kick and put together a 10 play, 64 yard drive that took over four minutes was capped by Bates’ second touchdown of the game to put Towanda up for good at 28-21.

Central had to punt on its ensuing drive and Towanda got a 27 yard return from Yates to set up their drive from the Central 27-yard line. Central stopped the Black Knights inside the 5 and Towanda settled for a 22-yard field goal by Tyler Basse to go up two scores, 31-21.

The Blue Jays answered back just before the end of the third quarter with a short drive capped by Koch’s second touchdown run of the night from 15 yards to cut the lead to three, 31-28.

From there, Towanda put together another 10-play drive but this one was stopped by Central when Williams intercepted Huff, giving Central the ball at its own 15. The Blue Jays then put together a near 5-minute drive that featured two outstanding catches by Williams, including one for 26 yards that was a simultaneous possession with the Towanda defensive back to set up Central at the Towanda 48. But from there, the drive stalled as Williams was dropped for a loss on a second down running play and then Shannon was sacked by a blitzing Kalob Benjamin on fourth down.

Rather than trying to run out the clock, with Central still having two timeouts remaining, Huff ended up getting loose up the middle for a 31-yard run for his third touchdown of the night to put the game away with just over two minutes left.

Towanda (5-2, 1-1 NTL Division 1) will now host Troy in week 8.

  • Hornets come from behind to beat Bloomsburg, 28-24

edweek72014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team scored 14 fourth quarter points to come back and defeat Bloomsburg 28-24 in the final minutes on Friday, October 10.

After getting injured the previous week, Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola came off the sidelines for the final drive after Sophomore Quarterback Brandon Lamphier was sidelined to throw a game-winning 15 yard touchdown pass to Senior Kieron Smethers.

“Brandon played a great football game tonight,” Pietropola said. “We wouldn’t have been in the situation if it wasn’t for Brandon and the guys. He played amazing all night and did what we needed him to do.”

Wellsboro skipper Matt Hildebrand was pleased with his team’s efforts on the night.

“I thought Brandon did a great job for us tonight and unfortunately on that last series he took a shot,” Hildebrand said. “We weren’t planning on playing Michael tonight but big-time players rise to the occasion and he got it done for us tonight on the last drive with Kieron.”

Lamphier, who made his first career Varsity start on the night, played well as he completed 9-of-19 passes for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns and pulled the Hornets to within three (24-21) before being knocked out of the game with a 36 yard touchdown pass to Senior Nick Marple to set the stage for the comeback.

Wellsboro started the game trading offensive possessions before Senior Running Back Levi Mack ripped off a 52 yard run to go up 7-0 with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter following Senior Jack Chambers’ extra point.

The second half belonged to Bloomsburg as they scored 18 unanswered points. After holding Wellsboro on their opening drive of the third quarter the Panthers went to work and converted a 37 yard pass on fourth-and-five and scored on a one yard run by Quarterback Coty Kashner to tie the game at 14-14 after a successful two-point conversion with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

Wellsboro’s next two offensive drives stalled out as Bloomsburg took the shift in momentum and took a 21-14 with 10:27 remaining in the game on a 34 yard pass from Kashner to Brandon Breisch.

“I wasn’t sure how Michael’s arm was feeling when he came in,” Smethers said. “I told him to trust in me when we got in the huddle and we connected on a couple (passes) and were able to score.”

“The last drive was very nerve-racking being down and Kieron came up big for us tonight. The offensive line were pushing guys around all game and Levi ran the ball like a man,” Pietropola continued.

Pietropola was 2-4 for 57 yards and one touchdown. Mack had his third 100 yard game as he put up 104 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Smethers caught five passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns and Marple caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Next week, the Hornets, 6-1 (1-1 NTL Division 1), take to the road for the final time in 2014 against Wyalusing.

“Wyalusing likes to play similar to Troy and have a great running attack. We’ll look to play a solid defensive game and hopefully get healthy as we make the final push for Districts,” Hildebrand concluded.

  • Hornets shut out by Troy on Homecoming

edweek62014For the first time in the last 16 regular season games, the Wellsboro Varsity Football team suffered a 17-0 loss to Troy during Homecoming.

Troy racked up 374 yards of total offense, 308 of which came on the ground, to Wellsboro’s 74 yards en route to the NTL Division 1 win which could ultimately decide this year’s league champion. Troy was very physical up front on both the offensive and defensive lines and shut down leading rusher Senior Levi Mack to only eight yards on the night. Prior to last night, Mack was averaging 10.3 yards a carry.

