  • Crestwood’s valiant effort falls short in Dawgtown

    frankweek112013Berwick prevails in 14-13 nailbitter

BERWICK- It was round one of the PIAA District II playoffs this Saturday afternoon at Crispin Field in Berwick as the Dawgs played host to the Crestwood Comets. It would be a rematch of opening night of the regular season as the Dawgs rolled by the Comets 41-7 just 11 weeks ago at Crispin Field. The Comets had other ideas coming in this time. Upset was on their minds and they nearly got it done, falling short 14-13 with a missed extra point looming large.

Crestwood would take the lead at the 4:56 mark of the 1st quarter with Jr. RB Frank Aigeldinger ripping off a 53 yard dash to paydirt. The PAT was no good, with the score Comets 6, Dawgs 0.

Berwick would grab the lead late in the 2nd quarter with Sr. WR Kyle Trenholm hauling in a 51 yard TD strike from Sr. QB CJ Curry. Jr. K Olivia Seely nailed the PAT and the Dawgs held the slim 7-6 lead at the half.

Crestwood would again grab the lead in the 3rd quarter with Aigeldinger capping a seven play 89 yard scoring drive on a seven yard scamper to the goldzone. The PAT was good with the score Comets 13, Dawgs 7.

Berwick would take the lead for good with just 7:27 left in the ballgame with Sr. RB Dain Kowalski capping a six play 80 yard scoring drive on a 19 yard dash to paydirt. Seely again nailed thePAT with the score Dawgs 14, Comets 13.

Crestwood would not go away quietly as they scrapped and clawed their way down into Berwick territory with time ticking away, but came up short on an incomplete pass on fourth down. The Dawgs would take over on downs salting the win away and advancing to round two of the District II playoffs were they will host Abington Heights next Saturday afternoon at Crispin Field. No matter if the Dawgs win or lose next Saturday it will be their last home game of the 2013 campaign.

Berwick certainly did not play their best game of the season in this one. Many may say it might have been their ugliest win of the year, but fortunately the PIAA does not give out style points and a win is a win.

“I did not like our body language today”, noted Coach Curry. “We didn’t play with enough emotion and that’s how you have to play each week if you want to be a winner. Still, it was a great game and we will move on”.

“We were prepared for them, but we played flat most of the game, at least we turned it up in the 4th quarter. We will just put this one behind us and look toward next weekend, said QB CJ Curry after the game.

If you look at the stats in this one it was pretty lopsided except for the scoreboard as Crestwood rolled up a total of 308 total yards to Berwick’s 164 total yards. Crestwood would rush for 204 yards on 47 carries to Berwick’s 23 yards rushing on 18 carries. In the passing game it was Berwick getting the upper hand with 141 yards to Crestwood’s 104 yards via the air.

  • Berwick remains unbeaten, overwhelm Coughlin 39-7

frankweek92013Dawgs still sitting as number 1 seed in District 2 AAA

BERWICK- The Berwick Bulldogs played host to the Coughlin Crusaders Friday night at Crispin Field, in a game with big playoff implications. Coughlin came in with a 7-1 record and is battling with Crestwood for what may be the final playoff spot in the District 2 class AAA playoffs. Berwick, on the other hand, is looking to lock up the number one seed and secure home field for its first two playoff games.

The Dawgs would have to fend off a scrappy Coughlin team which held a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but rattled off 36 unanswered points the rest of the way dismantling the Crusaders 39-7.

Berwick’s first score came in the form of a 27 yard field goal off the foot of Jr. K Olivia Seely.  Then, down 7-3 Sr. Kyle Trenholm returned a punt 56 yards to the Coughlin 29, which got things rolling for the Dawgs. Five plays later Sr. QB CJ Curry found paydirt from one yard out. After a penalty the Dawgs went for two in which Sr. FB Jorden Stout rushed in and the Dawgs took the 11-7 lead, never looking back.

Trenholm, who you could give the game ball to in this one, again found paydirt on a reverse option with just seven seconds left in the half, as Berwick held an 18-7 lead at the break.

Sr. TE Ian Mazonkey got in on the scoring at the 7:40 mark of the 2nd quarter hauling in a 17 yard TD reception from Curry. Trenholm, then again scored, this time a 41 yard TD reception from Curry early in the 4th quarter. Trenholm capped the scoring on the night, giving the Dawgs the 39-7 victory and tallying his third touchdown.

With the win, the Dawgs move to 9-0 and have an away game at Hazleton Area next week. A win there and the Dawgs will secure the top playoff seed and will also claim the WVC title. As for Coughlin, they will have a showdown with Crestwood next week. As it looks right now the winner of that game will secure a District 2 playoff spot and the loser may have to settle for Eastern Conference playoffs.

Looking ahead…thinking playoffs?? Let’s give it a whirl….here is how I see it right now, for whatever that’s worth? If you’re a Berwick fan, well, I’d say things look pretty good. Should get the number one seed and that means home field for game one, which may be Crestwood. District 2 title game could be Scranton Prep coming to Dawgtown, for what I think, would be the first time ever. After districts, state playoffs look like this. D2 champ gets D11 champ in third playoff game, which looks like Southern Lehigh this season. From there….could be Clearfield, whom may be district 9 champ. If the Dawgs were to get by all those teams, Archbishop Wood could be huge challenge in Eastern Finals. Bishop McDevitt and Mannheim Central will be battling it out in the West so the Dawgs would not see them unless they were in state title game.

Ya, I know crazy scenario dreamed up in week 9…thinking ahead…or just plain crazy. Hey, look at it this way. Of the six teams ranked above Berwick in the state, only one of them is in the eastern side of the bracket.

  • No letdown in Dawgtown, Berwick blanks Selinsgrove

Dawgs start fast in route to 36-0 win over Seals

    By Frank Kastreva, Berwickdawgs.com

BERWICK- It could have been a game that the Dawgs had a bit of a letdown after the huge win over Valley West last week. Selinsgrove pretty much put those worries to rest for the Dawgs after fumbling on their second play from scrimmage, in which the Dawgs turned into paydirt. Then fumbling away the ensuing kickoff, in which the Dawgs again found the goldzone. Then on their third play from scrimmage and interception, in which again Berwick turned into points with a 25 yard TD return. With only three plays ran from scrimmage for the Seals they already found themselves down 22-0 against a very good Berwick team, which spelled trouble for the Seals.

Sr. LB AJ Vandermark was the first to score for the Dawgs on a fumble recovered in the air and returned 11 yards to paydirt. Sr. RB Dain Kowalski capped a short three play drive on a 14 yard scamper after the Seals fumbled on the kickoff. Sr. Tanner Weaver returned the next turnover in the form of a 25 yard interception return and with just over five minutes played Berwick held the 22-0 lead.

The Dawgs would find the scoreboard later in the 2nd quarter with Kowalski capping a five play 75 yard scoring drive on a 13 yard scamper. Jr. K Olivia Seely nailed the PAT, with the score Dawgs 29, Seals 0.

Berwick’s next score came in the form of a QB keeper by Sr. CJ Curry capping a five play 65 yard scoring drive. Seely, again nailed the PAT, with the score Dawgs 36, Seals 0.

The second half would start in the mercy rule, with a continuous clock running except for turnover on downs and any scoring that may occur.

As for scoring in the second half, there simple was none and with the clock moving continuously the Dawgs could salt the win away rather quickly, with the final score Dawgs 36, Seals 0.

Berwick’s win did come with a cost tonight as Jr. RB Nate Maczuga was lost for the season with a broken arm on just his second carry of the game.

The Dawgs would finish with a total of 386 yards compared to the Seals 183 total yards. Berwick would rush for 278 total yards on 48 carries, with the bulk of the load coming from Kowalski whom finished up with 107 yards on 12 carries, all of which came in the 1st half. Also cashing in on the ground game was Curry with 16 yards, Maczuga with 3 yards, Sr. FB Jordan Stout with 62 yards, Jr. Nick Talanca with 52 yards and So. Daquan Hellenthal with 22 yards. Curry would finish up with seven completions on 10 attempts for 108 yards passing.

Berwick tallied 22 first downs to Selinsgrove’s 12. The Seals would finish with 152 yards rushing on 35 carries and just 31 yards via the air.

“We got off to a fast start tonight, but we still had some missed opportunities. I can’t say I was really pleased with the protection in our passing game, but we will take the win and move on,” said Coach Curry in his postgame interview.

With the win, Berwick moves to 5-0 and will hit the road the next two weeks as the Dawgs travel to Tunkhannock and then Williamsport.

    Until then Happy Football!

  • Streak snapped, Dawgs down Spartans 42-28

Berwick uses second half to surge by rival Valley West

    By Frank Kastreva, Berwickdawgs.com

BERWICK- Coming into tonight’s game between Valley West and Berwick not one player on the Spartan’s sideline had suffered the experience of defeat by the Berwick Bulldogs, winning the last four tilts against the Dawgs. That all change tonight at Crispin field as the Berwick Bulldogs broke the streak to the tune of 42-28 in a most entertaining ballgame.

Things did not start well for the Dawgs in this one, fumbling the pigskin away on only their third play from scrimmage. Valley West would capitalize on the Dawg’s miscue going 39 yards on five plays with Jr. RB Eric Acosta capping the drive on a 20 yard scamper. Jr. K Ian Ultsh would nail the PAT and the Spartans had the early 7-0 lead.

The Dawgs answered right back on their ensuing possession going 51 yards on nine plays with Jr. RB Nate Maczuga capping things off on a 13 yard scamper. Jr. K Olivia Seely nailed the PAT, with the score Dawgs 7, Spartans 7.

Berwick would take the lead on their very next drive after a three and out by the defense. Sr. QB C.J Curry capped the 49 yard scoring drive on a two yard jaunt. Seely’s PAT was no good, with the score Dawgs 13, Spartans 7.

Valley West again answered back on their next series putting together a 65 yard scoring drive using 12 plays to find paydirt. Capping the drive that extended into the 2nd quarter was Sr. RB Troy Yashinski on a 20 yard scamper. Ultsh nailed the PAT, with the score Spartans 14, Dawgs 13.

Just like a big prize fight, the Dawgs again fought back with another scoring drive on their very next series. This time going 61 yards on 11 plays with Sr. FB Jorden Stout capping things off on a nine yard jaunt. Berwick would go for two successfully with Maczuga finding the goldzone via the ground, with the score Dawgs 21, Spartans 14.

Valley West looked like they would again answer back before the end of the half, but fumbled the pigskin away on the one yard line after a 43 yard reception. The Dawgs Sr. DB Andrew Wenner would recover the ball in the endzone and the half would end with the score Dawgs 21, Spartans 14.

The Spartans would tie things up with 6:05 left in the 3rd quarter after an interception from Sr. Michael Baur. Five plays later the Spartans would find paydirt on a 20 yard reception from Baur to So. TE L.J. Wesneski.  The PAT was good, with the score Dawgs 21, Spartans 21.

Berwick answered right back taking the lead for good with Maczuga ripping off a 31 yard scamper to the goldzone. The PAT was good, with the score Dawgs 28, Spartans 21.

Berwick’s Sr. RB Dain Kowalski was the next to find paydirt for the Dawgs, capping a 53 yard scoring drive on a three yard jaunt. Seely nailed the PAT, with the score Dawgs 35, Spartans 21.

The Dawgs would salt things away after a fumble recovery by Sr. LB Ian Mazonkey, due to the hit by Sr. DL Jordan Stout. Seven plays later Kowalski ripped off a 20 yard scamper capping the 61 yard scoring drive, with the score Dawgs 42, Spartans 21.

Valley West would find the endzone one last time on the night with Acosta rushing it in from nine yards out, with the final score Dawgs 42, Spartans 28.

Berwick would finish with 380 total yards offense compared to the Spartan’s 303 yards. The Dawgs would rush for 254 yards on 42 carries with Maczuga getting 75 yards, Kowalski with 65 yards, Trenholm with 28 yards, Talanca with 16 yards and Stout with 49 yards. Curry would finish with 126 yards passing.

Jr. RB Nate Maczuga before tonight’s game only had five carries in the first three games compared to most of the workload on the ground tonight.

“I really did not know I would get the ball as much as I did tonight, I’m glad I could contribute. I love getting out there and playing,” said Maczuga.

As for Sr. QB Curry he was all smiles after the game. “This is just awesome, words can’t describe how great this feels right now. I’m going to enjoy this win for tonight, then get back in the weight room tomorrow morning and start thinking about Selinsgrove.”

Selinsgrove will be the Dawgs next test as they host the Seals next Friday night at Crispin Field. Selinsgrove will come in with a 3-1 record and always plays Berwick tough. It should be another great test for the Dawgs as they look to move to 5-0 on their quest for Hershey gold.

