The Inter-Academic League, a compilation of private, college preparatory high schools in and around Philadelphia, boasts one of the state’s returning 2,000-yard passers from the 2009 season.
That quarterback, John Loughery of William Penn Charter, is also a potential Division-1 prospect.
Loughery has, to date, received interest from six Division-1 schools – Boston College, Connecticut, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Rutgers – according to Rivals.com. Ivy League representative Harvard is also listed on Loughery’s profile.
None of the schools listed above has extended Loughery an offer at present.
Loughery, a 6’5, 210-pound athlete, erupted last season, completing 177-of-312 passes for 2,066 yards and 18 touchdowns. He threw for 175+ yards in a game six times; 200+ yards five times; and set a career high in passing yards (337) to end the 2009 season against Germantown Academy.
Loughery doubled his completions and passing yardage totals from his sophomore season (88 and 999, respectively), and tripled his total of touchdown passes (he only threw six scoring passes in 2008).
Perhaps most impressively, Loughery had a hand in 19 of the Quakers’ 28 total touchdowns in 2009. In addition to his 18 passing scores, he also ran for a touchdown. That means he had a hand in 67.86 percent of Penn Charter’s touchdowns.
Loughery has thrown for 3,065 yards to date, and would become the first quarterback from an independent, non-PCL, non-PIAA representative to throw for 4,000 yards or more in a career since Haverford School’s Bryan Savage threw for 4,250 yards from 2000-2003.
Penn Charter finished 5-5 overall last season in the Inter-AC and averaged 19.3 points per game.