Wellsboro was able to move the ball on the Trojans defense, and did so on their opening drive. The Hornets put together a 13 play drive that started on their own 24-yard line. Aided by a pass interference penalty and a 45 yard completion to Senior Receiver Kieron Smethers from Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola, the Hornets marched down to the Troy one-yard line, but were kept out of the end zone on 4th-and-goal.

Troy then took over and mounted a long drive of their own before the Hornet defense held inside the red zone and forced Troy to turn the ball over on downs at the 5-yard line. Wellsboro’s ensuing drive stalled after seven plays and were forced to punt. Troy would not have much success on their next drive as Diante Jones fumlbed the ball away and Smethers returned it for 37 yards setting up Wellsboro at the Troy 47-yard line.

The Hornets would commit their first turnover of the night as Pietropola threw an interception on his last offensive play of the game before exiting on Troy’s following drive with an injury and would not return. The Wellsboro defense held and would get the ball back, but the wheels would begin to fall off for the home team.

“It hurts when you lose your starting quarterback and leader,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand. “It put a different wrinkle in our offense tonight. That’s not why we lost but it definitely played a role.”

After a run for loss by Senior Nick Levindoski and an incomplete pass by Sophomore Brandon Lamphier and a fumble, the Hornets were forced to punt the ball back to Troy, giving them excellent field position. Five short plays later, the Trojans took a 6-0 lead on a 5 yard run by Chance Lantz after the extra point failed with just 54 seconds remaining in the first half.

Troy received the second half kick and went back to work on the ground, putting together an eight play drive the would result in a 23 yard field goal to put Troy up 9-0. From that point on, the Hornets could not move the ball and Troy would score once more to claim the victory with 8:32 remaining in the game as Issac Havens punched the ball into the end zone from two yards out to take a 17-0 lead.

Pietropola was the Hornets’ leading passer on the night, going 2-10 for 55 yards and one interception. Lamphier completed 3 of 6 passes for 7 yards. Smethers caught 4 passes for 52 yards and Senior Dylan Widows caught one pass for 10 yards. Pietropola was the team’s leading rusher with 43 yards on 6 carries.

The loss drops the Hornets from the ranks of the unbeatens, and is the team’s first loss in the regular season since they lost 42-14 to Towanda on October 26, 2012. Now, the Hornets will take to the road to face Bloomsburg.

“It will be an interesting week,” Hildebrand continued. “Our guys haven’t been in the situation of coming off a loss and playing the following week. We can’t put our heads down after losing a game, we need to learn from our mistakes tonight and get better for next week.”

  • Hornet Football overcomes sloppy start to beat Athens

edweek52014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team scored 29 second-half points to beat the Athens Wildcats 41-0 on Friday, September 26.

After two weeks of scoring 50 plus points in the first half of games, the Hornets were held to 12 first half points due to turnovers and penalties. Both Athens and Wellsboro were flagged for 16 penalties in the first half, and the Hornets were penalized 15 times for 135 yards during the game.

“We made some big mistakes in the first quarter that hurt us offensively,” stated head coach Matt Hildebrand.

Despite the penalties, Wellsboro started off quick as Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola threw a slant to Senior Receiver Kieron Smethers that turned into an 84 yard touchdown to put Hornets up 6-0 just 20 seconds into the game.

Wellsboro’s defense forced Athens to a three-and-out and Pietropola again guided Wellsboro down the field, aided by two pass interference calls against the Wildcats, but Tyler Forbes ended the threat with an interception, Pietropola’s first of the season, in the end zone.

Athens put together a long drive, but Senior Dylan Widows intercepted a pass in the end zone that ended their threat. Wellsboro could not get anything going on their next drive as they were hit with the penalty bug focing them to punt. Athens again put together a long drive, and found themselves inside the Green Hornets’ 10-yard line, but the Wellsboro defense forced a fumble and recovered.

“Our defense was dominate the whole game,” continued Hildebrand.

Athens would mount a third drive after forcing a Wellsboro fumble, but turned the ball over on downs at the Wellsboro 11-yard line.

From there, Senior Running Back Levi Mack took over and busted off a 60 yard run to the Athens 29-yard line. Five plays later, Pietropola scrambled in from 8 yards out to push the lead to 12-0 with 3:01 left in the half.