    Until next week…happy football!

  • Dawgs KO Tide

frankweek22013Berwick’s offense puts up 56, while defense plays stingy

    By Frank Kastreva, Berwickdawgs.com

Berwick made a little bit of history Friday night as they traveled to Pottsville in a non-league match-up. A bit of history that the Crimson Tide might want to forget about. In a series that started in 1930 with Berwick heading into tonight’s tilt with a 28-11-3 record, the Dawgs put up 56. It would be the most points  tallied by the Dawgs against the Tide ever in the series and also the largest margin win, with the final score Dawgs 56, Tide 7. In 1997 Berwick won by a 54-7 margin, which was the biggest point margin win prior to tonight’s 56-7 win.

Berwick  would carry a 35-0 lead in at half time with a total of 297 yards, compared to 43 total yards offense for the Tide. The Dawgs 297 came from 105 yards via the ground game and 192 yards via the air, while Pottsville had a total of minus 24 on the ground and positive 67 in the air. Mind you, it was only half time.

The Dawg’s would get touchdowns from Sr. RB Dain Kowalski, Sr. WR Kyle Trenholm and Sr. FB Jordan Stout in the first half. Kowalski scored Berwick’s first three td’s on a one yard jaunt, a two yard jaunt and a six yard scamper to paydirt. Trenholm scored on a 66 yard reception from Sr. QB CJ Curry and Stout found the goldzone on a four yard rush.

Scoring for the Dawgs in the 2nd half were, Jr. WR Andrew Force, Jr. RB Nick Talanca and So. RB Daquan Hellenthal. Force got in on a 43 yard strike from Curry, Talanca on a 2 yard jaunt and Hellenthal  on another 2 yard rush.

QB Curry and the first team would come out of the game late in the 3rd quarter with a 42-7 lead. Curry would finish up with 254 yards passing with eight completions on 15 attempts.

With the win the Dawgs have improved to 2-0 while the Tide moves to 1-1. Berwick will again be on the road next week as they travel to the Back Mountain for a Saturday matinee with the Dallas Mountaineers.

    Until next week, happy football!

  • Dawg gone impressive opener

Berwick storms past Comets in opener at Crispin Field

    By Frank Kastreva, Berwickdawgs.com

It was opening night at Crispin Field in Dawgtown Friday, as the Berwick Bulldogs kicked off the 2013 gridiron campaign. Back were the white helmets, silver paints and Berwick blue jersey’s once worn by the likes of Orlando, Powlus, Bennett, Henry and Felder just to name a few of the many whom laid it all on the line at Crispin Field. “The field where the football gods sleep” to quote a few.

Both teams would get off to a slow start, but after the Dawgs broke through on the second play from scrimmage in the 2nd quarter they would never look back. Berwick would roll out to a 35-0 lead late in the 3rd quarter to take it into the mercy rule, with the final score Dawgs 41, Comets 7.

Berwick first touchdown would come on a 39 yard strike from Sr. QB CJ Curry to Jr. WR Andrew Force. Force would add two more td’s on the night finishing up with five catches for 192 yards. To date, Force as 11 career catches and nine of them are touchdowns.

Sr. WR Will Updegrove would also have a nice night finishing up with three catches for 87 yards with one touchdown.

Berwick would tally up a total of 468 total yards from scrimmage with 132 yards on the ground and the rest from the Curry air attack. Curry finished up with 14 receptions on 26 attempts for 336 yards passing with one interception.

The Dawgs’ other two scores would come from Sr. RB Dain Kowalski on a seven yard scamper and Sr. DB Alex Klinger on a 25 yard fumble recovery which led to paydirt.

Crestwood would find the scoreboard in the 4th quarter on a 50 yard scamper to spoil the shutout.

“We got off to a slow start, but once the kids got the momentum going they played well. Our defense did a good job shutting them down tonight. Football is a game of angles and matchups, tonight we were able to get both,” said Coach Curry of his Dawgs.

With the win Berwick, gets off to the 1-0 start and will travel to rival Pottsville next Friday night. Pottsville also got a win tonight putting up 40 some points, so look for a dandy next week. Both teams are not very fond of one another, in other words they are not on each other’s Christmas card list.

    Until next week…Happy Football!

  • Abington Heights wins slugfest

Comets draw curtain on Dawgs’ season with 44-35 victory

BERWICK- The Abington Heights Comets came into the district 2 class AAA championship without finding the goldzone in their last eight quarters. They made up for things a bit at Crispin Field Saturday afternoon finding paydirt a total of six times for 44 points with a 42 yard field goal to boot. The Comets would end Berwick’s season with the 44-35 victory and advance to the PIAA state tournament in which they will square off against district 11 champions Allentown Central Catholic.

Berwick would grab the early lead scoring on their first series with Sr. RB Jeff Steeber capping a three play drive on the jet sweep left scampering 74 yards to paydirt. So. K Olivia Seely would nail the PAT, with the score Dawgs 7, Comets 0.

Berwick’s Sr. RB Matt Cashman would get in the action on the very next play of the game returning  the kickoff from Abington Heights 98 yards to the goldzone and Berwick would regain the lead after Seely’s PAT, with the score Dawgs 14, Comets 7.

The Comets would answer right back on their next series on a five play drive that covered 49 yards with Sr. RB Ryan Judge capping things off on a six yard jaunt to paydirt. Patrick would boot the PAT, with the score Dawgs 14, Comets 14.

There would be no more scoring until the 3:20 mark of the 2nd quarter. The Comets would take their first lead with Sr. TE Pat Williams capping a seven play drive that covered 65 yards on a delayed screen going 22 yards to paydirt. Patrick added the PAT, with the score Comets 21, Dawgs 14. Little did they know it, but Abington Heights would never let their lead slip away from this point on. Patrick would add a 42 yard field goal after and interception by Jr. DB J.C Show, with the score Comets 24, Dawgs 14.

Berwick would put together a sustained drive late in the 2nd quarter going 78 yards on 11 plays, only to see Jr. QB C.J. Curry come up just two yards short of the goldzone as time expired in the first half and the Dawgs were turned away.

The Dawgs would start quick in the 2nd half just needing three plays to find the scoreboard with Steeber scoring his second of the day on a 55 yard scamper. Seely’s PAT was good, with the score Comets 24, Dawgs 21.

Abington Heights then would answer right back as Hollander got involved in another special teams score, running the kickoff  back 75 yards to paydirt. Patrick’s PAT was good and with just one minute and 46 minutes ran off in the 3rd quarter both teams had scored, with the score Comets 31, Dawgs 21.

Berwick would again answer on their next series, going 67 yards on 13 plays with Steeber capping the drive on a three yard jaunt. Seely’s PAT good, with the score Comets 31, Dawgs 28.

The Comets would only need three plays to find the goldzone on their next series with Judge capping the 60 yard scoring drive on a 25 yard scamper. Patrick PAT good, with the score Comets 38, Dawgs 28.

The Dawgs would get their final score of the day with 7:25 left in the game as Cashman returned an Abington Height’s punt 75 yards to the Comet’s five yard line. Steeber would need just two plays to get the next five yards. Seely’s  PAT was good, with the score Comets 38, Dawgs 35.

Abington Height would seal the deal on their next offensive series with another touchdown. This time, the Comets would march 69 yards on seven plays with Show hauling in the 10 yard pass from Pasqualichio to cap the final score of the day.

Berwick would run eight plays on their final offensive series, with a turnover on downs. Abington Height would go into victory formation to run out the clock on their next series, with the final score Comets 44, Dawgs 35.

  • Dawgs use solid 2nd half to surge past Mounts

Sr. WR Jeff Steeber has 105 all-purpose yards in Berwick win

BERWICK- The Dawgs used a balance of the run and passing game this Saturday afternoon at Crispin Memorial Field, recording 130 yards on the ground along with a passing game that accumulated 136 yards. Sr. RB Matt Cashman would carry the ball 14 times for 45 yards with one td, while Sr. Jeff Steeber would rush for 65 yards on six carries, which included a huge touchdown on a 33 yard reverse late in the 4th quarter. Steeber also contributed to the passing game with three receptions totaling 40 yards.

Berwick would find the scoreboard on their very first drive of the day after the defense was able to record a three and out on the Mountaineers first possession. The Dawgs would put together an 11 play drive capped by a 25 yard field goal from So. K Olivia Seely after the Dallas “D” stood tall, with the score Dawgs 3, Mounts 0.

Dallas again would go three and out on their next series but their defense also kept Berwick from putting another drive together until the Dawgs struck at the 7:13 mark of the 2nd quarter. Sr. WR Jake Pecorelli would haul in a 38 yard strike from Jr. QB CJ Curry with Curry picking up the one on one coverage and lofting a perfect pass to Peck. Seely would have the PAT blocked, with the score Dawgs 9, Mount 0.

Dallas would find the scoreboard with just 45 seconds left in the first half, with Sr. RB Kris Roccograndi capping a 12 play scoring drive that totaled 77 yards on a four yard jaunt. The PAT was good, with the score Dawgs 9, Mounts 7 at the half.

Dallas would start the second half with an attempt of an onsides kick, trying to catch the Dawgs napping. Berwick So. Zach Andress “The good hands people” covered the kick with ease and the Dawgs would start their first drive of the 2nd half near mid field. The Mounts’ defense again stood tall as Berwick actually lost yardage on three plays from scrimmage and were forced to punt.

Dallas, then again put together a fairly nice drive with eight plays leading to a field goal attempt of around 40 yards. If the Mounts were to make the three pointer they would have had their first lead of the day, instead the pigskin was blocked at the line of scrimmage by Sr. Will Masteller and Berwick would take over at their own 31 yard line. Although, Berwick was unable to score on the ensuing drive, the blocked field goal seemed to turn momentum in Berwick’s favorite and in a sense they never looked back.

The Dawgs would score early in the 4th quarter with Cashman capping an eight play drive on a five yard scamper. The PAT was blocked, with the score Dawgs 15, Mounts 7. Steeber played a huge part of the drive as Curry scrambled around on a 4th and 24 only to connect with Steeber at the five yard line, setting up Cashman for the score. Coach Curry said of the play, “Looked like someone might have had a guardian angel out their on that one.”

Berwick again scored with just 4 minutes left in the game on the Steeber reverse of 33 yards. In all, the Dawgs offense would go 84 yards in 9 plays with Steeber capping things off. The two point conversion failed, with the score Dawgs 21, Mounts 7.

Berwick’s Sr. Zach Ladonis would finish the scoring off for the day with a 12 yard interception return on the Mounts final attempt to put a sustained driver together. Instead, Ladonis would step in front of the attempted pass and walk to paydirt. The PAT was good, with the final score Dawgs 28, Mounts 7.

“We played a good football team here today”, noted Coach Curry, speaking of the Dallas Mountaineers. ”Tell ya what, we had some trouble blocking in the first half and had to make a few adjustments. Our defense, they did it today. We knew the defense had to keep Zapoticky from getting to the outside today.”

With the win, Berwick will host Abington Heights this coming Saturday at 1 PM in the class AAA district 2 championship game. Abington Heights defeated Valley View to earn the right to come to Dawgtown.

    Until next week…happy football!

  • Dawgs down Hazleton Area, secure home playoff game

    Berwick tops Cougars 49-7

BERWICK- The Dawgs were able to get it done tonight at Crispin Field in dominating fashion with a 49-7 win over the Hazleton Area Cougars. With the win Berwick has secured a home playoff game, tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 1pm. Their opponent will either be Dallas, Crestwood or Valley View, which may depend on the outcome of the game between Dallas and Lake-Lehman to be played Saturday afternoon at Dallas.

Another game the Dawgs will be interested in this Saturday will be Scranton and Abington Heights which will be played at “The Pit” home of the Comets. If Scranton, who is a heavy favorite, wins. Berwick will then receive the top seed in the District 2 class AAA tournament. That means if they win their first playoff game its back to Crispin Field for the District 2 championship game. If Abington Heights were to knock off Scranton, they would receive the top spot and Berwick could end up at “The Pit” for the District 2 title game. With all that said, let’s get to tonight’s win over Hazleton Area.

Berwick would dominate early, only giving up 22 total yards on defense in the first half and taking a 29-0 lead in at the half. Finding paydirt for Berwick would be Sr. RB Matt Cashman with two td’s via the ground game, Sr. WR Jeff Steeber on a 52 yard reception from Jr. QB CJ Curry and Sr. LB Travis Potter on a 41 yard fumble recovery and scamper. Potter would recover the fumble after Sr. Zach Ladonis stripped the pigskin loose.

