MALVERN, Pa. – Malvern Prep Athletic Director Kurt Ruch announced today that Dave Gueriera, former assistant football coach with the Friars and most recently the head football coach at West Chester East High School, will be the School’s new head football coach.
“First of all, I want to say that we had an outstanding pool of candidates for this position, and that speaks volumes about the reputation of our program,” said Ruch. “We felt that Dave has the right combination of knowledge, experience, passion and connection to the Malvern community to lead our program. And more than that, he is a fantastic person who family-oriented and will be a great role model for our boys.”
Gueriera served as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator for Malvern in 2009 and 2010 under then head coach Kevin Pellegrini. He then moved on to take offensive coordinator positions at Harriton High School and Episcopal Academy before becoming West Chester East’s head coach in 2014. At East, Gueriera snapped a 10-year playoff drought for the Vikings and reinvigorated the program’s booster club and connection to football alumni. In three years, his win total of 15 matched the win total for the previous eight years.
Gueriera addressed the returning Malvern Prep football players this morning, stressing his excitement and commitment to the team.
“I’m home,” Gueriera said, beginning his remarks today before noting his experience coaching at Malvern and revealing that he attended the School for seventh and eighth grade before attending Cardinal O’Hara for high school.
“I’m honored and thrilled to be your coach. We are going to play fast and physical. I’m an emotional guy, and I expect you to play with that same emotion,” he continued. “Most importantly, know that I am here for you. I put you first. And you will do the same for each other. It is about the team.”
Gueriera lives in West Chester and is the vice president of operations at Wharton Benefits Group, a leading independent employee benefits firm located in Malvern. He replaces Aaron Brady, who led the Friars to a 23-9 overall record and 12-3 Inter-Ac League mark in three seasons.
