FORT WASHINGTON—The last time Germantown Academy won a share of the Inter-Academic Athletic League (Inter-Ac) title in 2004, senior captains Kyle McCloskey ’17, Pat McGettigan ’17, and Matt Gorman ’17 were just around the age of six and only dreaming of making the big play in their backyards.
Dreams became reality on Saturday as the senior trio, along with junior co-captain Tanner Long ’18 and a huge supporting cast, made big play after big play to lead the Patriots to a nail-biting 17-14 victory over archrival Penn Charter on GA-PC Day, held on Saturday, November 12, 2016, before an overflow crowd at Carey Stadium, which allowed GA to clinch a share of the Inter-Ac League title with Malvern Prep.
“We have three goals,” said GA Head Coach Matt Dence following the 130th game of the oldest consecutive prep school football rivalry in the country that dates back to 1887. “One is to win the day, the second is to win the Inter-Ac, and the third is to beat PC. We had two check marks before, but on Saturday we checked all three. That’s what this senior class has done. They have brought us to a point where we were able to check all three of our goals. To do that with this crew is very special. Matt Gorman is just a winner. Pat McGettigan is just a winner. Kyle McCloskey is just a winner.”
