Week 7 notes:

Freshman runningback Khair Bowman of ESN rushed for 200 yards and 2 td’s in a loss to Dieruff.  Bowman is the 4th District 11 player in the last 3 years to have a 200 yard game as a freshman.  The other 3 are currently all the chart.

Jordan Gray of Nazareth (250 yards in 2011), Austyn Borre of Pleasant Valley (245 yards in 2012) and William Casella of Schuylkill Haven (221 yards in 2011).  Casella, just a junior joined the “3,000 yard” club for his career with 3,116 yards.  Gray, also a junior, is just ahead of Casella with 3,233 yards.

Jim Thorpe’s duo of Ryan Saunders and Deonte St. Hill combined to rush for 294 yards and all 4 touchdowns in a 26-0 win over previously unbeaten Mahanoy Area.  Saunders rushed for 232 yards and 3 scores to up his season totals to 1,082 yards and 12 td’s.

Pine Grove’s Ryan Heim is now the District 11 rushing leader with 1,326 yards.  Heim ran for 211 yards and 4 td’s last week to lift the Cardinals to 7-0.  He surpassed last years total of 1,143 yards (also the total that Kevin Kerstetter had in 1988) and Austin Donmoyer’s 1,165 yards in 2004 to move into 6th place at the school for a single season.

Dylan Mahmod of Mahanoy slips to 2nd in the District with 1,250 yards followed closely by Niko Petrone of ESS with 1,236 yards.  Petrone rushed for 240 yards and 4 t’ds against Pleasant Valley and moved by 12 other 3,000 yard rushers on the District 11 chart, including 2 from his own school.  They are Eddie Helm (PME), Rashid Sayles (ESS), Rich Guman (Beca), Darrius Webb (Beca/Freed), Anthony Davis (ESS), Joey Killar (Saucon), Ryan Hluschak (NL), Robert Bennie (Str), Ovid Goulbourne (Easton), Dale Beck (NL), Anthony Gonzalez (Lib), Jason Figura (JT) and Sean Hoffman (Wil).  Petrone now has 3,427 yards for his career and also joins the “40 td” club with 43 career td’s.  Ra’Von Burton of Catty is following Petrone up the charts with his 3,335 career yards.

Saquon Barkley of Whitehall rushed for 219 yards and 3 td’s against Central Catholic to up his season totals to 1,005 yards and 17 td’s scored.  Kareem Williams of Parkland had over 200 yards rushing (218) for the 2nd time this year.  Nick Savant of Saucon Valley now has 2,291 yards for his career which places him in 6th place all-time at the school.  Heim now has 31 career td’s, Phil Vass of Bangor has 30 and Austyn Borre of Pleasant Valley and Savant have 25.  Cole Barnhardt of Williams Valley scored 4 td’s in a win over previously unbeaten Tri-Valley.  Eight players have now gone over 1,000 yards.  NOTE: Ryan Heim is 6th in the State with his 1,326 yards.  Mahmod is still 2nd in the State with 22 td’s.

Dieruff’s junior Chris Marks is now the District 11 leader with 1,227 yards.  Zack Bradley of Catasauqua is a close 2nd with 1,204 yards.  Ian McCole of Shenandoah Valley is closing in fast with another 300+ game.  McCole now has 1,171 yards for the season.  Stephen Sedesse of Williams Valley falls from 1st to 4th and now has 1,130 yards.  For the second week in a row (both wins) Shane Graspy of Blue Mountain threw for over 200 yards.  Graspy threw for 235 yards in a 31-28 win over Schuylkill Valley after throwing for 233 yards in a win over Hamburg.   Graspy now has 20 career td passes while Southern Lehigh’s junior Travis Edmond has 25.  Bradley leads Sedesse by one for the District lead in td passes, 18 to 17.  Frank Dangello tied his own single season school record with his 12th td pass of the year.  Luke Hohenstein of PM East threw for 242 yards in a 28-22 loss to Pleasant Valley while PV’s Brandon Leap threw for 226 yards in the win.  Jeff Charles of Whitehall had his first career 200 yard passing game when he threw for 207 yards against Central Catholic.

District 11 receiving leader Cody Miller of Williams Valley was injured on the first play of the game against Tri-Valley and didn’t return.  Miller still leads the District with 649 receiving yards and 12 td catches.  Jacob Del Priore of Southern Lehigh leads the District with 37 receptions and is now the Spartan’s all-time reception leader with 117 catches.  Jeff Smillie had 116 receptions from 2008-10.  That also moves him by Zach Bogoly (113 catches) into 2nd place all-time in the Colonial League.  His 1,804 yards is now 5th best in the Colonial League, moving him ahead of Wilson’s Justin Scerbo, who had 1,792 yards from 2005-08.  RJ Sarjian of PME caught 9 passes vs Stroudsburg to tie the school record.  Charles Lanier caught 9 passes in a game in 1997 to set the record.  KJ Williams of Liberty caught 2 passes for 113 yards and a td to go over 2,000 yards receiving in his career.  Williams now has 120 receptions for 2,042 yards and 26 td receptions.  KJ’s yardage puts him in 10th place all-time in the District, just edging Wade Williams of Pius X who had 2,026 yards from 2005-07.  Williams and Del Priore are just outside the top ten in catches.  Paryss Marshal of Catasauqua now has 79 catches for 1,568 yards for his career.  The 2 Rough Riders that are ahead of him were former teammates.  Matt Andrews had 81 catches for 1,598 yards and 16 td’s (1994-96) while head coach Tom Falzone had 86 catches for 1,583 yards and 18 td’s(1993-95).  Marshal of Catasauqua caught 3 more td passes vs Pen Argyl and now has 10 for the year and 26 for his career, tying him with KJ for the District lead among active players.  That also puts them in a tie for 8th place all-time in the District with Larry Zimmerman of Pine Grove (2009-11) and Owen Daniel of Williams Valley (2010-12).  The career numbers that Del Priore, Williams and Marshal have achieved so far, are some of the best ever in the District.  Put that into perspective with the stats that Kevin Gulyas of Central Catholic put up in just his senior year (2011).  **122 catches for 2,047 yards and 27 td catches**.  Matt Tuerk of Nazareth and Marshall are 2nd and 3rd in the District with 35 and 31 catches respectfully.  Marshall and Sarajian are 2nd and 3rd in reception yardage with 598 and 546 respectfully.  NOTE: Miller is tied for 3rd in the State with his 12 td catches.

THE PAST AND THE PRESENT:  Tyler Hope of Tamaqua rushed for a school record 350 yards and scored 4 td’s in a win over Schuylkill Haven.  Hope broke his Uncle Jim’s record of 331 yards set in 1989 vs Shenandoah Valley.  Uncle Jim would go on to finish his junior year with 930 yards rushing and 10 td’s.  Jim was coached that year by former Raider Wayne Schickram.  Schickram ironically held the old school record when he rushed for 258 yards against Shenandoah in 1976.  Schickram was also a junior and ended up going over 1,000 yards for the season.  As a senior, Hope would rush for school record 1,509 yards while playing for 1st year head coach Whitey Williams.  Hope broke George Barron’s record that stood for 28 years.  Jim would also tie the single season school record with his 18 td’s.  Jack Reese (1927), Joe Rhubright (1928) and Barron (1962) all scored 18 td’s in a season.  Hope would rush for 2,496 yards in his career, breaking Schickram’s record of 2,449 yards by 47 yards.  Alex Zukus would come along in the year 2000 and pile up 3,462 yards in his career (2000-03) to become the Raiders current career rushing leader.