Berwick would tack on three more td’s in the 2nd half with scores from Cashman on a 10 yard scamper, second team QB So. Dallas Arner on a 15 yard dash to paydirt and second team RB So. Nate Maczuga on a 49 yard scamper.

Hazleton Area would find the goldzone just once on the night, with Sr. Brad Zanette notching one in, with the final score Dawgs 49, Cougars 7.

On a side note, everyone would like to wish a get well soon to equipment manager Jim Beaver who is in the hospital and of course was not at tonight’s game. Jim is a big part of Berwick Football and has been close to the team for many moons. Get well soon Beav!

  • Berwick records win at Wilkes-Barre Memorial, improves to 8-1

Dawgs post 34-7 win over W-B Coughlin

WILKES-BARRE- The Berwick Bulldogs traveled route 11 north Friday night, making their first trip to Wilkes-Barre during the 2011 campaign. James M Coughlin would be the Dawgs opponent, who came in 7-32 against Berwick in the season series losing the last eight of nine.

Coughlin would only be down by 12, with the Dawgs leading 12-0 at the half, but the Dawgs determination again won out scoring the 34-7 victory in front of a nice crowd at W-B Memorial Stadium.

The Dawgs two touchdowns in the first half would come from sophomore sensation Andrew Force and Sr. WR Jeff Steeber. Force would keep his streak of TD catches alive with six receptions on the season, ALL six being touchdown passes. Force would cash in on a 21 yarder from Jr. QB CJ Curry and Steeber would find paydirt on a 10 yard pitch left.

Berwick would take a 20-0 lead late in the 3rd quarter after Coughlin tried a fake punt on a 4th and 10 at their 48 yard line. Berwick’s “D” would stand tall and turn away the Crusaders. The offense would take over at their own 44 yard line with Curry ripping off a 30 yard dash to cash just four plays later. Steeber was successful on the two point conversion and the Dawgs stretched their lead to 20.

Coughlin would finally find the scoreboard with only .27 left in the 3rd quarter going 58 yards on nine plays with Sr. RB Hunter Bednarczyk finding the goldzone on a 14 yard jaunt.

The Dawgs would answer back with two more scores of their own with Sr. RB Matt Cashman capping an eight play drive on a 34 yard scamper and then again on a 10 play drive capped by a 24 yard scamper, with the final score Dawgs 34, Crudaders 7.

“I told the kids; Coughlin will try and break our will. That’s what they do, they try and break you. We have to force our will on them, said Coach Curry. “These kids had 12 formations they had to know for this game. We played smash mouth football tonight and got the win.”

With the win, the Dawgs have improved to 8-1 with only Hazleton Area at home next week the only game left in the regular season. The way it’s shaping up now, if Berwick could get bye Hazleton Area next week and quad A Scranton would beat Abington Heights next week. The Dawgs would be the number one seed in the district 2 AAA playoffs and would have two home games if they advanced after game one.

The Dawgs could have either Crestwood, Valley View or Dallas at home in their first playoff game the way it looks right now, but nothing is set in stone except for the Dawgs certainly playing postseason football.

    Until next week…Happy football!

  • Cashman is money for Dawgs

Sr. RB rushes for 166 yards as Berwick squeaks by Pittston Area

YATESVILLE- Pittston Area has not had the greatest luck against the Berwick Bulldogs over the years, winning only two of their previous 28 meetings. The Patriots defeated Berwick in 2003 under the tutelage of George Curry and then again in 2006 with Gary Campbell at the helm.

Tonight on a very wet field which made for a very interesting game, Pittston Area played an almost flawless contest but game up short to a determined Berwick team.

Berwick Sr. Wideout Jeff Steeber would find paydirt with only 1:13 left in the game to give Berwick the lead for good after trailing 20-15 to start the fourth quarter. Sr. DB Will Masteller sealed the deal with an interception on Pittston Area’s first play of their final possession, with the final score Dawgs 23 Pats 20.

Berwick would jump on the scoreboard quickly on their opening drive going 55 yards in only five plays with Cashman capping the drive on a four yard scamper. So. K Olivia Seely nailed the PAT with the score Dawgs 7, Pats 0.

Pittston Area would answer back early in the second quarter on a 11 play drive that covered 84 yards with Sr. WR Joe Starinsky capping the drive on a 32 yard TD reception from So. QB Kyle Gattuso. Sr. K Derrick Donoto’s PAT was good with the score Dawgs 7, Pats 7.

Starinsky, again found paydirt on another long pass from Gatusso, this time covering 51 yards to give Pittston Area their first lead of the night at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter with the score Pats 14, Dawgs 7.

The Dawgs would answer back on their very next possession after Pittston Area captured the lead as Cashman ripped off a 50 yard dash to cash. A Pats’ penalty on the PAT had Berwick now go for two as Cashman converted on the short run with the score at the half Dawgs 15, Pat 14.

Pittston Area regained the lead with 7:16 left in the third quarter on another TD reception from Starinsky, this time a 20 yard hook up from Gattuso. The Pats only needed three plays to find the goldzone after Cashman decided to tuck the ball away and run instead of punting away from his own 16 on a 4th and 20.

“It was there a few times in the first half, but it certainly was a mistake on my part to try and gain the first down in that situation. I just was not thinking how deep I was in my own territory and if we would have lost this game, it would of been on my shoulders,” said Cashman of the fake punt.

Instead, Sr. RB Jeff Steeber would be the hero as he capped a six play drive starting at the Pittston Area 39 late in the fourth quarter on a 12 yard scamper. Berwick would regain the lead for good and with a two point conversion held a 23-20 lead with only 1:13 left in the ball game.

Will Masteller would intercept Gattuso’s first play from scrimmage as he was mobbed by his teammates, sealing the win for the Dawgs improving their record to 7-1 with just two games left in the regular season.

The Dawgs will travel to Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium next Friday night to lock horns with Wilkes-Barre Coughlin, a team that Pittston Area defeated the prior week.

Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium has been a home away from home during many of Berwick’s championship runs under Curry with one of the Dawgs’ most memorable playoff wins taking place their against Manheim Central. In a game that Berwick trailed 17-0 at the half only to come back a win 18-17 in route of another state title.

    Until next week…happy football!

  • Berwick cashes in against Billport, wins big

Dawgs gain 422 total yards in 54-14 win over Williamsport

BERWICK- It was 1994 when the Williamsport Millionaires came to Crispin Field and shocked the Dawgs, handing them their only loss of the ’94 season as the Dawgs went on to win their third state title.

Tonight was not quite the same outcome for Billport as they struggled much of the entire night suffering a 54-14 loss at the hands of the Dawgs. Berwick would score 47 points to Williamsport’s seven in the first half, which had the game open in the mercy rule to start the second half.

Jr. QB CJ Curry would pass for 203 yards with three TD’s, with So. WR Andrew Force catching two for 113 yards with two TD’s and Sr. Jake Pecorelli catching four for 70 yards with one TD.

Force has five catches on the season, all of which have ended with points. Curry joked with the media in his postgame press conference, “guess he is a homerun hitter, singles are not his game.”

Sr. RB Matt Cashman would also find the goldzone three times. One on an eight yarder, another on a 13 yarder and finally a one yarder.

Sr. WR Jeff Steeber was another to get on the scoreboard tonight, with a seven yard dash to cash and So. RB Nate Maczuga finished the scoring on the night for Berwick on a 10 yard TD rush.

The Dawgs would start the second half holding a 47-7 lead while playing under the mercy rule, which means continuous clock movement except for timeouts and change of possessions. Berwick’s first string would not see any second half action as Coach Curry started his second team and used them the entire second half.

Williamsport would score one TD in the first half, with Sr. Caleb Belle ripping off a 78 yard kick return and then another in the second half, as Fr. QB Jerah Reeves hooked up with Sr. WR Achilles Watson for a 61 yard TD pass.

With the win the Dawgs have improved to 6-1 and will travel to Yatesville next Friday night to take on Pittston Area, whom knocked off Wilkes-Barre Coughlin 38-36 in other Friday night action.

    Until next week…Happy Football!

  • Berwick cruises past Tunkhannock, improves to 5-1

So. WR Andrew Force gains 132 yards receiving with two TD’s

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

The Berwick Bulldogs played host to the Tunkhannock Tigers at Crispin Memorial Field Friday night in Wyoming Valley Conference action. It would be the 22nd time that both teams would meet with Berwick coming in with a 20-1 series record against the Tigers. The Dawgs only lost to Tunkhannock came in their first meeting in 1987, which is infamously known as the “Ice Bowl”. Berwick was defeated 7-6 in below freezing temperatures in what was the Eastern Conference semifinal. The very next year the PIAA state tournament was created with the Dawgs winning their first state title.

The Dawgs were able to make it 21 straight against the Tigers recording a 49-0 win at home in this one. Jr. QB CJ Curry would pass for 201 yards on just five completions with two huge TD passes to So. WR Andrew Force. Force would haul one in for 77 yards and then another for 55 yards both finding paydirt.

Berwick would also get scores from Sr. WR Jake Pecorelli on a 32 yard reception, Jr. Kyle Trenholm on a 77 yard kick return, Sr. RB Matt Cashman on a one yarder and then again on a four yarder. Capping the scoring on the night would be So. RB Nick Talanca on a five yard dash to cash.

“It was nice to contribute tonight,” said Force of his two big TD’s from Curry. “Being a sophomore, it’s all about getting experience right now so that I can improve the next two seasons,” noted Force.

Berwick would finish with 393 yards total offense on the night, with huge pass plays from the line of scrimmage leading the way along with the big kick return from Trenholm.

With the win, the Dawgs have improved to 5-1 with Williamsport up next at home. Then it’s on the road to Yatesville for Pittston Area and then Wilkes-Barre Memorial for Coughlin. Berwick will end the regular season at home with Hazleton Area with the possibility of a home playoff game the next week. Of course, the outcome of the next four will play a big part in getting a home playoff game.

    Until next week…Happy Football!

  • Berwick rebounds, slides past Selinsgrove

Sr. RB Matt Cashman 147 yards on 29 carries with two TD’s

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

SELINSGROVE- Berwick traveled route 11 south Friday evening in hopes of rebounding off a tough loss on the road last week. After suffering their first defeat of the season against rival Valley West last Friday, Berwick would look to hand the Selinsgrove Seals their first loss of the season. The Seals came into the contest 4-0 with wins against Mifflinburg, Trinity, Shikellamy and rival Shamokin. It certainly was not the best match-up for Berwick, looking to rebound, as Selinsgrove is always a top notch program and again not the easiest place to win a road game.

The Dawgs would gain the early lead going 70 yards on seven plays in their opening drive with Sr. RB Matt Cashman carrying the ball five times while Jr. QB CJ Curry carried twice on the keeper. Cashman would cap the drive on a 10 yard dash to cash.

Selinsgrove would answer back with only 47 seconds left in the first quarter going 23 yards on just four plays after an interception by Sr. DB Tyler Krebs deep in Berwick territory. Fr. RB Juvon Batts capped the short drive on a 5 yard scamper to paydirt.

Berwick would take the lead on a 27 yard field goal by So. K Olivia Seely, which capped a 10 play drive going 54 yards. Both teams would head to the break with Berwick clinging to the 10-7 lead after Seely’s boot.

The third quarter would not see any scoring with both teams struggling to find paydirt. By midway of the 4th quarter it was looking like Seely’s field goal may just be the deciding factor with the Dawgs still holding the 10-7 lead. Berwick would then burn 5:16 off the 4th quarter clock on a 13 play drive that ended in a punt but ran the clock down to just 2:04 remaining in the ballgame.

On Selinsgrove very first play from scrimmage after receiving the punt, Berwick Jr. DB Andrew Wenner would intercept and the Dawgs took over the pigskin at the Seals 24 yard line. Four plays later Cashman found the goldzone and the Dawgs padded their lead after Seely’s PAT, with the score Dawgs 17, Seals 7.

After the game Olivia Seely was asked what she thought of the game possibly ending at 10-7 and winning it on her foot. “I’m glad we scored, I wasn’t looking to be the game winner. It’s just fun being out here.”

Seely is the daughter of former Berwick standout Keith Seely and 1986 Boston College grad. Keith has been on the coaching staff for many moons and is one of Curry’s main cogs in the well-oiled coaching machine in Dawgtown.

“She had a soccer game this afternoon, so I waited in Berwick until it was over and then drove her down to Selinsgrove,” noted Seely of getting his sure footed daughter to the game on time. Berwick did win the soccer game 3-0, but better yet they won the football game 17-7 and improved their record to 4-1.

The Dawgs will get back to some home cooking next week as they host the Tunkhannock Tigers, until then…Happy Football!

