Offensive Player of the Week
Kolbe Burrell – SJ Prep – RB – Senior
The Hawks’ reliable back is often the forgotten man in their prolific, high-powered offense, but this weekend he proved his worth and then some. With passing supreme junior quarterback Kyle McCord sidelined with an injury, it was the Hawks’ ground-attack that paced the offense, in a come-from-behind, 43-26, victory. Burrell finished with a career-high 217 yards rushing on 27 totes. He scored three touchdowns in the process. His biggest run came late in the first quarter with his trailing, 14-0. Burrell sped through the left-side for 65 yards placing the ball inside the Vikings 5-yard line. His three scores covered 2, 3, and 5 yards, respectively. The latter of these end zone visits put the game out reach with 1:41 left in the contest.
Defensive Player of the Week
Tyrone Fowler – Bishop McDevitt – DE – Senior
The rangy, high-motored Fowler spearheaded a Lancers’ defense that kept a potent Dunmore ground attack reasonably in control for the most of the evening. The Lancers won, 28-13, to advance to the Class 2A Quarterfinals next week versus Richland Township. Fowler had a total of nine stops (6 solos), including two sacks. He also notched three other TFLs, as he was force along the line of scrimmage throughout.
Special Teams Players of the Week
Sahmir Hagans – SJ Prep – KR – Junior
In the Hawks’ 6A City Final tilt with Northeast, the Vikings had just seized some momentum with a score early in the fourth quarter. They had pulled within, 29-20, of the mighty Hawks, and were a defensive stop away from possibly making it even more interesting. The versatile Hagans would have none of it, tho. No need for the Hawks’ vaunted offense to respond, as Hagans took the ensuing kickoff and zipped 86 yards to paydirt. The touchdown pushed the Hawks’ lead back out to, 36-20, and they stayed in control the rest of the way. This moment helped the Hawks secure their fourth straight 6A City title and sixth such triumph in seven seasons.
