Penn Wood DE Shawn Oakman verbally commits to Penn State
The Penn State Nittany Lions have landed one of Pennsylvania’s top defensive line prospects in the 2011 recruiting class.
Shawn Oakman, a 6’9, 245-pound defensive end, verbally committed to Penn State today, according to Scout.com. Oakman had seven total scholarship offers (including Penn State) – UCONN, North Carolina State, Pitt, Rice, South Carolina and Temple.
Schools like Cincinnati, Michigan, Purdue, Rutgers, Virginia and West Virginia expressed interest in the Penn Wood High School senior-to-be, but did not extend a scholarship offer.
Oakman is coming off of a phenomenal junior season – he finished with more than 100 tackles and had an impressive 17 sacks and four forced fumbles.
As a junior, Oakman was part of a Patriot defense that allowed 140 points on the season, holding six of 12 opponents to eight points or less, with two shutouts. Penn Wood finished 8-4 overall, allowing an average of 11.7 points per game.