  • Berwick upended in Kingston

Valley West Sr. RB rushes for 248 yards in Spartans win

KINGSTON- Derrick Simms had a career night at Spartan’s Stadium in Kingston racking up 248 yards rushing on 24 carries as the Spartans turned away previously unbeaten Berwick 33-15. The Dawgs would have their hands full right from the start having some difficulty stopping the Spartan’s run option, with Simms scoring early off the option pitch.

Berwick would have a 15-7 lead in the first quarter without any yards on offense and no first downs. Sr. RB Matt Cashman scored on a kick return of 85 yards right after the Spartans took the early 7-0 lead. The Dawgs would gain the lead on a defensive touchdown, with Jr. LB Jordan Stout going 85 yards to paydirt. It would be the first and only time Berwick would see the lead and the closest they would come to the Spartans on the night.

Valley West would take a 22-15 lead in at half time accumulating over 200 yards on the ground with 13 first downs. Berwick, on the other hand, only had 42 yards total offense and just 3 first downs in the first half.

The Spartans added to their lead in the second half with a field goal, safety and touchdown outplaying the Dawgs on route to the 33-15 win.

Valley West really took it to Berwick tonight and had a very good game plan going in from Head Coach Pat Keating. The option pitch to Simms really had the Dawgs back on their toes early, with Simms ripping off big yards.

On the defensive side of the ball the Spartans were able to shut down Cashman a bit, although Berwick was in catch up mode most of the night, which hurt the run game.

CJ Curry did not get the protection as in the past three games and was on his back quite a bit tonight. The rush from Valley West was pretty extensive and the offensive line was unable to stop the ensuing pressure.

The Dawgs were outplayed tonight, by a team that was certainly ready for them to come to town. Berwick will look to rebound next week as they travel to Selinsgrove, in what should be another tough task.

    Until next week…happy football!

  • Dawgs put up 50 in rout of Mounts

Curry throws for 256 yards in 50-14 win

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

BERWICK- If you walked by the Berwick Field House before tonight’s game at Crispin Field you might of noticed a write up hanging on the front door. The article was titled “Berwick thoroughly embarrassed by Dallas.”  Tonight that article finally came down after hanging around all of the off-season, torn down by the very players who hung it up last season after a 53-20 loss at Dallas. “That was a reminder of the beating we took last season and it felt pretty good to tear it down tonight and reverse the tables here at home,” noted Jr. QB CJ Curry.

Curry would throw for 242 yards tonight with two TD passes along with one TD via the ground, a 28 yard scamper to paydirt. Sr WR Jake Pecorelli hooked up with Curry for two TD passes, one for 51 yards and another for 54 yards.

Sr. RB Matt Cashman would rush for 104 yards on 19 carries with three TD’s. A 13 yard scamper, a 28 yarder and 9 yard dash.

Dallas would score their 14 points in the first half, keeping things close after Berwick jumped out to an early 15-0 lead.

Sr. RB Kris Roccograndi would be the first to find paydirt for the Mounts on a 58 yard dash to cash. Sr. WR Jason Simonovich also scored for Dallas on an 82 yard TD pass from Sr. QB Ryan Zapoticky, which at the time brought the Mounts within 7 points of the Dawgs, with the score 21-14. It would be the closest Dallas would come to Berwick on the night, as the Dawgs ripped off the next four TD’s without an answer from the Mounts.

“They are a tough team, they have a great quarterback and a very solid running back. They had the two big plays tonight, which kept them in the game early,”said Coach Curry of the Mounts. “We have some big playmakers showing up for us right now and our quarterback has been sharp. We seem to be picking up momentum and that’s a very important part of high school football.”

Coach Curry was asked in his post-game press conference, if he was surprised that the team has jelled so quickly. He was quick to respond “no”. “Remember, most of all these kids have fathers I have coached before. For example, the first meeting I had was scheduled for 9 am. When I walked in the weight room at 8 am all the kids were already there waiting for me, haircuts, all cleaned up and no jewelry hanging around. That’s when we started to jell, day 1.”

  • Dawgs defense stands tall, blanks Pottsville

    Berwick rolls up Tide 41-0

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

The Berwick Bulldogs opened at home this Friday night as the Pottsville Crimson Tide came to Dawgtown sporting their wing T offense. An offense that Berwick Head Coach George Curry has seen many times before from Tide Head Coach Pat Keating. Curry and his troops were able to prepare all week for the wing T and shut it down with perfection, putting up the shutout in a 41-0 win over rival Pottsville.

Pottsville gained only 47 total yards of offense in the first half with only three first downs. Berwick, on the other hand, would find the goldzone four times with scores from Sr. WR Jeff Steeber, Sr. WR Jake Pecorelli and Sr. RB Back Matt Cashman.   Jr. QB CJ Curry accumulated 231 yards passing in the first half, ending the game with 252 yards in the air. Cashman would accumulate 110 yards rushing on 21 carries in the game. Pecorelli had 133 yards on just two receptions and Steeber had 69 yards receiving on four receptions. Steeber also added 33 yards rushing on two carries and Pecorelli added 11 yards on the ground.

Steeber would add another score for the Dawgs in the second half along with Andrew Force who found paydirt on a 26 yard strike from Curry to end the scoring on the night.

The Dawgs’ second string defense also got a chance to play a part in tonight’s game, stopping the Tides’ first team offense in a late drive, keeping the shutout alive. As Berwick fans chanted, “Curry’s back.”

“We practiced stopping the wing T all week,” said Coach Curry. “We were very confident that we could stop their run game, knowing that was key in getting the win. The guys really did a great job preparing for tonight’s match-up and it certainly showed.”

QB Curry was prepared to go to the air and  hooked up with Pecorelli for two huge pass plays. “We knew they would be keying on Cashman tonight after the big game at Crestwood last week, so I expected to pass the ball a bit tonight. The line gave me great protection and in turn we were able to get some yards in the air,” noted QB Curry.

Pecorelli has been a big play maker for the Dawgs in the early season, hauling in some huge pass plays from Curry and seems to be a go to guy for the junior QB. “We have been friends since grade school,” noted Pecorelli. “We really have a good rhythm together and seem to know what each other is thinking, which certainly helps executing big plays.”

“We have good team speed and get to the ball quick,” noted Coach Curry. “Tonight we gang tackled and stopped the east to west running by taking their guards out of the game. Again, we were very confident we could shut down their offense.”

Berwick now moves to 2-0 on the season and will get Dallas next Friday night at Crispin Field. After talking to Coach Curry after the game, I got a chance to ask him when he will start thinking about Dallas. “About 5:30 am on Saturday morning, the field house is again my home here at Berwick. That’s where I spend most of my time. I’m so keyed up of late, it doesn’t even seem like I left.”

  • Berwick rolls by Crestwoood, offense puts up big numbers

Sr. RB Matt Cashman rushes for 285 yards in 48-21 win

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

The Berwick Bulldogs kicked off their 2011 campaign scoring quickly in their opener at Crestwood High School in Mountaintop Friday night. The Dawgs would score in their first drive needing only four plays along with two Crestwood penalties to march 69 yards to paydirt. Sr. RB Matt Cashman capped off the drive on a 32 yard scamper. So. K. Olivia Seely nailed the PAT and Berwick never looked back, recording a 48-21 win over the Comets.

Senior running back Matt Cashman had a huge night coming only 20 yards away from tying Berwick’s all-time rushing record of 305 yards set by Mike Graybeal in 1975. Brant Quick also recorded 303 yards against Coughlin at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium in 2004.

“I had no clue how many yards I had in the game, but it certainly is nice to be in that kind of company,” noted Cashman after talking with the media at the end of the night.

Berwick had the contest in hand much of the night and Cashman actually did not play the entire game as Coach Curry sat most of his starters half way through the fourth quarter.

The Dawgs second score would come at the end of the first quarter going 89 yards on 12 plays. Cashman carried the bulk of the load during the drive with six rushes. Jr. QB CJ Curry would cap the drive on a ten yard keeper to paydirt.

Berwick again found the goldzone after a fumble recovery by Sr. DE Brandon Dalberto thanks to the strip by Sr. OL Ray Grasley. Cashman capped the short drive on a four yard dash to cash.

The Dawgs found the scoreboard once again on their next possession after a turnover on downs by the Comets. Curry completed to Sr. WR Jake Pecorelli for a 50 yard pass play to paydirt. The two point conversion was good with the score 27-0 at the 7:49 mark of the second quarter.

Crestwood finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:05 mark of the second quarter on a 45 yard interception return by So. LB Frank Aigeldinger. Berwick and Cashman would answer right back with the Dawgs running back ripping off a 70 yard rush to Crestwood’s 18 yard line. Two plays later Pecorelli completed the drive on a five yard dash. Seely nailed the PAT to make the score Berwick 34, Comets 7.

Crestwood started the second half scoring on their opening drive going 64 yards on nine plays, with Sr. RB Evan Callaghan capping things off on a one-yard rush.

The Dawgs tacked on two more scores before the end of the contest with Pecorelli scoring on an eight yard scamper and then on a 32 yard pass play from Curry. Sr. DL Adam Harrison also recovered a fumble to set up one of the scoring drives.

Crestwood was the last to strike paydirt late in the fourth quarter with Aigeldinger hauling in a 51 yarder, with the final score Dawgs 48, Comets 21.
Cashman was quick to praise his offensive line for the huge chucks of yards picked up on the ground tonight. In the first quarter Cashman had already recorded 86 yards on the ground and in the first half had 181 yards.

As for Coach Curry, he chuckled with the media a bit after the game, admitting he was nervous before the start. “It was like I was starting all over again, I felt like a kid. I have to admit I could barely stand waiting for thing to start. It kind of felt like it was the first game I ever coached.”

Berwick will open things at home next Friday night as Pottsville comes to Dawgtown. Get there early…it will be a dandy. Until then…Happy Football!

  • Berwick plays even scrimmage with Mifflin County

Huskies bring Navy’s flex bone offense to Crispin Field

    By Frank Kastreva, Easternpafootball.com

Mifflin County, one of district 6’s quad A schools traveled to Dawgtown Thursday night for what would be both the Huskies and Dawgs final tune up before opening night. With Mifflin County came a big squad in numbers and a huge team in size. Their offense is tailored made from the Navy Academy’s flex bone O and their defense up front was gigantic. In the end both teams would trade two td’s in what many would say was a very evenly matched scrimmage.

County would get off to a fast start, shutting the Dawgs down on their first 10 plays and then finding paydirt on the offensive side of the ball in their first 5 plays. But Berwick would buckle down and play much better as the scrimmage continued.

The Dawgs kept the Huskies off of the scoreboard in the next 25 plays and would tack on a td, with a 35 yard pass play from Jr. QB CJ Curry to Jr. WR Alex Klinger. There would be no more scoring until down and distance play, which came toward the end of the contest with both teams getting an offensive series.

Berwick would score on their series, going 70 yards on 9 plays, with Curry scoring on a 10 yard QB keeper to cap the drive. Mifflin County would then in turn score on their offensive series, going 70 yards on 15 plays, converting on a 4th and 6 toward the middle of the drive.

Dawgs’ Sr. RB Matt Cashman was again very successful running the pigskin, averaging about 4 yards a carry against a big team up front. Berwick would look very good on defense recovering a fumble and picking off a few passes, while only giving the ball up once on offense via the interception. Of course, not much was to come from the takeaways, being both teams were given 10 plays on each offensive series, less the down and distance play.

“Tell ya what, that’s a pretty good football team we scrimmaged today. They are a quad A playoff team from last season and we played them tough,” noted Coach Curry.

Berwick will open their 2012 campaign this coming Friday night at Crestwood High School in Mountaintop. The Comets have played the Dawgs tough the last few seasons and this is a team that Curry has not seen a lot of. Crestwood was a team that would not normally be on Berwick’s schedule in years past and actually was one of the teams added to their schedule when Campbell took over the program.

I suspect Coach Curry will have the troops ready, until next week…Happy Football!

  • By George, He’s Back

    By Frank Kastreva,
    Easternpafootball.com

The deep green grass that once covered what some say is “the place the football gods sleep” is gone, replaced with a more durable, stronger surface.  Years back, by the time November came around the surface at Crispin Field was pretty much beat up, but the “DAWGS” roaming that field on the other hand were just tuning up. Ready for another playoff run under the tutelage of “The General”, Pennsylvania’s all-time win leader and icon in the high school football world.

Crispin Field home of the Berwick Bulldogs and 6 state titles has not quite been the same over the past few years and the hoopla that once followed the storied program from “Dawg Town” has certainly been on a lesser level. Wins have been tough to come by on a regular basis and the “Berwick Swagger” that once flowed through town like a rushing river has dried up a bit.