In the second half, the game belonged to Wellsboro as Mack went back to work and ripped off a 64 yard touchdown run on Wellsboro’s first offensive play to make it 18-0 with 8:45 left in the third quarter. Following an interception by Junior Anthony Cooper on Athens’ first play following the ensuing kickoff, Mack ran for 16 yards, then Pietropola scrambled and broke loose on a 55 yard touchdown run. Pietropola then hooked up with Cooper on a conversion pass to make it 26-0 with 7:02 left in the third quarter.

The Green Hornets tacked on another third quarter touchdown when Smethers raced under a Pietropola bomb for a 72 yard touchdown. Pietropola ran in the two-conversion to make it 34-0. Wellsboro added a fourth quarter touchdown on a 2 yard touchdown run by Mack that was set up by a bad punt snap by the Wildcats that resulted in a 36 yard loss to the their two-yard line.

Wellsboro piled up 580 yards in total offense for the game. Pietropola completed 7-of-18 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 90 rushing yards and scored twice on seven carries. Mack rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and Smethers hauled in three receptions, including two for touchdowns and 161 yards.

“The second half the kids did a great job making adjustments and limiting penalties,” Hildebrand concluded. “I was happy to see how we responded to adversity, and Levi did a great job running tonight.”

The Hornets, now 5-0 (1-0 NTL Division 1), will take on Troy on Friday, October 3 for Homecoming.

  • Hornets roll Sayre, 63-0

edweek42014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team scored 50 first half points en route to a 63-0 blow out of Sayre on Friday, September 19.

Things looked good for Sayre as they opened the game with an eight-play drive that chewed up half of the first quarter, but the wheels would soon come off as the Hornets quickly went to work following a 40 yard punt return by Senior Nick Marple to set the Hornets up at the 50-yard line. Three plays and one penalty later, Senior Levi Mack bounced off numerous Redskin defenders on his way to a 20 yard run. Following the extra point by Senior Jack Chambers, the Hornets led 7-0.

The Hornet defense forced a fumble on Sayre’s next drive to take the ball back deep in Sayre territory. The Hornets only needed two plays, a 13 yard pass from Senior Michael Pietropola to Senior Dylan Widows and a 15 yard run by Pietropola, to take a 13-0 lead with 2:26 remaining in the opening frame.

The Hornets would add one more score in the first quarter. After an interception by Senior Trystan Wheatley on a botched punt attempt, Pietropola and the offense went back to work. Pietropola connected with Widows for 18 yards and then hit Marple on a 22 yard strike in the end zone to take a 20-0 lead following Chambers’ extra point.

Following another failed Sayre drive, Wellsboro this time put together a nine play drive the culminated with Senior Receiver Kieron Smethers hauling in his first of two touchdowns on the night for 14 yards. The extra point pushed the Hornets’ lead to 27-0 with 8:06 left in the second quarter.

Sayre was able to move the ball on their next drive and got into Wellsboro territory before Senior Defensive Lineman Ben Davis stepped in front of a screen pass and raced 55 yards to the end zone to put the Hornets up 34-0. Wellsboro would score three more times to round out the quarter. The first of the remaining scores was a safety stemming from Sayre’s James Harbst kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone after a bad snap on a punt. Smethers caught his second touchdown, this reception for one yard, to go up 43-0, and Mack scored his second touchdown as time expired to give the Hornets the 50-0 lead going into the half.

The Hornets received the second half kick and put together an eight play drive on the ground as Mack finished the hat trick at the 6:52 mark of the third quarter from one yard out to put Wellsboro up 57-0. Wellsboro would scored once more to start the fourth quarter as Senior Nick Levindoski scored from 10 yards out to push the score to 63-0 with 11:53 remaining in the game.

Pietropola finished the game at 11-15 for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. The Senior signal caller has now thrown for 941 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year and is 71 yards shy of the 5,000 yards in his career. Mack led all rushers on the night with 16 carries for 102 yards and three touchdowns for his first 100-yard game of the year and second of his career.

“The big boys up front did an outstanding job tonight,” said Mack. “It was amazing. We came out ready to go tonight and just flew around on both sides of the ball.”

Marple led the receiving corps with five catches for 130 yards to bring his total to 562 yards for the season. Widows caught two passes for 31 yards, Levindoski had one for 38, and Smethers caught three for 27.

Defensively, Junior Linebacker Nick Tremper had 10 tackles to lead the team. Senior Michael Brostrom recorded 7 tackles on the night, forced a fumble and recovered two.

The defense only allowed 82 yards of total offense on the night which pleased head coach Matt Hildebrand.

