STROUDSBURG- The Wyoming Valley West Spartans packed up their gear and heading to the Pocono Mountains Friday night to tackle the Stroudsburg Mountaineers.
The “Maroon and Gold” would start slow, but finished strong with a 49-19 rout of the Mounts at Ross Stadium.
The game was a tune up for what will be the Spartans biggest game of the season as they travel to undefeated Hazleton Area this coming Friday night.
Sr. QB Jack Crossin got Valley West started at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter capping the scoring drive on a 14 yard scamper. Sr. K McGuiness nailed the PAT with the score Spartans 7 Mounts 0.
Stroudsburg took no time knotting things up as Sr. Jermaine Davis took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to paydirt exploiting the Spartans special teams. Sr. Jared Anthony booted the PAT with the score all tied at seven.
It would be the closest the Mounts would come on the night with the Spartans reeling off 27 unanswered points.
Crossin would find paydirt on two more rushing TD’s and Jr. QB Connor Haggerty threw a 20 yard TD strike to Sr. WR Ali Muhammad at the end of the first half.
Crossin added his one TD pass with a 13 yard strike to Sr. TE Josh Kozich to open the scoring in the third quarter giving the Spartans the 34-7 lead.
The Mounts, finally got back on the scoreboard at the start of the fourth quarter with Jr. Jeremy Desir capping the scoring drive on a four yard juant.
Valley West answered back as Jr. Dayquwn Johnson reeled off a 12 yard scamper to cap the scoring drive.
Stroudsburg final score of the night came with 6:11 left in the ballgame with Jr. QB Chris Hagelgans finding Jr. WR David Palmer-May on the TD strike.
The Spartan’s Dayquwn Johnson ended the scoring on the night with a three yard jaunt to the goldzone.
Both teams would use quite a few second string players in the fourth quarter and the underclassmen on both sides played very well.
With the win the Spartans reach the 500 mark for the first time in the 2008 campaign.
If they plan on having any chance of making the D2 quad A sub-regional playoffs they will have to be one game over 500 after week 7. That means a win at Hazleton Area on Friday night.
Valley West has NOT played a flawless game yet, does that mean they are due?
