It is certainly strange to think of hearing the words “West Catholic” and “question marks” entering any season, as the Burrs have enjoyed four consecutive trips to the PIAA AA semifinals and a PIAA championship in 2010.
But that’s exactly where West Catholic finds itself – with questions – entering the 2012 season. Heavy graduation losses and the near-closure of the school whose football team is 90-21 overall since the start of the 2004 season might be to blame for the blue and white falling outside of the top-5 of some polls and preseason rankings.
West Catholic does boast a Division-1 recruit on the offensive line – Jaryd Jones-Smith – and the Burrs’ other projected linemen have notable size, but lack experience. Junior Greg White is the team’s top returning rusher and Ron Womack returns at receiver after being used sparingly there in 2011.
Gone to Imhotep Charter, however, is David Williams, the Burrs’ primary offensive centerpiece who last season rushed for 1,938 yards on 301 carries. Only time will tell if the Burrs can maintain its perch as kingpin of the AA programs in eastern Pennsylvania.
