pdweek22013Malvern Prep’s Defense shone bright once again and this time got much needed help from the offense in a convincing 31-10 win over Glen Mills yesterday afternoon at the Pelligrini Family Athletic Complex.

Even though the Friars (2-0) committed three turnovers of their own that led to no points by the Battlin’ Bulls (0-2), the two fumbles recovered by the Friars led to 10 points.

Already leading 7-0 on a Matt Brown 33 yard touchdown pass from Alex Hornibrook, Brown then scored on a three yard run with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter to increase the lead to 14-0. The touchdown was set up when Jordan Majors recovered a Daquan Dow fumble. On the very next possession, Quarterback Donte Coates fumbled. It was recovered by Hunter Paulus on the Bull 23. The drive stalled at the four and Jonathan Dollfus kicked his first field goal of the season, a 21 yarder that increased the lead to 17-0. Dollfus also converted all four extra points on the day.

From there the defense took over. Led by Linebacker Hunter Paulus and Defensive End John Nassib who clogged up the front line they held the Battlin’ Bulls to a net total of six yards rushing on 20 carries and 158 yards of total offense. Coates was 13-22 for 152 yards. Tyesheed Freeman had four catches for 66 yards.

Paulus also got in on the scoring from his Fullback slot on a bust of the middle 19 yard run with 3:30 to play in the third period. Paulus finished with 76 yards on 10 carries. Troy Gallen (13 carries 90 yards) also added a seven yard run to close out the Malvern scoring.

Glen Mills 10 points came from a Jacquan Beal 22 yard field goal and a 80 yard kickoff return by DeAndre Johnson.

Glen Mills must now regroup to face Upper darby next week in their home opener while Malvern has a week off to prepare for a clash with LaSalle Saturday night the 21st at Plymouth-Whitemarsh.