“It starts up front with our defensive line,” Hildebrand said. “Those guys have been incredibly strong this season and makes it tough for teams to get past them. We’ve had a lot of guys step in at our linebacker spots to try and find the best combination and those guys are stepping up and our secondary has done an outstanding job with coverage to this point.”

The Hornets have only allowed six points to date the season and have shut out opponents the other three games.

“When you shut teams out you’re going to win football games, and that’s something I’m very proud of our defense for doing,” concluded Hildebrand.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 4-0 and will take on NTL Division 1 rival Athens on the road next Friday, September 26.

Towanda Quarterback Noah Huff also returned to form as he ran for two touchdowns and threw for two. Steven Yates, Dylan Bates, Keegan Kisner also scored for Towanda.

Bloomsburg’s first of two scores came on a 21 yard pass from Nick Anderson to Brandon Breisch. The Panthers’ second score. Next week Towanda travels to Hughesville and will look to even up their record.

    Muncy 13, Cowanesque Valley 8

Cowanesque jumped out on Muncy early in the game as their second play from scrimmage would result in their only points of the ball game. Ethan Mead raced 58 yards to the end zone. From that point on, the game turned into a defensive battle and Cowanesque retained a 6-0 lead going into the half.

After each team exchanged four-and-outs to start the third quarter, Muncy would force another punt out of Cowanesque valley and head to work on offense.

Nixon would get things rolling for Muncy as he busted off his longest run of the evening with a 43-yard gain. He would follow that up with an 18 yard burst and put his team in great field position with an opportunity to tie the game.

Muncy would do just that as Manuel Ramos took a delayed handoff up the middle 15 yards for a touchdown. Muncy would attempt the two-point conversion to go up by two points but failed to convert. In the fourth quarter, Muncy forced three turnovers and eventually the put together a long drive to win the game.

Jeffrey Fry led the way for Muncy as the sophomore quarterback threw for 132 yards and the game winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He went 9-15 on the night throwing the football.

    Warrior Run 19, Wyalusing 13

The Rams fell from the ranks of the unbeatens as Warrior Run was able to control the Rams’ dynamic ground game. Wyalusing’s Luke Jennings had 115 yards on 20 carries for the Rams and Otis had 47 yards on 11 carries.

Warrior Run struck first in the second quarter when Jake Rohm caught an 11-yard touchdown from Frank James. James hit the extra point and it was 7-0. In the third quarter William Michael scored on a 28-yard touchdown and after the kick failed Warrior Run was up 13-0.

North Penn hosts Athens in week four as they look to stay undefeated.

    Wellsboro 71, Bucktail 6

It took the Green Hornets only three minutes to score on the winless Bucks. After a long pass to Nick Marple, Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola connected with Senior Nick Levindoski for three yards to put Wellsboro up 7-0 following Senior Jack Chambers‘ extra point attempt. Wellsboro’s next scoring drive saw the return of Senior Kieron Smethers for a 10 yard strike. Smethers would also score defensively for the Hornets as he sacked Bucktails’ quarterback, forced a fumble, and returned it 15 yards for the score. After a defensive safety by Junior Anthony Cooper, the Hornets were up 23-0 with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter.

Wellsboro’s next score came from Senior Running Back Levi Mack from 44 yards out. Smethers caught a 48 yard strike from Pietropola shortly after to put Wellsboro up 37-0 at the end of the first quarter. Marple got involved in the scoring parade as he caught an 80 yard pass from Pietropola following another Mack run to go up 51-0. The first half ended as Levindoski punched the ball in from one yard out to take a 57-0 lead at the half.

With Wellsboro’s starters getting a break in the second half, Sophomore Quarterback Brandon Lamphier scored twice on read options to put Wellsboro for the final two Hornet touchdowns. • Hornet Football downs Bucktail, 71-6

edweek32014The Wellsboro Varsity Football team scored 71 points, the most they have scored since beating CMVT 70-0 in 1995, as they defeated Bucktail on Friday, September 12.

The Hornets scored early and often. Their first score came at 9:15 in the first quarter after the Hornet defense stopped the Bucks on fourth down. Two plays later, Senior Quaterback Michael Pietropola found Senior Nick Levindoski wide open in the end zone for a three yard score after connecting on a 63 yard pass to Senior Nick Marple one play earlier. Senior Jack Chambers’ kick was good and the Hornets were on top, 7-0.