Well, if your glass be empty, may it fill again! By George, he’s back!  George Curry is returning as the head football coach at Berwick High School. And for a football program that put Berwick on the map, there could not be any better news. Administration at Berwick announced after a meeting Monday evening that Curry will coach on an interim basis for the 2012 season.

The buzz coming out of Berwick is major, all I have spoken to are very excited and I would expect the town to be buzzing from now to opening night. Long lines are back in Berwick and I’m not talking about the local super market.

Curry will have his work cut out for himself, but he won’t have to worry about getting lost making it to the field house or finding his way around town. Berwick is Curry’s home and when he’s coaching Berwick Football home is normally the field house. There are not many in the business that put as much time in as Curry and he expects as much from his players. It won’t be a picnic for many, but winning will be more of the norm if all buys in.

Vince Lombardi once said “winning is contagious and so is losing.” If you’re a true sports fan you know how true that statement is. It’s time to go old school Berwick fans, bring back the ribbons and bows, hang out that “Fire Up Dawgs” sign, let that siren blow, how about dawning those red socks during a playoff run once again. Where are those white helmets, we still got, break em out.

Berwick football will again be the main story in the coming season. Curry will have a chance to coach is grandson, who was the back-up QB last season. The son of Coz Curry, who I expect will be helping dad out again as in the old days.

The Dawg’s schedule is not quite as strong as it was in years past, not sure if that will be a good or bad thing for Curry. We all know George always approves of a very strong schedule. To be the best you have to beat the best.

I’m sure if you spoke to Curry, he expects to win and he will be instilling that attitude in to his players right from the start. Attitude is half the battle and bringing back that winning tradition comes with the right attitude.

I have been watching Berwick football for many years, making my way up river during Curry’s stent at Valley West and enjoyed calling many of the games with George at the helm in Kingston. But the Friday nights that I spent watching the Dawgs at Crispin Field are my finest memories. That day George stepped away was a tough time for me and many others, it kind of felt like something died in me. Like and empty space was left. For the first time in many years, that space is again filled.

    STIR UP THE ECHOES!!

Facing health issues, coach Curry retires

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

George Curry, Pennsylvania’s winningest high school football coach has officially retired from the game he loves.

The 64 year old football legend, who is known for guiding the Berwick Bulldogs to six state titles along with national accolades will not walk the sidelines anywhere according to his resignation delivered to Wyoming Valley West Athletic Director Sandy Mackay on Wednesday, December 2, 2008.

The resignation states: “This decision is very painful and difficult for me, since it will not only mark the end of coaching at Wyoming Valley West, but also the end of my coaching career.”

The letter also states Curry’s retiring is based solely on health issues, but does not go in to what those issues may be.

Curry is a very private person and of course does not want his health issues blotted all over the local papers and the world wide web, for that matter.

Curry has coached for three years at Wyoming Valley West after leaving Berwick, putting the Dawgs’ football program in the lime light. Why Curry left the Berwick football program was never printed and to some still a mystery, but the private Curry surely had his reasons.

After coaching the Spartans, Berwick’s fiercest rival, for three seasons with a record of 26-8 and qualifying for the playoffs all three years. Curry will no longer be making the route 11 trip up river each day. Instead, he will be enjoying the comforts of home with his family in a place he has always called home, Berwick.

Not coaching football will be Curry’s toughest challenge, next to his health issues. Coach has been walking the sidelines for 42 years, accumulating 413 victories while touching the lives of countless people, myself included.

It has been a pleasure for many to watch him teach, coach and just plain enjoy football and his energy put forth to the game and the student athletes that play it.

Curry’s successor at Valley West will be assistant coach Pat Keating, whom finished his first year at Valley West. Keating is a 1996 graduate of Wyoming Valley West and was named head coach shortly after Curry’s resignation.

After writing on George Curry’s career at Berwick and then at Valley West, I have had the privilege of watching one of the games finest teachers. Not just of football, but life itself. Curry instills that in everyone he touches, its just an ora about him. He is a leader and a damn good one.

When Curry left Berwick in November of 2005, I remember after the press conference, sitting on the turf of Crispin field just taking it all in.

I was just recalling all the games and memories. The stadium was empty, but the memories rushed back. It certainly felt like there was 10,000 fans awaiting the Dawgs to take the field to the sound of the siren while “The Cat” awaited for them on the sidelines.

And I thought………..Why does it have to end?

Just as coach surely feels right now!

For George it was time to come home and enjoy family, for me its time to come home and write and what Curry started. Non other then the tradition of Berwick Dawgs’ Football.

See all you Dawg fans on media day 2009. I will be the guy with the #3 ND Jersey, just keeping the tradition ALIVE!
  • Dawgs’ fate Sealed

Selinsgrove tops Berwick 14-6 to advance to Eastern finals
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

WILKES-BARRE- Memorial Stadium saw one of its biggest crowds in recent years Friday night as the Berwick Bulldogs played host to district four’s Selinsgrove Seals in the eastern semifinals of the PIAA championships.

Berwick’s faithful packed the stadium like days of old rooting their beloved Dawgs on their quest for yet another state title.

Manheim Central nor Strath Haven would not be the team in the Dawgs way as years past at W-B Memorial.

Not even the one they called “The General” walked the sidelines as the natives chanted and barked their Dawgs on.

No, there’s a new sheriff in town with many of the same posse saddling up each week and once again guiding Berwick’s student athletes to football supremacy.

It would not be the Dawgs’ finest two and a half hours tonight, but yes Berwick is still known for their FOOTBALL team and small high school with a big college atmosphere on game days.

Crispin Field, the turf Berwick calls home has been quoted as being “A place were the football gods sleep” and the bulldogs who sit atop the fence that guard football lair own part of high school football history, guarding it well.

The Selinsgrove Seals would be the team to beat tonight owning one of the Dawgs two blemishes during the regular season a 28-3 loss in Selinsgrove during week five.

Berwick would keep the game much closer this time around and once again fed of their defense, coming up on the short end of a 14-6 ballgame.

Honestly, if you were to look at this one on paper the Seals come in a favorite, but Berwick’s determination once again is back and Selinsgrove needed all they could get out of their skilled players. To their credit they got just enough and may just find themselves in the state title game.

Selinsgrove took the 7-0 lead on the Dawgs with 4:53 left in the first quarter with Jr. Ryan Keiser setting the Seals up at the Berwick 11 yard line on a 57 yard scamper. Jr. RB Matt Wenrich would cap the drive on a short run.

The Seals were once again poised for more points with the ball at the Berwick 15 yard line, but fumbled the pigskin away. The ball was pick up by the Dawgs Sr. Zach Powell, looking to return it the distance, only to be tripped up by the shoe tops falling to the turf of W-B Memorial.

Although Selinsgrove would cough it up, that play may of sealed Berwick’s fate. If the Dawgs take that ball all the way home for a score, who knows with momentum and all what happens.

The Dawgs would eventually get on the scoreboard with Sr. RB Duff Law taking one 25 yards to paydirt via the ground game on the Dawgs first series of the second half. The PAT would be blocked with the score Seals 7 Dawgs 6.

Selinsgrove would take a 14-6 lead with 10:08 left in the game with Jr. Cory Briggs capping a the scoring drive on a five yard TD reception.

The Seals looked like they would put the Dawgs away late with the pigskin deep in Berwick territory, but a fumble recovered by the Dawgs once again gave them hope.

Berwick would move the ball a bit on their final series, but two batted passes by the Seals defensive line would put to rest any chance of the classic Berwick comeback.

Selinsgrove would grind out the clock, kneeling on the ball and salting away the 14-6 victory.

With the win the Seals will face Archbishop Wood, whom defeated West Chester Rustin 37-7 to advance to the PIAA eastern finals.

As for the Dawgs, its a pleasant thought knowing that next season with the warmth of summer in the air. Fans will be lining up at the gates of Crispin Field for yet another home opener in the heartland of high school football, knowing their beloved Dawgs will, “play like a champion.”

  • East’ second half comeback falls short as West wins 58th UNICO All-Star Classic

Failed two point conversion looms large in 28-27 final

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

WILKES-BARRE- On the eve of Turkey Day high school football took center stage at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium as the 58th annual UNICO Classic kicked off. East vs. West in the form of the area’s best seniors, showing off their talents in their final high school football game.

The West got off to a quick start in this one with Valley West’ Ali Muhammad receiving a pass from Lake-Lehman’s Nate Vokel and scampering down the visitors sideline 73 yards to paydirt. Pittston Area’s Paul Gatusso nailed the PAT with the score West 7 East 0.

The East would tie things up with Hanover Area’s Rich Colorusso finding Holy Redeemer’s Robert Gawlas on a 23 yard TD reception. GAR’s Godson Tandoh would nail the point after attempt and things were all tied up at seven with still 8:29 left in the first quarter.

Muhammad would give the West the lead once again, this time a 15 yard TD reception from Pittston Area’s Brock Hazlet. Gatusso, again nailed the PAT with the score West 14 East 7.

The West would reel off two more TD’s in the first half with scores by Pittston Area’s Sam Parente on a 10 yard TD pass from Vokel, his second of the night and Lake-Lehman’s Cody Lamoreaux on a TD reception from Hazlet, also his second of the night.

Gatusso would be right on target with both point after attempts and the West would take a 28-7 lead into the half.

The East would make a gallant effort with a second half comeback, scoring 20 unanswered but falling short by one point on what could off been a game winning two point conversion. Instead, the conversion would fail and the West would hold on to the 28-27 win in a squeaker at the Stadium.

“I said to the kids we are going for it and they all were ready to go for the win said East’ Head Coach, Len Butcynski.” These kind of games are all about the kids, we had to go for the win there and the kids wanted to.”

Scoring for the East in the second half were, GAR’s Ryan Womack on a 23 yard TD reception from Coughlin’s Matt McClosky, Coughlin’s Mike Mitchell on a 59 yard fumble returned and Redeemer’s Gawlas on a 23 yard TD reception from Hazleton Area’s Matt Drumheller.

The MVP award, voted on by area sports writers went to Valley West’ Ali Muhammad, who had the West’ first two scores in the game.

Seniors from the Berwick Football team did not play in the game due to their current state playoff run in which they will host Selinsgrove this Friday night at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.

    Until then, Happy Football!

  • Dalberto leads Dawg’s defense in another stellar effort

Berwick downs district eleven Wilson Area 13-6 at Wilkes-Barre Memorial

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

WILKES-BARRE- This just in, “looks like we are still playing football come week fourteen,” to quote the dedicated Berwick football fans whom emptied out of Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium following the Dawgs 13-6 victory over prevoius unbeaten Wilson Area, making the trip from the Lehigh Valley.

Berwick came into the game not allowing a single point in their first two playoff games. Wilson came in averaging around 40 points a game. When it was all said and done, Berwick’s defensive shutout was over, but only allowed six points on two field goals.

Jr. FS Mike Dalberto would have two key interceptions, one returned around 80 yards to paydirt giving the Dawgs their second score of the night, which ended up being their final score of the night.

The Dawgs would jump out to the early lead with Jr. QB AJ Mihaly finding Sr. WR Cory Davenport on the 20 yard TD pass in the corner of the gold zone. Sr. K Shane Kitzmiller nailed the point after attempt with the score Dawgs 7 Warriors 0.
Dalberto would then return the interception for the long TD at the 8:49 mark of the second quarter, which would be all the Dawgs needed as the defense showcased their talents.

Berwick would allow just the two field goals from Wilson’s Jr. K Chris Rodriguez a 30 yarder and a 34 yarder and Dalberto would secure his second pick of the night, which salted the win away for the Dawgs.

Berwick’s pass rush was just too much for Wilson Area tonight. One fact to note, Wilson did not face one quad A team this season while Berwick faced three. It was evident that the Warriors were not tested by a strong pass rush and strength of scheduled played a part in that.

Wilkes-Barre Memorial stadium has been called home many times by the Dawgs during their state title runs and this year will be no exception. If the Dawgs keep winning they will not see another stadium until the state title game in Hershey.

All of the PIAA class AAA playoff games are scheduled at district two facilities, if a district two team is still alive in the tournament. Since Berwick defeated Wilson tonight they will now have Selinsgrove at W-B Memorial this coming Friday night.

Selinsgrove defeated Hollidaysburg 35-10 to advance and also own one of those two blemishes on the Dawg’s record, knocking Berwick from the unbeaten ranks in week five with a 28-3 win.

That game may of been the Dawg’s worst effort of the 2008 campaign and it should be a great rematch. The winner will by only one win away from playing for the class AAA state title in chocolatetown.

