Annual competition draws record number of entries
Edinboro University’s Communication and Media Studies Department recently announced the winners of its seventh annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School journalism competition at an awards ceremony on April 12.
The annual contest recognizes journalistic writing among high school juniors and seniors (private, public or home-schooled).
“The number of entries for this year’s competition was the largest to date,” said Melissa Gibson, associate professor of Communication and Media Studies. “We had entries from across Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York so the competition this year was fierce.”
In total, 185 entries were received from students across the state, according to Gibson. Entries were evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of faculty members and student staff members from the university’s campus media organizations. Cash prizes were provided by Gazette Newspapers, WCTL, and YourErie.com, JET-TV, and Fox 66.
Roughly 200 students and high school teachers attended the awards ceremony as part of High School Journalism Day, an event that featured keynote speeches by Sean McCracken, Erie Times-News, and Joseph Cephas, vice-president for public affairs for the Independent Electric Contractors in Alexandria, Virginia.
“The department is delighted to again recognize outstanding high school journalism and to put those students in direct contact with top professional journalists for a full day of activities. I believe this event is an important indicator of the overall quality of Edinboro University’s journalism program and underscores our ongoing efforts in community outreach and student recruitment,” said Anthony Peyronel, chairperson of the Communication & Media Studies department.
EasternPAFootball.com would like to congratulate EPA intern Austin Miorelli of Tamaqua High School for placing third in the Sports Story category.