Three minutes later, Pietropola connected with Senior Receiver Kieron Smethers for a 10 yard strike to put Wellsboro up 14-0 following Chambers second extra point of the night. Smethers would score less than 20 seconds later as he sacked Bucktail’s Keifer Masson, stripped the ball, and raced 15 yards to the end zone to put Wellsboro up 21-0. The Hornets would extend their lead to 23-0 two minutes later as Junior Anthony Cooper tackled Aaron Ransdorf in the end zone for a safety.

After the free kick, Senior Levi Mack got in on the action as he scampered 44 yards to put the Hornets up 30-0 with 3:31 left in the first quarter. Wellsboro scored once more in the quarter as Pietropola connected with Smethers for a 48 yard score go up 37-0.

Wellsboro wasted little time scoring in the second quarter. After runs of 33 and 3 yards by Levindoski and a 14 yard pass to Cooper, Mack scored from 10 yards out to put the Hornets up 44-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Hornets didn’t score again until after their previous drive stalled on a Mack fumble. This time, Pietropola connected with Marple on an 80 yard bomb to put the Hornets up 51-0. Wellsboro would score once more in the first half as Levindoski punched the ball in from one yard out to go up 57-0 to close the half.

The second half saw many of Wellsboro’s JV players get reps. Following a 62 yard run by Ransdorf to prevent the shut out, Sophomore Quarterback Brandon Lamphier called his own number on the option and raced 24 yards for a touchdown to go up 64-6. Lamphier scored once more, this time from 50 yards out, to make the final score 71-6, Wellsboro.

“I’m happy that we executed well tonight in the fact that we didn’t make the mistakes that we had the first two weeks and cleaned up a lot of the things we’ve been working on in practice,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand.

Wellsboro allowed their first points on the 2014 season, coming off a couple of missed tackles but Hildebrand was still impressed with how the team played.

“Our defense has been a staple for us all year,” the head ball coach said. “Our starters have yet to give up a score and gave up few, if any, yards tonight.”

In the first half the Hornets held Bucktail to -47 yards of total offense. Bucktail would move into the positive side in the second half as they finished with 43 yards of offense for the game.

Pietropola had another solid night as he completed 8-9 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Pietropola has now thrown for over 200 yards in his last five games dating back to North Penn in 2013.

“The offense was very powerful tonight,” Pietropola said. “Bucktail played a pretty good game defensively. They flew around and made some plays but our offensive line pushed hard all night. Levi ran the ball hard and the receivers made a lot of stellar catches so it was just an all-around good effort.”

Marple also continued his streak of 100+ yard receiving games as his two catches totaled 143 yards. Smethers caught three passes for 67 yards.

Mack was the leading ball carrier on the night as he rushed 7 times for 88 yards. Lamphier totaled 74 yards on his only two carries.

With the win, Wellsboro improves to 3-0 on the year and will get ready for Sayre at home in week four.

“Each week we tell the kids that we have to keep improving and get better every week,” Hildebrand continued. “It doesn’t matter who we play, just as long as we get better. We’ll break down the film this weekend to see what we did good and what we need to work on and see what Sayre has.”

“Next week should definitely be a good game against Sayre,” continued Pietropola. “They’re a good team and we need to continue to get better in practice. We can’t take any days off and just get better as we prepare for big games.”

Pietropola connected with Anthony Cooper, Nick Levindoski, and Nick Marple on passes of 20 yards, 65 yards, and 27 yards. Jack Chambers also made hist first field goal attempt of the year from 33 yards out to cap off the Hornet scoring.

  • Hornets blank Muncy, 31-0

edweek22014For the second consecutive week, the Wellsboro Varsity Football team pitched a shut out to improve to 2-0 on the 2014 season.

This week, the Muncy Indians fell prey to the Hornets’ stingy defense.

“It all starts with our defensive line,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand. “So far they’ve brought a lot of pressure which makes it hard for teams to throw or run on us.”

One of the reason Muncy couldn’t produce any points was the play of Junior Linebacker Nick Tremper, Junior Defensive Back Anthony Cooper, and Senior Defensive Back Nick Marple. Tremper recorded 15 tackles on the night and even went airborne on one play trying to get to Muncy’s quarterback. Marple recorded seven tackles, all solos, and caught an interception in the end zone on Muncy’s final drive to preserve the shut out. Cooper was also all over the field as he made nine stops on the night.

The Hornets struck first in the game after taking the opening kickoff. They put together a seven play drive as Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola called his own number from the three-yard line to put the Hornets up 7-0 following the extra point by Senior Jack Chambers.

