  • Schuylkill Haven Defeats Shenandoah Valley to Remain Undefeated

    millsweek82016After eight weeks of football games, the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes had not yet suffered their first loss, and that trend continued for them into week nine. The Hurricanes battled a gritty Shenandoah Valley Blue Devil team on Friday night at Rotary Field. In the end The Hurricanes proved to be too strong.

    The Hurricanes entered the scoring column just three minutes into the game on their first possession via a 60-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalyan, followed by an Evitts’ PAT. Haven’s next set of downs also had the same result. It ended with a six-yard touchdown run from Mike Kalyan, which made the score 14-0 halfway through the first quarter.

    The Blue Devils’ offense had a tough time getting going on Friday night and three interceptions by the Hurricane’s defense didn’t help matters. The first of the three interceptions came late in the first quarter by defensive lineman Connor Raymond on a deflected pass. The turnover set the Hurricanes up with good field position, which they capitalized on thanks to a three-yard touchdown run from Danny Lozada to bring the score to 21-0.

    The second of the Hurricane’s interceptions came on Shenandoah Valley’s next possession, a play that saw cornerback Preston Gehring pick off a pass and return it 37 yards for the score. Gehring’s touchdown made it 28-0 after the first quarter.

    Schuylkill Haven tacked on three more touchdowns in the second quarter on touchdown runs by Lozada, Brish of 55 and 89 yards respectively, and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Lozada to Gehring. The halftime score favored the Hurricanes at 49-0.

    Brish reached the end zone again in the third quarter on a run from 42 yards out to make it 56-0. Shortly after Brish’s touchdown, sophomore running back Jacob Luckenbill had one of his own from the goal line, which brought the score to 63-0 after three quarters of play.

    The final score of the game came from back up quarterback Josh Kalyan of a four-yard touchdown run in the fourth to bring the score to its resting place at 69-0.

    Schuylkill Haven travels to Blue Mountain next week to face their rivals, the Blue Mountain Eagles.
    Shenandoah Valley hosts Mahanoy Area.

    Notes: Schuylkill Haven’s Daniel Lozada rushed for 134 yards on six carries and a score. Kobe Brish rushed for 133 yards on three touches and two touchdowns. Mike Kalyan also rushed for two touchdowns on five carries for 97 yards.

    Shenandoah Valley’s Noah Allegretta went five for 19 passing for 30 yards, with Michael Vinas on the receiving end on four of those passes for 30 yards total.

  • Schuylkill Haven Remains Undefeated After Rout of Minersville

    millsweek62016For the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes, the 2016 season thus far has been defined by their strong defense. This week, the Hurricanes offensive line proved that they have also been a vital reason for the success of the team. Minersville’s defense has been notable to this point in the season as well, but on Friday night at Rotary Field, Minersville’s defense had their work cut out for them.

    Schuylkill Haven got off to a quick 7-0 start just three minutes into the game thanks to a ten-yard touchdown run by Preston Gehring followed by a PAT from Dawson Evitts. Mike Kalyan reached the end zone four minutes later on a touchdown run of his own, to bring the score to 14-0.

    Schuylkill Haven’s quarterback Daniel Lozada scored next for the Canes, on a 68-yard quarterback keep. Lozada’s touchdown made the score 21-0 heading into the second quarter.

    The Hurricanes maintained their momentum through the second quarter as they saw a 49-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalyan, bringing the score to 28-0. Schuylkill Haven then tacked on two more touchdowns in the second as Lozada and Gehring each reached the end zone again. Schuylkill Haven took a 42-0 lead into halftime.

    The theme for the Hurricanes continued through the second half as well, thanks to a third quarter touchdown from Kobe Brish, making the score 49-0 at the end of three. A pair of touchdown runs from Jacob Luckenbill in the fourth brought the score to its resting place at 63-0.

    Schuylkill Haven (7-0) travels to Panther Valley next week to face the Panthers. Minersville (2-5) hosts Mahanoy Area.

    Minersville’s Jared Yoder rushed for 11 yards on three carries, while Aaron Beach and Josh Hayle each ran for eight yards on two touches.

  • Schuylkill Haven Defeats Mahanoy Area to Stay Unbeaten

    mattweek52016The matchup last year between the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes and the Mahanoy Area Golden Bears went in favor of Mahanoy. It was a game in which they captured an early lead and held on to it throughout the game. This year Schuylkill Haven was determined to reverse those roles, and did so by earning an early lead and never looking back on it.

    The Hurricanes strong start, stifling defense, and a multitude of turnovers by Mahanoy Area, aided them en route to a 54-0 victory over the Golden Bears. On this night, the 1991 Schuylkill Haven football team watched their Alma Mater play, as they were honored for the 25th anniversary of their PIAA Class A State Championship.

    The Hurricanes struck the board first via a three-yard touchdown scamper by Preston Gehring, followed by an extra point from Dawson Evitts, to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. A pass from Mahanoy Area’s quarterback, Mark Lawrence, on his team’s next possession was intercepted by Haven Safety Danny Lozada and returned for touchdown, to make the score 14-0. A 15-yard touchdown run by Kobe Brish and then another Evitts PAT gave the Hurricanes a 21-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the first.

