SPRINGFIELD: For the final time in the 2012 regular season the Springfield Cougars stepped out on their home field on Friday for a matchup with the Penncrest Lions and after a slow start the Cougars turned it up in the second half to come away with a 30-14 Central League victory and their sixth victory in a row.
Joe Garland gave the Lions an 14-0 second quarter lead with two touchdown runs that covered two and seven yards. But then Cougars who were outgained by the Lions 162 t0 47 in the first half cut the lead into half with a one yard touchdown plunge by Rob Murphy.
In the second half, the Cougars dominated the Lions out gaining them 235 to 32 and out scoring them 23-0.
Mike Dougherty tied the game up when he rumbled 56 yards. Issac Peyton then gave the Cougars their first lead with a one yard plunge. Aaron Coyne added to the lead with his highlight reel 64 yard touchdown run.
The Cougars capped the scoring with a safety in the fourth quarter.
With the win the Cougars move on to 6-1 and will travel to Ridley for a showdown with the Green Raiders in a showdown of the two top Central League teams
