Offensive Player of the Week
Kaelin Costello – Archbishop Wood – RB – Junior
Costeelo, who shows good quickness and slippery tendencies, continued his late-season surge with 129 yards on just 12 carries. Twice he found the end zone on runs of 4 and 32 yards, respectively. Costello has become quite the compliment to another junior rusher Cardel Pigford (12-80-1 TD) and this duo has the Wood rushing attack peaking at the right time.
Co-Defensive Players of the Week
Thomas Pomponi – LB – Senior & Shane Collier – LB – Junior – Arch. Wood
This rugged and steady duo were active throughout as the Vikings ran away from Southern Lehigh, 41-7, in a PIAA 5A Quarterfinal tilt this past Friday night. Southern Lehigh’s ground attack entered the contest with impressive numbers, but Pomponi (14 tackles; 6 solos) and Collier (13 stops; 8 solos, sack, TFL) saw to it that the Spartans never really got proper traction in the ground game. The tandem headlined a Vikings’ defense that held the Spartans to 3.4 yards per carry. This is the 10th time in eleven PIAA seasons that the Vikings have reached at least the state semifinals. Incredible!
Special Teams Players of the Week
Sahmir Hagans – SJ Prep – KR – Junior
Once again is with the slithery Hagans making his imprint on special teams for the Hawks, Last week, he returned a kickoff for a touchdown that helped the Hawks distance themselves from Northeast in the District-12 6A Final. This week he did it twice on punt returns. In the second quarter he sped 52 yards to make the score, 24-7, Hawks. He increased their lead to 38-10 when he raced 48 yards with a third quarter punt. Hagans exploits in the return game are beginning to become a weekly feature for the Hawks as they head into the PIAA 6A Semifinals.