    The Hurricanes piled up four more touchdown runs in the second quarter from Matt Kalyan, Brandon Koch, Mike Kalyan, and Danny Lozada. Schuylkill Haven took a commanding 48-0 lead into halftime.

    The final touchdown of the game was scored in the third quarter by Schuylkill Haven’s Brandon Wasser to bring the score to 54-0, which remained throughout.

    Schuylkill Haven (6-0) hosts Minersville next week.
    Mahanoy Area (3-3) hosts Marian.

    Notes: Schuylkill Haven’s Kobe Brish rushed for 107 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, Danny Lozada rushed for 51 yards and a score, and Mike Kalyan rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown. Gehring, Ma. Kalyan, Koch, and Wasser also rushed for a touchdowns.

    Mahanoy Area’s Tyler Clewell rushed for 39 yards on 16 carries and Mark Lawrence rushed for 20 yards on 8 touches.

  • Schuylkill Haven Defeats Tamaqua in Battle of Unbeatens

    mattweek22016The matchup Friday night at Rotary Field between Schuylkill Haven and Tamaqua resembled previous games that featured the two schools, as the game was physical and highly competitive. The defenses came to play in this one, with Schuylkill Haven prevailing as the Hurricanes came away with a 24-7 victory.

    Both teams got off to a slow start, as there was no scoring in the first quarter of play. The Hurricanes struck the board first in the second quarter however on an 89-yard punt return by senior Preston Gehring that gave the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead going into halftime.

    Schuylkill Haven got the ball to start the second half and used a big run by Gehring on the first play from scrimmage to set up a 23-yard field goal for kicker Dawson Evitts. The Evitts’ field goal gave the Hurricanes a 10-0 lead early in the third quarter.

    The Blue Raiders responded shortly after, with a touchdown of their own to cut the lead to 10-7. A play in which quarterback Thad Zuber connected with wide receiver Zeke Wassel to cut the lead to three, midway through the third quarter.

    It was all Haven from that point on as they punched in two more scores and didn’t allow the Blue Raiders to score again.

    Up three points with 10 minutes remaining in the game, Schuylkill Haven used a seven-minute, 13-play drive to all but end the hopes of a Tamaqua victory. The long drive was capped off by a 13-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalyan.

    The Hurricanes defense forced the Blue Raiders into a three and out on their next possession. When the Hurricanes got the ball back, they scored on a 42-yard touchdown run by freshman Kobe Brish with just over one minute remaining in the game.

    Schuylkill Haven (3-0) travels to North Schuylkill next week to face the Spartans.

    Tamaqua (2-1) hosts Panther Valley.

    Notes: Schuylkill Haven’s Mike Kalyan rushed for 92 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown. Preston Gehring rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries with a punt return touchdown, while Kobe Brish rushed for 50 yards on five carries and a touchdown.

    Tamaqua’s quarterback Thad Zuber went 9-21 for 138 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Zeke Wassell caught three balls for 90 yards and a score, while running back Nick Breiner rushed for 42 yards on 16 carries.

     

  • Schuylkill Haven Uses Strong Defense to Top Jim Thorpe

    millsweek12016Last year the matchup between Schuylkill Haven and Jim Thorpe went in favor of the Olympians, as they defeated Schuylkill Haven 28-7. This year was a different story, as the Hurricanes led by a bevy of backs and a strong defense defeated Jim Thorpe by a score of 31-14.

    Schuylkill Haven’s defense was ultimately the deciding factor in this game as they held Jim Thorpe to -7 rushing yards throughout the contest. A pair of long touchdown passes however, from Jim Thorpe’s quarterback Brendan Carroll, kept the Olympians close for most of the game.

    Both teams got off to a slow start on Friday night at Rotary Field, as the score was  0-0 through one quarter of play. The offense picked up in the second quarter when Schuylkill Haven running back Preston Gehring opened up the scoring with a 38-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, giving the Hurricanes the early 6-0 lead after a blocked extra point.

    Jim Thorpe responded on their next play from scrimmage, with a 76-yard touchdown pass on a flea-flicker from quarterback Brendan Carroll to Nick Rosahac to take a 7-6 lead. The Hurricanes then used their running game to manipulate a 12-play drive finished off by a two-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalyan to give them a 12-7 lead, after a failed conversion attempt, with 6.7 seconds remaining in the half.

    Schuylkill Haven struck first in the second half on a 15-yard touchdown run by Gehring to give them a 18-7 lead after a failed conversion attempt. The Olympians answered yet again with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Rosahac to O’Toole. The pass went through the hands of a Schuylkill Haven defender and into O’Toole’s, bringing them within 4, at 18-14.

    Schuylkill Haven quarterback Daniel Lozada responded for the Hurricanes on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 76 yards for the score, giving them a 24-14 lead late in the third. The Hurricanes didn’t look back from that point on, adding another score with 6:13 remaining in the fourth on a 12-yard touchdown run from Mike Kalyan to make the score 31-14.

    The Hurricanes travel to Lehighton next Friday to face the Indians. Jim Thorpe hosts Marian next week.

    Notes: Schuylkill Haven’s Preston Gehring rushed for 150 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns and Mike Kalyan rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Kobe Brish had an interception.

    Jim Thorpe’s Brendan Carroll went 3-7 passing for 90 yards and a touchdown while Nick Rosahac also got some time at quarterback and went 4-7 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown.
