Berwick Area
Sophomore Quarterback Jared Pierce made his first start for the Dawgs and he was 5 of 13 passing for 40 yards and one touchdown. Most of the night Pierce handed the ball off to Alec Ladonis and Lou Hampton, both backs combined for 256 yards and a pair of scores. On defense the Dawgs had several questions going in to this year and had to replace many starters from last year. The Dawgs picked up right where they left off allowing only 56 yards of total offense.
Berwick’s next opponent is Tunkhannock.
Dunmore
The story of the night was senior running back Michael Perry who rushed for 182 yards (one touchdown) on 21 carries. Perry eclipsed the 5,000 yards mark in his career. The Bucks shut out the Spartans 21-0.
The game pitted legendary coaches (Dunmore’s) Jack Henzes and (Mid Valley’s) Frank Pazzalia.
Dunmore travels to Carbondale Area.
Abington Heights
The talk this year for Abington Heights is the line. The Comets rushed for nearly 300 yards and most of that came from Paul Gallagher who rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns.
Early in the second quarter Gallagher scored on an 11-yard run and the Comets led 13-0. Hazleton Area Donald Pollitt’s 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown cut the Comets lead to 13-6.
Both teams would score and the Comets led 20-12. But Gallagher’s next two touchdown runs of 56 and 34 yards put the game away.
Abington Heights cruised for the 33-18 win.
Next up for the Comets is Wyoming Valley West.
Northwest Area
With the victory over Lourdes Regional 33-6 they scored three of the five touchdowns were from 35 yards or longer. Two of the touchdowns came from Steve Merth who ran for a 55-yard touchdown. He also had a 48 yard punt return in the third quarter. The other was a 35-yard pass from Gunner Majer to Jeremie Rittenhouse.
Next up for Northwest Area is Wilkes-Barre GAR.