After the Wellsboro defense stopped Muncy on fourth down, the Hornets offense went back to work. This time Pietropola found Cooper in traffic for a 20 yard strike to put Wellsboro up 14-0.

Muncy couldn’t get anything going on offense and were forced to punt the ball away to Wellsboro again. This time, Wellsboro put together a 10 play drive that resulted in a 33 yard Chambers field goal with 11:01 remaining in the first half.

Wellsboro would strike once more in the half as Pietropola connected with Senior Running Back Nick Levindoski on the 65 yard bomb to put Wellsboro up 24-0.

The second half saw Wellsboro take primarily to the ground game and the second string offense getting some playing time. The first string scored once more on the night as Pietropola connected with Marple for a 27 yard strike to take a 31-0 lead with 5:57 remaining in the third quarter.

From there on out, Muncy tried to put a comeback together, and gained some momentum towards the end of the game, but Marple stepped in front of a pass in the end zone to eliminate the threat.

Pietropola went 10-19 through the air for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Levi Mack rushed for 50 yards on nine carries, and Marple caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.

For Marple, he’s caught 13 passes for 289 on the year, more than he has caught his entire career, which has drawn praise from the head ball coach.

“The last few years Nick hasn’t had to play the receiver role very much, but you can obviously see what he can do,” said Hildebrand. “He’s a very talented kid who works very hard.”

Pietropola has now thrown for 481 yards and five touchdowns in the first two games of the season, giving him 4,469 yards and 50 touchdowns for his career.

Next week, the Hornets travel to Bucktail for a 7:00 p.m. game.

  • Hornet football notches 48-0 win over CV

wellsboroThe Wellsboro football team picked up where they left off following the 2013 season with a 48-0 shut out win against Cowanesque Valley Friday night in Westfield.

The Hornets started out on defense and forced CV to punt in only a handful of plays. Following a Cowanesque punt, the Hornet offense only needed three plays to find the end zone for the first time in 2014. Senior Quarterback Michael Pietropola found Senior Nick Marple for 46 yards and following a three yard run by Senior Levi Mack, Pietropola found Marple again, this time for 25 yards and the touchdown. Senior Jack Chambers’ kick was off the mark and the Hornets took a 6-0 with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Following the kick, Cowanesque put together an eight play drive but failed to convert a fourth down giving Wellsboro excellent field position. Pietropola and Mack drove the Hornets down to the two-yard line before Pietropola threw his second touchdown, this time to Senior Dylan Widows. Chambers connected on the extra point to give the Hornets a 13-0 lead.

On the following drive, the Hornet defense got into the scoring mix as Seniors Ben Davis and Michael Brostrom combined for a safety to put the Hornets up 15-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Later in the quarter, Junior Owen Covert returned a punt that hit a CV offensive lineman for a two yard return to put the Hornets up 21-0 after a high snap on the extra point.

The Hornets ended the first half with a four yard touchdown by Senior Nick Levindoski and a two yard run by Mack to take a 35-0 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw no scoring for Wellsboro, but instead saw a stalled drive. Wellsboro took the second half kick and put together a seven play drive only to fumble the ball away inside the red zone. The team quickly rebounded in the beginning of the fourth quarter as Pietropola called his own number and rushed nine yards to pay dirt to put the Hornets up 42-0. Wellsboro would score once more on the night, as Junior Nick Tremper pushed the pile forward for a one yard run to go up 48-0.

“We definitely have things to work on,” said head coach Matt Hildebrand. “Things we didn’t see in scrimmages. Always something to work on.”

One of those things Hildebrand mentioned was turnovers.

“We turnoved the ball over twice in the red zone and we need to clean that up going forward.”

The Hornets amassed over 400 yards of total offense which Hildebrand was pleased with.

“We moved the ball well and some of our younger guys stepped in later on in the game when we need them to. I thought our offensive line did a good job handling their assingments, but we definitely have things to work on in practice this week as we prepare for Muncy.”

Pietropola finished the night going 15-16 through the air for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Mack was the leading rusher with 88 yards on eight carries and a touchdown, and Marple caught 8 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Junior Anthony Cooper and Davis each had eight tackles and Levindoski added seven. Tremper recorded 1 interception and returned it for 24 yards, and Brostrom and Davis each had sacks on the night.

With the win, the Hornets start the season 1-0. The team will be back in action on Friday, September 5 as they host Muncy.