  • GAR grounds Hawks, sets date with Dunmore

Grenadiers hold off late rally by Hanover Area

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

WILKES-BARRE- Memorial Stadium was the site of the second round of the class AA playoffs in district two this Friday night, as the GAR Grenadiers played host to the Hanover Area Hawkeyes.

It would be a second time meeting for these two with GAR recording the 39-6 win during week seven of the regular season.

Tonight’s contest would be much closer and Hanover Area nearly pulled off what would of been a dramatic comeback to say the least.

The Grenadiers would take the lead at the start of the second quarter with Sr. RB Ryan Womack scampering 29 yards to paydirt. Sr. K Godson Tandoh would nail the point after attempt with the score GAR 7 Hawks 0.

Hanover Area answered right back as Jr. WR Tomas Cabrera took a screen pass from Sr. QB Rich Colorusso and promptly took it 44 yards to the gold zone.

The Hawks then tried a two point conversion on a broken play which failed. With the missed conversion GAR would hold a one point lead at 7-6.

There would be no more scoring until mid way through the third quarter with GAR’s Tandoh splitting the uprights on a 24 yard field goal with the score GAR 10 Hawks 6.

GAR would pad their lead even more at the start of the fourth quarter with Womack leading the way on the ground and then capping the drive on a one yard jaunt to paydirt. Tandoh, again nailed the PAT with the score GAR 17 Hawks 6.

The Hawks would once again crawl back into it on what some would call a trick play, at least the positioning of their starting QB was interesting.

Rich Colorusso, who is Hanover Area’s starting QB was a receiver on the play and Rich’s brother Brandon Colorusso was the quarterback. Brandon is a junior while Rich will graduate this year.

Brandon tossed a 29 yard TD strike to brother Rich, Colorusso to Colorusso and the Hawks were back in it 17-12. Hanover did try a two point conversion which failed and the score held at 17-12.

The game got even more interesting as the fourth quarter began to wind down under three minutes.

Hanover Area would hold GAR on an attempted fourth down conversion and would get the pigskin back around there own 30 yard line.

The Hawks would drive all the way to the GAR 33 yard line, only to have the Grenadiers stall the drive on a failed fourth down pass attempt.

With the win GAR advances to the district two class AA finals in which they will play Dunmore, whom beat Lakeland 34-13 to advance.

The game will be played at a neutral site in district two, most likely Scranton Memorial Stadium next Friday night, but that is NOT official.

Wherever the game is played, GAR will be the underdog and will have to rely on a huge game from Womack. Dunmore is strong on both sides of the ball and will certainly be the toughest team GAR has seen in the 2008 campaign.

  • Spartans secure playoff spot with win over Crusaders

Valley West downs Coughlin 28-13, will face Bethlehem Freedom
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
WILKES-BARRE- Left for dead after week four, a 1-3 Wyoming Valley West Spartans team looked very far away from any chance of the quad A subregional playoffs and for many seniors on this team that very thought was not sitting well.
After speaking with Sr. QB Jack Crossin after a week five win against Delaware Valley, who was 3-1 coming in to that game, he expected nothing more, but the members of his football team to rise to the occasion, run the table and make the playoffs at 7-3.
That all came to a reality Saturday night at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium as the Spartans downed the Coughlin Crusaders 28-13 in a very well played game by both squads.

Crossin lead the way with three TD’s, all coming by way of the ground game. So. RB George Simms also added a TD on three yard scamper. Simms was a big part of the game as was Ali Muhummad, who played and outstanding game on both sides of the ball.

Sr. RB Chris Hettes also got in on the rushing attack and the offensive line played a flawless game. In fact, the offensive line which was predicted to be the strength of this Spartans team has been playing up to their potential, which was not the case in the first four weeks.

The Crusaders would get TD’s from Sr. QB Matt McClosky on a three yard keeper and Sr. RB Justin Koslosky on a nine yard jaunt to the gold zone.

With the win the Spartans have secured the fifth seed in the AAAA subregional playoffs in which they will face Bethlehem Freedom in the Lehigh Valley either Friday or Saturday. Freedom enters the playoffs 8-2 as the fourth seed.

As for Coughlin they will travel to Berwick as the three seed in the class AAA district two playoffs. The Dawgs come in as the two seed, a team that beat Coughlin 12-0 in Dawgtown a few weeks back.

  • Pats clinch playoff spot with win over rival Wyoming Area

Pittston Area’s defense plays flawless first half in Pat’s win

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

YATESVILLE- When your defense hands the opposing offense minus yards in the first half, your chances of winning the football game are pretty good.

So after the Pittston Area Patriots went to halftime of their game with Wyoming Area up 7-0 and holding the Warriors to minus 8 eight yards of offense, it looked like the second half could get ugly.

Sr. RB Joe Ardo would be the Pats only score of the first half capping the drive on a three yard jaunt. Sr. Sam Parente hauled in a key reception from So. QB James Castellino to set Ardo up for the score.

The game would never get ugly and Wyoming Area found their offense a bit in the second half, scoring TD’s from Sr. Nate Bowden on a reverse pass thrown by Jr. Leo Malsky and then again on a 70 yard toss from So. QB Chris Murphy.

The Pats would find paydirt three different times in the second half with Parente leading the way on an 85 yard scamper on a short pass reception.

Jr. RB Chris Price also found the goldzone on a one yard jaunt and Sr. Matt Kobeski got in on the scoring with an interception and a 30 yard return, with the final score Pats 28 Warriors 14.

With the win the Patriots have clinched a spot in the district two class AAA playoffs in which they will travel to Clarks Summit and battle the Abington Heights Comets at “The Pit”.

As for Wyoming Area, they needed a win here to secure a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but with the loss it looks like their season has come to a close.

  • Berwick moves to 8-1, looks toward Hazleton Area

Dawgs bite early, cruise to 35-6 win over Mounts
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

Members of both the Berwick Bulldogs and Dallas Mountaineers were up at the crack of dawn today with a 10 AM game scheduled for Saturday morning in the Back Mountain.

The contest was moved from a 1 PM start to a 10 AM start in hopes of beating the heavy rained forecasted to hit Northeastern Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon.

Beating the rain worked, but as for the Mounts beating the Dawgs, well let’s just say that was certainly not in the forecast.

Not even an early start time would effect the Bulldogs as they scored early and often to the tune of a 35-0 lead at the half.

Sr. TE Ryan Sitler got the Dawgs on the board with a long TD reception from Jr. QB AJ Mihaly for an early 7-0 lead after a PAT by Sr. K Shane Kitzmiller.

Berwick added another quick score after Mihaley took one to the goldzone. Then Sr. Duff Law added another rushing TD giving the Dawgs a 21-0 lead with time winding down in the first quarter.

Berwick’s Jr. FS Mike Dalberto got in on the scoring to start the second quarter, intercepting a pass and rumbling 55 yards to paydirt.

Sitler finished off the Berwick scoring barrage hauling in a 34 yard TD reception from Mihaly late in the second quarter.

The score would be the Dawgs last of the morning as they started the second half with Dallas in the mercy rule.

Dallas would manage to get on the scoreboard in the second half as Berwick worked on the clock.

Scoring for the Mounts was Sr. RB Dean Chopka on a two yard jaunt after a long pass reception set Dallas up deep in Berwick territory.

The Dawgs will now look to a showdown at Crispin Field this coming Friday night as they host rival Hazleton Area.

Both teams will come in to the contest with records of 8-1 and guaranteed spots in their respective playoff classes.

It will be the biggest game in Berwick since a crushing loss to Valley West in 2007. On that day the Dawgs declared a white out as all fans were asked to were white.

Can I suggest changing the color to Bulldog Blue?

  • Valley West too much for Wyoming Area

    Spartans rout Warriors 42-13

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

WEST PITTSTON- After starting the 2008 campaign with a dismal 1-3 record, victory is the Wyoming Valley West Spartans only alternative to making the quad A subregional tournament.

Since the Spartans 34-7 debacle in front of the home fans in week four, losing has not been and option and winning is beginning to be the norm again. Which has all in Spartan land back in a enthusiastic mood.

After scoring the 42-13 win in West Pittston against Wyoming Area the Spartans are now 6-3 and have set themselves for a “win and your in” game in week ten.

Wilkes-Barre Coughlin will host Valley West this coming Saturday night, in what will be the last regular season game to be played in the Wyoming Valley Conference. The game will be held at W-B Memorial Stadium.

Valley West kept the playoffs in their sites with the win against Wyoming Area scoring the first 35 points sending the game to the mercy rule to start the second half.

Spartan’s Sr. QB Kack Crossin would score two times via the ground adding two more TD’s via the air with receptions from Sr. WR Ali Muhammad. Muhammad would haul in a 42 yarder and 46 yarder from Crossin.

So. RB George Simms also added a first half TD capping a scoring drive with a two yard jaunt to the gold zone.

Wyoming Area would get two second half scores from Fr. RB Matt Kintz.

Kintz scored on a five yard rumble recording their first score after Sr. TE Ryan Carr set the Warriors up deep in Spartan’s territory with a big pass reception from Sr. QB Peter Adonizio.

Kintz second TD came on a 17 yard scamper to paydirt.

Valley West added a second half score when second string QB Jr. Connor Haggerty juanted 24 yards to the gold zone on the bootleg down the far sideline.

The Spartans can now focus on the Coughlin Crusaders and a playoff bid in the 2008 NE Subregional playoffs.

With a win at Wilkes-Barre Memorial against host Coughlin this coming Saturday night the Spartans can all but pack their bags for a trip to the Lehigh Valley for the first round of the playoffs.

W-B Memorial has been kind to Spartan’s Head Coach George Curry over the years. Of course, he wasn’t daunting the maroon and gold colors back then, but during Berwick’s state title run the Dawgs called W-B Memorial HOME during the playoffs and were basically unbeatable there.

  • Spartan’s playoff bid becoming a reality

    Valley West mauls Billport 49-14

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

KINGSTON- Spartans Stadium in Kingston saw its final game of the season Friday night as the Wyoming Valley West Spartans played host to the Williamsport Millionaires under an October sky filled with a harvest moon.

It was the Spartan’s final home game of the 2008 campaign, but after reeling off their fourth consecutive win with the 49-14 drubbing of Billport, the NE regional playoffs are becoming much a reality in Spartan land.

Valley west moved to 5-3 with the win and if they can record wins at Wyoming Area in week nine and W-B Coughlin in week ten, a playoff bid will become certain.

Of course, those two games will be tough challenges, but after being written off by just about everybody except the Spartan faithful, the “Maroon and Gold” are in the thick of the playoff race.

Williamsport would take the early 7-0 lead in this one after the Spartans muffed a punt that was recovered by the Millionaires. A few plays later Sr. QB Michael Person found Sr. WR Sha’had Harris on a 35 yard reception to the gold zone. Jr. K Jordan Fredo nailed the PAT with the score Billport 7 Valley West 0.

The Spartans would reel of the next 42 points sending the game in to the mercy rule starting the second half.

Scoring for Valley West was Sr. Jack Crossin with two TD’s on the ground and a TD reception to Sr. WR Ali Muhammad. Jr. DB Connor Haggerty returned a interception 42 yards to paydirt. Sr. Dave “Rino” Ryncavage added two TD’s via the rushing game and Fr. QB Eugene Lewis capped the scoring on the night for the Spartans on a one yard keeper in the fourth quarter.

With the win the Valley West moves to 5-3 and will travel to Wyoming Area this coming Friday night to try and tackle the Warriors.

After the game I had a chance to get a word with coach Curry, interested in finding out if he follows the playoff points race via the internet.

“I really don’t know how to turn on a computer. I’m 67 and really don’t care much about that stuff. I do things the old way, if I need that kind of info I will get it from Zlotek,” chuckled Coach Curry.

For those of you that don’t know, Matt Zlotek is one of the assistant coaches on the Spartans staff and apparently a bit more computer literate then coach Curry.

  • Comets win thriller on foot on sophomore kicker

Armetta nails 25 yarder to down Delaware Valley

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

CLARKS SUMMIT- A sunsplashed Saturday afternoon at “The Pit” in Clarks Summit was the stage for a battle of district two powers as the Abington Heights Comets played host to the Delaware Valley Warriors.

Abington Heights would come in with a record of 5-1 while Delaware Valley came in 4-2 with their playoff hopes on the line

The hero on the day would be a sophomore from Abington Heights in the form of Charlie Armetta, who booted a 25 yarder with only .5 seconds left in the game.

Delaware Valley would take the early 6-0 lead with Dan Saita capping the drive on a four yard jaunt. The Warriors would go for two after an Abington Heights penalty, but failed to execute the conversion.

