For the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes, the 2016 season thus far has been defined by their strong defense. This week, the Hurricanes offensive line proved that they have also been a vital reason for the success of the team. Minersville’s defense has been notable to this point in the season as well, but on Friday night at Rotary Field, Minersville’s defense had their work cut out for them.
Schuylkill Haven got off to a quick 7-0 start just three minutes into the game thanks to a ten-yard touchdown run by Preston Gehring followed by a PAT from Dawson Evitts. Mike Kalyan reached the end zone four minutes later on a touchdown run of his own, to bring the score to 14-0.
Schuylkill Haven’s quarterback Daniel Lozada scored next for the Canes, on a 68-yard quarterback keep. Lozada’s touchdown made the score 21-0 heading into the second quarter.
The Hurricanes maintained their momentum through the second quarter as they saw a 49-yard touchdown run by Mike Kalyan, bringing the score to 28-0. Schuylkill Haven then tacked on two more touchdowns in the second as Lozada and Gehring each reached the end zone again. Schuylkill Haven took a 42-0 lead into halftime.
The theme for the Hurricanes continued through the second half as well, thanks to a third quarter touchdown from Kobe Brish, making the score 49-0 at the end of three. A pair of touchdown runs from Jacob Luckenbill in the fourth brought the score to its resting place at 63-0.
Schuylkill Haven (7-0) travels to Panther Valley next week to face the Panthers. Minersville (2-5) hosts Mahanoy Area.
