It is hard to believe that we are now 7 weeks into the high school football season. The 2009 Playoffs are right around the corner and the competition is heating up. Here’s a wrap up of District 2 action from this past weekend.
In a marquis matchup which lived up to its billing, DUNMORE stayed unbeaten with a thrilling overtime victory 21-14 over a talented 5-2 team from SCRANTON PREP. The Bucks pulled out to an early first half lead, but a determined Cavalier bunch made the second half their game forcing the fantastic finale. The Bucks continue to rule the roost in AA, while the Cavaliers should be a contender in AAA competition.
In other action, NORTH POCONO is proving to be a AAA juggernaut courtesy of an impressive 49-8 victory over SCRANTON. The Trojans, now 6-1 and coming into this weekend’s competition following a monumental win over local AAA rival, ABINGTON HEIGHTS, NORTH POCONO proved that they will clearly be a force in the remaining weeks and come playoff time. Speaking of ABINGTON HEIGHTS, the Comets certainly got back on track by derailing DELAWARE VALLEY 40-7. Ironically, it was DELAWARE VALLEY who dealt NORTH POCONO their only setback this season. ABINGTON HEIGHTS possesses much power and explosive players and will certainly make noise at playoff time as well. A NORTH POCONO – ABINGTON HEIGHTS match up down the road is a serious possibility. Add undefeated DALLAS and SELINSGROVE to the mix and you have some mighty fine AAA teams in Pennsylvania Football.
In A action, while OLD FORGE has easily handled all competition before this weekend, CARBONDALE gave the Blue Devils a great game and but for a missed PAT the Chargers and Blue Devils may have been another overtime thriller. However, the PAT just did not go CARBONDALE’s way and OLD FORGE remains undefeated in a squeaker. LAKELAND got back on the winning track with a 28-20 win over RIVERSIDE, who despite a few victories, has really struggled this season despite the excellent Eastern Semifinal finish for the Vikings in 2008. Also, VALLEY VIEW keeps its winning ways with a big 53-0 win over MONTROSE. MID VALLEY continues its impressive season with a 28-8 victory over HOLY CROSS. WALLENPAUPACK, a AAAA contender, held off a determined and smaller AA squad in WESTERN WAYNE 29-26. Finally, WEST SCRANTON outlasted HONESDALE 63-42 in a real shoot out.
Good Luck to all teams in the upcoming Week No. 8.
See You On The Sidelines!
