ASHLAND – Tamaqua and Wyomissing met for the first time Friday night. Even though they were unfamiliar with one another, the proximity of these two foes resulted in three common opponents. All the connecting of the dots played out in a 3A state quarterfinal matchup. Tamaqua controlled the line of scrimmage all night long and came away with a bruising 20-10 win over Wyomissing Area.
Running back Nate Boyle led the offensive for Tamaqua. Nate and the ground attack keyed a strong second half comeback. A stout defensive effort by Tamaqua held a powerful Wyomissing running game in check all game long.
“To hold a team like this to three points of offense is an incredible job,” said Tamaqua Head Coach Sam Bonner. “We went with a different look tonight, we went with a 5-3 base defense and we also did some shifting that caught them off guard”. Star Running Back Nate Boyle said “When we get momentum, it’s hard to stop our offense, and we got momentum in the 2nd half.”
Wyomissing’s best drive of the game was the first time they touched the ball. Unfortunately the drive stalled and it led to a field goal and a 3-0 lead.
Tamaqua came right back and a quick score had them in front
The second quarter was a defensive struggle until just before halftime. The Wyo defense made a huge play. We went to halftime with Wyomissing up 10-6.
Momentum of the entire game shifted on the Spartans first second half possession. Tamaqua stopped Wyomissing on a fourth down at mid field. Nate Boyle then took control.
Nate Boyle’s final TD sealed the Tamaqua win 20-10 over Wyomissing.