Abington Heights took the lead with 6:14 left in the second quarter as So. QB Mike Beamish capped a scoring drive on a two yard keeper. It was Beamish’s first play under center, coming in on a rushing down. Armetta nailed the PAT with the score Comets 7 Warriors 6.

Sr. RB Eric Ofcharsky was the next to find paydirt for the Comets on a four yard jaunt to the goldzone. Armetta, again nailed the PAT to pad Abington Height’s lead.

Delaware Valley got back on the scoreboard with only :34 seconds left in the first half as Saita scored on a four yard dash. Saita also added a two point conversion knotting the score at 14 a piece.

There would be no more scoring until the fourth quarter, it was then the football gods shined their little light on the Comets as Delaware Valley muffed a punt and Abington Heights recovered deep in DV territory.

Abington Heights would take advantage of the Warriors miscue with Ofcahrsky finding the goldzone on a six yard rumble. Armetta booted the PAT and AH had the lead with 8:36 left in the game.

Del Val would answer with Saita scoring his third TD of the afternoon on a one yard jaunt to paydirt. Jr. K Anthony Cavallaro nailed the PAT knotting the score at 21.

Saita would score all of Delaware Valley’s points except for the one PAT made by Cavallaro, but it was not enough to keep Abington Heights from winning it in thrilling fashion.

Abington Heights would march right down the gridiron on their last drive of the game setting Armetta up for the winning 25 yard boot.

With the win Abington Heights moved to 6-1 and is in control for a district 2 class AAA playoff birth.

Delaware Valley, on the other hand, have certainly hurt their chances for a playoff birth, especially with the Valley West win over Hazleton Area on Friday night.

Both Valley West and Delaware Valley are 4-3, but with the Spartans win against HA they gained 180 playoff points and are currently above Del Val in the playoff race in AAAA.

  • Spartans cage Cougars

Valley West hands Hazleton Area first loss with 24-14 win

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

HAZLETON Harmon-Geist Stadium in downtown Hazleton is a place that has not been so kind to the Valley West Spartans and their legendary head coach George Curry.

The Cougars came into the ballgame with two consecutive wins over Valley West since “King George” made the move to Spartan land.

In fact, Rocco Petrone and his Hazleton Area Cougars have been on the winning side of Curry coached teams since 2004.

Petrone and Hazleton Area downed Berwick in their final game of 2005, knocking Berwick out of the playoffs. It was Curry’s final season in Dawgtown.

Hazleton Area also gave the Spartans their first loss in 2006 and 2007 with Curry at the helm. Valley West came in to both of those games unbeaten.

Tonight, the tides turned and Valley West was the one knocking off the unbeaten as the Cougars came in with an unblemished record, only to have the Maroon and Gold destroy it on homecoming night at Hazleton Area.

The Spartans found themselves down 7-0 in the first quarter as Jr. Chad Nicholas returned a punt 55 yards to paydirt. It would be the only score of the half.

Valley West moved the ball quite a bit in the first half, but had nothing to show for it due to turnovers and penalties. On the defensive side of the ball the Spartans only allowed one first down the entire first half.

The Spartans would come out in the second half reeling off 24 unanswered points while only giving up one score which came late in the fourth quarter.

Scoring for the Maroon and Gold were So. George Simms, Sr. Ali Muhammad, Sr. Dave Ryncavage and Sr. Bill McGuinness on a 30 yard FG.

With the win the Valley West Spartans have climbed right back in the quad A playoff race, which may be a surprise to some, but not to all.

“We know we have to run the table for any kind of shot to qualify for the state tourney, so we must stay focused. As seniors we must lead the way, we have made the playoffs in the last two season, we don’t want to lose that streak in our final year.” said Jack Crossin from the Spartan’s locker room.

As for those local sports writers that claimed Valley West will now have to play the spoiler role, please tally up the playoff points, because your story is the only thing that’s spoiled NOW!

  • Spartans reach 500 mark

Valley West records 49-19 win at Stroudsburg

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

STROUDSBURG- The Wyoming Valley West Spartans packed up their gear and heading to the Pocono Mountains Friday night to tackle the Stroudsburg Mountaineers.

The “Maroon and Gold” would start slow, but finished strong with a 49-19 rout of the Mounts at Ross Stadium.

The game was a tune up for what will be the Spartans biggest game of the season as they travel to undefeated Hazleton Area this coming Friday night.

Sr. QB Jack Crossin got Valley West started at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter capping the scoring drive on a 14 yard scamper. Sr. K McGuiness nailed the PAT with the score Spartans 7 Mounts 0.

Stroudsburg took no time knotting things up as Sr. Jermaine Davis took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to paydirt exploiting the Spartans special teams. Sr. Jared Anthony booted the PAT with the score all tied at seven.

It would be the closest the Mounts would come on the night with the Spartans reeling off 27 unanswered points.

Crossin would find paydirt on two more rushing TD’s and Jr. QB Connor Haggerty threw a 20 yard TD strike to Sr. WR Ali Muhammad at the end of the first half.

Crossin added his one TD pass with a 13 yard strike to Sr. TE Josh Kozich to open the scoring in the third quarter giving the Spartans the 34-7 lead.

The Mounts, finally got back on the scoreboard at the start of the fourth quarter with Jr. Jeremy Desir capping the scoring drive on a four yard juant.

Valley West answered back as Jr. Dayquwn Johnson reeled off a 12 yard scamper to cap the scoring drive.

Stroudsburg final score of the night came with 6:11 left in the ballgame with Jr. QB Chris Hagelgans finding Jr. WR David Palmer-May on the TD strike.

The Spartan’s Dayquwn Johnson ended the scoring on the night with a three yard jaunt to the goldzone.

Both teams would use quite a few second string players in the fourth quarter and the underclassmen on both sides played very well.

With the win the Spartans reach the 500 mark for the first time in the 2008 campaign.

If they plan on having any chance of making the D2 quad A sub-regional playoffs they will have to be one game over 500 after week 7. That means a win at Hazleton Area on Friday night.

Valley West has NOT played a flawless game yet, does that mean they are due?

  • Colossal classic at Wilkes-Barre Memorial

Pats down Coughlin 44-43 in six overtimes
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
WILKES-BARRE- Its been around since the 1930’s it has housed high school football teams of the Wyoming Valley for nearly eighty years now and Saturday night it may of just seen its most classic football game of all time.

Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium, a place were some of our football gods call home stirred up the echoes this weekend to the tune of a six overtime slugfest as the Coughlin Crusaders played host to the Pittston Area Patriots.

The Pats held a 7-0 lead at halftime courtesy of RB Chris Price who ripped off a 60 yard run to paydirt at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter.

Coughlin tied things up on their opening series of the second half with RB Matt Shimshock scampering 29 yards to the goldzone to cap the scoring drive.

The Crusaders would take the lead later in the third quarter as QB Matt McClosky scored on a bootleg right rumbling 16 yards to paydirt.

The Patriots tied things up at 14 with only 47.6 left in the regular session. Tight end Sam Parente hauled in a pass in the flat and rumbled 11 yards for the score. The PAT was good with the score 14-14 and the classic was on!

Coughlin would score first in the first OT with RB Justin Koslosky rushing eight yards to the goldzone. Kicker Joe Rother nailed the PAT forcing the Pats to put up seven on their offensive series.

The Patriots would get a touchdown from WR Carmen Lopresto on a 14 yard fade pass in the far left corner of the goldzone. The PAT by Paul Gattuso was good as we headed to the second OT.

Price would rip off a 16 yard rush to find paydirt in the second OT. Gattuso, again nailed the PAT and now Coughlin was forced to get seven to send it to a third OT.

McClosky would score on a six yard dash, Rother nailed the point after and we headed to the third OT of the night.

Coughlin was forced to attempt a field goal in the third OT as Rother nailed it from 25 yards out. If PA could score a TD on their next series the game would end with a Pats win.

Instead, Coughlin’s defense rose to the occasion forcing Gattuso to nail a 26 yard FG to send it to yet a fourth OT. As history would have it Gattuso, the boy with the golden foot, split the uprights.

Ronal Grayson scored for the Patriots in the fourth OT, this time the PAT was missed and Coughlin could now put a lid on it with a score and the point after attempt.

Coughlin’s McClosky did find the goldzone on a four yard juant, but the football gods insisted on more action as the PAT was no good and we headed to a fifth OT with the score all knotted at 37.

Believe it or not, both quarterbacks were intercepted in the fifth OT. Grayson would get the pick for the Pats and inturn McClosky, who plays both ways for the Crusaders, recorded the pick for Coughlin. We now would move to the sixth OT.

Price would find the goldzone for the Patriots on a 12 yard scamper, Gattuso nailed the ever important point after and again Coughlin was forced to score and nail the PAT to force the game into what would of been the seventh OT of the night.

The Crusdaders did score, but the point after missed and the Patriots stormed the field. Actually, many players from both teams just fell to the gridiron and lay there after be completely exhausted.

I have watch football for thirty some years now and I can honestly say this was the best game I ever had a chance to see.

Kudos to the members of both these football programs, there was no quit in anybody tonight. Ya, I know its and old cliche, but it was a shame one team walked away with a loss in this one.

You can say what you want about W-B Memorial Stadium, some just don’t care for the place. After a game like this how could you say this stadium does not house some football gods. Hey everyone needs a place to sleep. Looks like PA and Coughlin woke a few up tonight.

As I said on our live audio going into the sixth OT, OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Nelly, what a game!

  • Berwick hands Valley West old fashion butt kicking

KINGSTON- If you were to tell the people of Berwick that their team would be 4-0, ranked statewide and crushing quad A teams three years after legendary coach George Curry departed. First thing you would do, is ask if they had been drinking.
Well, break open the fine wine because all of the above is quite true.
After starting the season 3-0 with wins over Crestwood, Tunkhannock and Wyoming Area, the Dawgs were to be tested for the first time as they rolled into Kingston to square off against Valley West. Tested, well if that’s the case, they passed with flying colors, downing the Spartans 34-7 in front of a capacity crowd.
Valley West opened the scoring with Sr. RB Dave Ryncavage capping things off on a two yard jaunt to paydirt. It would be the Spartans lone TD of the night despite Ryncavage having his best game of the season.
Berwick would roll off 34 unanswered points enroute to a blowout. To Bewick’s credit they went after it and capitalized on the Spartans miscues. That is the sign of a championship team. Great teams keep you down and don’t let you up.
The deciding factor in the game came on the Dawgs first play from scrimmage in the second half. Sr. RB Evan Crisman took a handoff and scampered 71 yards to the goldzone. With the score the Dawgs took a 27-7 lead and for all intensive purposes crushed any hopes for a Valley West comback.
Sr, Brandon Welch got Berwick on the board after running back the kick after the Spartans scored. Welch would rumble 90 yard to paydirt. Valley West held a 7-6 lead after the PAT was missed, but that may have been the Dawgs only miscue of the night.
The Dawgs also got two TD’s from Sr. Zach Powell, both long receptions from Jr. QB A.J. Mihaly. The first a 75 yarder, the second a 84 yarder on a screen play in which the Spartans missed a few tackles to say the least.
Berwick added their final score of the night as Sr. John Jola capped the scoring drive on a one yard jaunt to the gold zone with the final score Dawgs 34 Spartans 7.
“We got beat by a better team out there tonight, said Spartan Head Coach George Curry after the game.
Berwick has always had great athletes and coach Campbell is doing a great job with that program.”
After following Berwick football for about 30 years, it was a weird feeling tonight. Not for just me but a few others also. A.J. Mihaly, who was a main cog in the Berwick machine tonight is household name in Dawgtown. In fact his father was an assistant to Curry during his tenure at Berwick and to this day is still coaching their under Campbell.
Curry can remember when A.J. was just a toddler running around the back yard during summer barbecues. Now he’s a junior in high school on a state ranked Berwick team.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but it’s surely a different feel from the other side of the fence.
Good luck Dawgs, on your quest for Hershey gold.
  • Pigskin finally bounces Spartans way

Valley West downs Del Val 26-7 to record first “W”
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
KINGSTON- Wyoming Valley West Spartan fans have not had much to cheer about in the first two games of the season. That all changed Friday night as the Spartans recorded their first win of the season against previously unbeaten Delaware Valley.

If Valley West’ season is to turn around and the Spartans are to make the playoffs you can tag the 4:53 mark of the 3rd quarter of week 3 as the turning point.

It was then that the football gods shined their light on the maroon and gold. Jr. DB Connor Haggerty recovered a Del Val fumble and rumbled with the pigskin 48 yards to paydirt. It was the defining factor in the game and if Valley West builds on it, the Del Val miscue could be the defining factor in their season.

