East running backs could steal the spotlight in Altoona

If there’s a recent trend that one can discern from the last couple PSFCA East/West All-Star games, it’s that the team with the better rushing attack has won the game.  And I’ll admit it:  I am a huge proponent of utilizing a quality ground attack in an all-star game despite the minimum passing requirements and […]

1,000-yard backfield duos aren’t as rare as you think

When a running back hits 1,000 yards in a season, it’s kind of a big deal.  At least it used to be.  Now, the standard for an individual successful season on the ground appears to be 2,000 yards rushing in a season.   But what if two running backs on the same football team hit […]

Nebraska ought to be ashamed of itself

The news that the University of Nebraska rescinded its scholarship offer to West Scranton running back Shawn Bodtman was stunning, to say the least.   The rationale for pulling the scholarship was also stunning, giving the timing in which it came to light.  In fact, the rationale offered by the Nebraska assistant coach didn’t offer […]

North Penn

Simply put, North Penn is a traditional District 1 powerhouse, and is always in the running for playoff berths and District championships.  But you knew all that.  What you may not know is that the three-time Eastern finalist Knights have gone 75-17 since the start of 2001, good enough for a winning percentage of .815, […]

Riverside

Don’t look now, but Riverside is ready to rock and roll some District 2 “A” competition.  Moving down from “AA,” where the Vikings lambasted Dunmore during the regular season, to “A” with the likes of Lackawanna Trail and Old Forge only spells trouble for the competition.  And, keep in mind that in 13 games, this Riverside […]

Trinity

12-0 and feeling on top of the world, the Shamrocks were stunned by Delone Catholic 25-0 in the District championship game last year.  Whether or not the Shamrocks can put together two straight 10-win seasons remains to be seen, but the green and white does return Christian Kuntz (10 career INTs) to the defensive backfield, […]

Parkland

The defending “AAAA” PIAA runners-up have a solid cast of characters returning to Allentown.  Nine defensive starters return in 2008 from a unit which pitched a scoreless streak of 28 consecutive quarters.  Only one other PIAA affiliate had a 20-quarter scoreless streak last season.  Jaleel Clark is a stud wide receiver and free safety for […]

Jersey Shore football preview

JERSEY SHORE – With its first trip back to the District IV championship game in nearly 10 years, the Jersey Shore Bulldogs were feeling pretty good last season.   This year’s version of the orange and black aren’t feeling too bad, either. The Bulldogs – who will begin this year in the Pennsylvania Heartland Athletic Conference – boasted a […]

Mount Carmel

Is this the year Mount Carmel finally gets back to Hershey?  It is an even-numbered year, after all.  And the Red Tornadoes boast 27 seniors, including 3,900-yard career passer Marcus Wasilewski.  There appears to be a certain swagger back in Mount Carmel, you know, the swagger which helped them reach six PIAA finals in nine […]

Garnet Valley

Minus quarterback Eric Van Wyk, the Jaguars return their entire starting backfield from a team which finished 13-2 and as PIAA runners-up to Thomas Jefferson.  Tim Keyser, Jared Bonaquisti, and Chris Palaio combined for well over 2,500 rushing yards last season.  Wingback Keyser was also GV’s leading receiver with nearly 800 yards on over 40 […]

Lancaster Catholic

Bruce Harbach has a heck of a football team returning this football season, beginning with one of the most accurate passers returning to the Lancaster-Lebanon League in Kyle Smith.  The left-handed hurler completed nearly 67 percent of his passes for just under 2,600 yards to go along with 26 touchdowns a season ago.  Offensive lineman […]

Bishop McDevitt

McDevitt has always had the athletes and the talent.  They lose all-purpose running back Mike Jones and his 23 touchdowns scored, but the Crusaders return Kyle Koncar, who has thrown for nearly 3,000 career yards during his time as the field general.  Will 2008 see the Crusaders bring home another District 3 championship to Market […]

Marian Catholic

The Colts are always tough, and the defending District 11 “A” champs return yet another solid football team.  Led by 257-game winner Stan Dakosty, the seven-time District 11 champions are poised for another run.  Sure, Pius X, Minersville and Schuylkill Haven might stand in the way, and both return solid football teams in their own […]

Wyoming Valley West

Any time you meet up with a George Curry-coached football team, you know you’re going to be in for a battle.  The all-time winningest coach in Pennsylvania history loses workhorse Matt Kolojechick and his over 2,000 rushing yards, but there always seems to be another capable running back in the fold.  Will Curry be able […]

Schuylkill Haven

Zach Barket absolutely lit the world on fire for the Hurricanes last season, totaling 2,518 yards and scoring over 30 touchdowns.  The career 4,310-yard rusher looks to spearhead the Haven offense for the third straight season, and nearly the entire team returns from last year’s 7-5 record and berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs.  Will […]

Harrisburg

The Cougars seemingly lost everybody from its inaugural District 3 championship team last season, which is hard to believe considering the talent Harrisburg usually fields.  But George Chaump is a pretty good one when it comes to reloading, and there’s talk about Harrisburg’s defense being the forte of this edition of the silver and black.  […]
