The first week of regular season games got off to a great start. The steamy hot days of August cooled off just in time for the Friday night openers on Labor Day weekend. Most teams showed almost mid season form in these hard fought contests.
Although opening night is almost pure guess work, last weeks predictions went pretty well. North Penn, Ridley, Interboro and Strath Haven all came through as predicted. The sole blemish to those prognostications was 40-37 Downingtown West win over Penncrest. In that contest a last minute interception by Whippet defensive back Bobby Muhlville in the end zone saved the night for Downingtown West in this offense only shootout.
The last three years this future teller has a 106-39 prediction record and with 2009 opening at 4-1 there may still be a little luck left to call on for future predictions.
On paper this week should not be tough for anyone to predict. If preseason rankings are to be believed this is cup cake weekend. Number One ranked in Ed Thomas’ Southeastern Pa top ten http://www.havenfootball.net/Ed%20Thomas%20Wk%202.html is Neshaminy. The Red Skins will entertain Hatboro Horsham a 7-0 victor over Frankford last Friday. Neshaminy has too many weapons to defend and they include running back Ricky Williams, Corey Majors and Bryan Dean. The Hatters just don’t match this fire power.
Prediction: Neshaminy 38 Hatboro-Horsham 10
Another interesting match pits 2008 powerhouse Malvern against third ranked LaSalle. This group of Explorers will be tough to control. Lead by QB Drew Loughery and receivers Connor Hoffman and Sam Feleccia look for LaSalle to avenge last years loss to Malvern Prep.
Prediction: LaSalle 27 Malvern Prep 14