Not only did Valley West take a 20-7 lead, but more importantly they gained the confidence they lacked in week one and week two. That could be a scary thought for upcoming opponents. The Spartans with confidence could spell WIN quite a few more times this season. Someone once said the game is 80 percent mental, they named the super bowl trophy after that guy.

This one would start with Delaware Valley driving deep into Spartan’s territory on the opening drive only to be turned away with no points.

Valley West, on the other hand would have the ball for only about three minutes but scored quickly as Sr. QB Jack Crossin set his offense up deep in Del Val territory on a big run. Sr. RB Chris Hettes would cap the scoring drive on a three yard jaunt. Sr. K Bill McGuiness nailed the PAT with the score Spartans 7 Warriors 0.

The Warriors would tie things up early in the 2nd quarter with Jr. QB Edwin Balcarcel scoring on an 11 yard keeper. Jr. K Anthony Cavallaro booted the PAT with the score all knotted at seven.

The Spartans would take the lead for good with 2:22 left in the first half as So. TE Kevin Bond hauled in a 12 yard TD reception from Crossin. McGuiness booted through the point after with the score Spartans 14 Warriors 7.

Haggerty would recover the fumble a rumble to the gold zone for the Spartans next score and Crossin would score a mop up TD with 8:17 left in the game on a one yard keeper.

The Spartans defense rose to the occasion in the second half and with Del Val forced to pass, Valley West blitz was ferocious.

“We said at halftime, we had to rush the QB. We kept bringing pressure from the outside trying to keep their QB in between the hash marks. With no place to run on the outside we could attack and we did, said Sr. LB Dave Ryncavage.

“I wrote on the chalk board tonight, make an impression. I told the team you paint a picture of yourself, what to you want to paint? Who wants it? They say we are soft, now let’s go change that image and paint a new picture,” Valley West Head Curry said he told his team before the game.

In the picture next week, the Berwick Bulldogs.

You hear people talk about it all the time, Curry will be judged at Valley West by state titles won and that may be true for some people.

Just the same, Berwick Head Coach Gary Campbell Jr. will be judged by wins over George Curry. Next week Campbell and his Dawgs head to Spartans Stadium a place Berwick Sports Talker, Eddie Walker has tabbed “The House of Horrors.” Valley West will be looking to dish up another scary treat this coming Friday night.

    Until then, happy football.

  • Comets down Valley West 21-7

Abington Heights keeps Spartans searching for first win

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
After the Spartans opening night loss to Scranton a win in week two was crucial to making the playoffs. The only problem with that was one of Pennsylvania’s class AAA ranked teams stood in the way, in the form of the Abington Heights Comets.

The Comets wanted nothing more but to keep Valley West from securing the first win of the season and that’s exactly what they did, handing the Spartans their second consecutive loss to the tune of 21-7.

Valley West would take the early seven point lead at the beginning of the 2nd quarter as Sr. QB Jack Crossin hooked up with Sr. WR Ali Muhammad for a 36 yard TD strike. Sr. K Adam Fleisher nailed the PAT with the score Spartans 7, Comets 0. It would be the only time Valley West would see the lead.

Abington Heights would score on their very next series with Sr. WR Ross Cadman hauling in a 13 yard TD strike from Sr. QB Pat Griffin. So. K Charlie Armetta nailed the PAT with the score knotted at seven.

The Comets would take the lead for good after a blocked punt by Cadman that was recovered by Jr. Sean Gretz deep in Spartan territory. Griffin capped the go ahead scoring drive on a one yard keeper. Armetta, again nailed the PAT with the score Comets 14, Spartans 7.

Abington’s final score came with only 9:10 left in the game with So. RB Paul Gallagher capping an impressive scoring drive on a two yard jaunt to the gold zone. Armetta added the PAT with the score Comets 21 Spartans 7.

Valley West was outplayed in the 2nd half, unable to move the ball against the Abington Heights defense.

“We just didn’t play in the second half, we have a lot of guys playing both ways and again we were cramping up in the second half. It looked liked we were out of gas toward the end of the game,” said Spartan Head Coach George Curry after the game.

“As for the cramping, I don’t understand it. We even bought those potassium drinks and keep them on ice. It’s going to be a long season if we can’t go hard all four quarters, added Curry.

The road won’t get any easier for the Spartans next week as the host 2-0 Delaware Valley, which is likely to be the toughest team they will face this season.

After Del Val its Berwick at home, there is no way Valley West wants to go into that one winless, but after the last two weeks its certainly possible.

  • Meyers unable to slow down Hawks

Hanover Area puts up 41, in solid win
    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
HANOVER TWP- If you walked into Hanover Area’s football stadium in the early 90’s, you had the treat of watching one of the states top class AA teams.
The Hawks would win the state title in 1990, defeating Canevin Catholic 20-19 in overtime. Hanover Area made it back to the title game in 1991, but was downed by the Aliquippa Quips 27-0. New England Patriot, Ty Law played in that game for the Quips, he went on to win a few super bowls with the Pats.

Aliquippa went on to be a powerhouse in class AA, winning the title again in 2003 and runner-up in 2000. The Qips were also runner-up in 1988, the first season the state playoff format was installed. Aliquippa was Berwick’s first victim in the Dawg’s historic stretch.

Since 91, Hanover Area has not been quite as fortunate, winning just two district titles. One in 96 and the other in 2005. In 05 the Hawks actually made it all the way to the state quarterfinals, only to be defeated by eventual runner-up Wilson, who lost to South Park in the finals.

In 2005, the buzz returned to Hanover Area with that playoff run. Now with head coach Ron Hummer, who has deep roots with the Hawks, guiding this team, playoffs could be something that is expected each season in coal town.

The Hawks sputtered a bit in week one, losing to highly touted Lake-Lehman 17-14 in a squeaker. That was not the case tonight in their home opener against W-B Meyers as all engines were firing to the tune of 41 points to Meyers 13.

Hanover Area found the scoreboard first after blocking the opening punt from Meyers. Rob Rival was the Hawk to get the paws on the pigskin. From their Sr. QB Rich Colorusso only needed one play to scamper 15 yards to paydirt on the keeper. The PAT was no good with the score Hanover 6 Meyers 0.

Meyers would tie things up early after they also blocked a punt with Sr. Joe Drevenak picking up the pigskin a scampering 30 yards to the gold zone. The PAT was blocked with the score all knotted at six.

From here on out it was all Hanover Area’s “Big Blue” with TD’s from Sr. WR Jack Danko, Jr. RB Mike Redick, Jr. WR Tomas Cabera and Sr. FB Kyle Halesey. You certainly could say they spread it around a bit!

Meyers would add a late score with the the final score Hanover Area 41 W-B Meyers 13.

With the win the Hawks move to 1-1 with Holy Redeemer their next combatant. Meyers is still looking for their first win of the season as the go to 0-2 and will travel to Nanticoke Area next Friday evening.

  • Scranton hands Valley West opening night loss

    Spartans go down 26-20

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

Opening night 2008 for the Wyoming Valley West Spartans, new turf, a big home crowd and thoughts of an unbeaten season.

All was right in front of the Spartans as they kicked off the pigskin against the Scranton Knights on Friday night in Kingston. That is until Scranton decided to pull off one of the biggest upsets in years, a loss that could effect this Spartans team and their dream season.

Valley West did everything they could to give Scranton the opportunity to pull off the upset and to Scranton’s credit they took that opportunity. Something then many teams have had the chance to do, but Scranton went for it and took it, plain and simple.

“We just were not in it tonight, I thought we were going to break through a couple times. Every time we gained momentum, we had a penalty that crushed it. You can’t win football games, while making mental mistakes,” said coach Curry from his office after the game.

“Everyone thought we would roll over this Scranton team. I told the kids all week, Scranton is much better then you think and we have to be prepared. We practice against the QB waggle all week long and then we go out there tonight and get beat by it,” added Curry.

Scranton would score the first points after only their third touch of the ball game with Sr. QB Fabby Desir scampering 44 yards to paydirt. The PAT was good with the score Knights 7 Spartans 0.

Valley West would tie things when Sr. QB Jack Crossin broke free on a keeper rumbling 25 yards to the gold zone. The PAT was good with the score Spartans 7 Knights 7.

Scranton took the lead at the 7:13 mark of the 2nd quarter on a 54 yard TD reception from Sr. QB Brian Dunleavy to Sr. WR Shane Glacken. The PAT was once again good with the score Knights 14 Spartans 7.

The Spartans would try to crawl back in it as they scored with only 1:40 left in the 1st half with Sr. RB John Hettes capping a scoring drive on a nine yard jaunt. The PAT was missed and Valley West was still down by one with the score Knights 14 Spartans 13.

Scranton scored their final TD of the night with Dunleavy capping the scoring drive on a QB keeper. This time Scranton missed the PAT, but padded their lead to the tune of 20-13.

The Spartans would come back and tie things up one more time with Crossin again breaking free on the bootleg. The play went 72 yards to paydirt, without Crossin being touch after he broke through the defensive line. The PAT was good and we were tied up once again with the score 20-20.

Scranton would break the backs of the Spartans on the kickoff after the TD with a return all the way back to the Spartans 2 yard line. The play was really the defining factor in the game and the Spartans never recovered from it.

Desir would find the paydirt two plays later, the PAT was blocked but Scranton had they lead for good with 8:40 left in the game.

Valley West would drive into Scranton territory late in the game, but a fumble recover by the Knights salted the win away.

Scranton Sr. RB Fabby Desir was very impressive throughout the game, in a sense he ran all over the Spartans. Which really was not a surprise if you think about it. Desir ran all over Valley West in last season’s contest also.

The only difference last year was the outcome of the game. A botched snap on a punt set the Spartans up for the win in 2007 over Scranton. The Knights were only one play away from the upset last season, this time to their credit they finished what they started.

As for the Spartans, hate to say it but the playoffs start next week at Abington Heights. The road doesn’t get any easier after AH either, with Delaware Valley and Berwick on the Horizon.

Time to go get it gentleman!

  • Harrisburg vs. Valley West (Scrimmage)

The battle of George, Spartans vs. Cougars

Curry and Chaump match up squads in hard hitting scrimmage

    By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

MOUNTAINTOP- George Chaump and his Harrisburg Cougars football squad rolled into Mountaintop this morning for their last scrimmage of 2008. They would take on the Wyoming Valley West Spartans, who last season traveled to Harrisburg and were outmatch a bit by the big quad A school.

Chaump, who is in his early 70’s has coach at Marshall University, from 1986-89 and Navy from 90-94. He also coach in the NFL as a running back coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Anytime you can match up some old school football coaches with some talented athletes, its a treat and today was just that. Tasty, for some hungry football fans.

The scrimmage would have quite a bit of good hitting, there were a few testy times and the intensity was very good for a scrimmage. It didn’t take to long for both teams to feel each other out and decide they didn’t like each other.

Valley West and Sr. RB Dave Ryncavage would find the gold zone on the first series, but a penalty flag on a weak hold would negate the screen play that went 40 yards to paydirt.

The Spartans defense was stellar on Harrisburg’s first series of ten plays, only allowing a net ten yards. The defense would record two sacks, with Harrisburg recording only one first down, a ten yard pass on their opening play.

Harrisburg would score on their next series during a broken play, with the QB going about 40 yards to paydirt on the keeper.

The Cougars would, again find paydirt on their next series of ten plays. This time, a long pass play of about 50 yards or so.

Valley West would rally on their next ten plays. With the first team of both squads still in, the Spartans would find the gold zone twice.

So. RB George Simms broke free on a option from Sr. QB Jack Crossin to set the Spartans up for their first score at Harrisburg’s 5 yard line. From their, two runs from Ryncavage capped the drive.

The Spartans next score would come with Crossin running the bootleg and scampering down field. Just right as he was to be tackled at about the 20 yard line, he pitches the ball back to Jr. WR Rasheed Williams and Rasheed takes its the rest of the way.

That play highlighted the scrimmage and would be the last score for either first team offense.

Not a bad scrimmage for the Spartans, who really hung in with Harrisburg and really played better then the Cougars. If it wasn’t for the two big plays from Harrisburg, they would not of had many total yards. Those two big plays, sent them over 100 yards, but other then that, not much.

“We played them tough today, and we rested a starter or two here today. That’s a tough Harrisburg team and we didn’t give up much, “said coach Curry after a warm day on the gridiron.

Looks like Valley West is certainly ready for the 2008 regular season. They really have had the best two scrimmages since Curry has been at the helm and they look confident, not cocky but confident.

The Spartans will host the Scranton Knights this coming Friday night. If all goes well, the game will be played at Spartans Stadium on the new surface, but there is no guarantee the field will be ready.

If the field is not ready, it looks like Pittston Area’s field will be the Spartans home gridiron this coming Friday night.
