Week 9 notes:
RUSHING: Jordan Gray of Nazareth scored his 50th td last week.  Niko Petrone rushed for 355 yards and scored 5 td’s in a win over Hazleton.  The 355 yards breaks James Mungro’s school record of 336 yards that he set in 1995.  Ironically, Mungro would rush for exactly 336 yards in his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts.  Petrone’s 5 td’s ties the school record held jointly by Jerry Alspach (1985), Mungro (1995) and himself that he had last year.  Petrone is second in the District with 1,656 yards and needs 155 yards to reach 4,000 for his career.  Petrone bumped Rashid Sayles from the top five at ESS.  Sayles had 1,647 yards in 1987.  District leader Ryan Heim of Pine Grove rushed for 154 yards in a win over Tri-Valley enabling him to leapfrog 4 Cardinals to become the single season rushing leader at the school.  Heim now has 1,681 yards, breaking the single season school record of 1,669 yards held by Nick Frantz (2002).  Frantz also had seasons of 1,582 yards in 2001 and 1,560 in 2003.  Heim scored 4 td’s last week giving him 25 for the season which ties him for the school record with Cameron Conrad who had 25 td’s in 2011.  Conrad rushed for 1,533 yards that year and now moves down to 5th place all-time at Pine Grove.  Heim’s 25 td’s leads Dylan Mahmod of Mahanoy by 2 td’s for the District lead.  Heim and Schuylkill Haven’s William Casella both have 39 career td’s.  Sophomore, Austyn Borre of Pleasant Valley now has 31 career td’s.  Nick Savant of Saucon Valley moved by Lyle Kares and John Killar and into 3rd place all-time at the school with 2,782 yards rushing.  Phil Vass of Bangor rushed for 262 yards and all 3 td’s in a loss to Northwestern.  Vass now holds down spots 2 and 7 for rushing yards in a single season at Bangor.  Harry Hall of Northwestern became the first sophomore Tiger to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.  Christian Gretzinger of Palisades squeezes by former Pirate Owen Breininger into 5th place for a single season at Palisades.  Gretzinger now has 1,165 yards, while Breininger had 1,160 yards in 2001.  James Wheeler of West Mifflin still leads the State in rushing yards and td’s even though he had 14 yards and no td’s in a 35-0 loss to Thomas Jefferson.  NOTE: Ryan Heim is tied for 7th in the State with his 1,681 yards and is 5th in the State with his 25 td’s.

PASSING: Dieruff’s Chris Marks takes over the District lead with 1,619 yards.  Marks threw for 264 yards against Stroudsburg to slide into 3rd place all-time for a single season at Dieruff.  Marks moved by former Huskies Joe Ocelus, Scott King, Ross Moore and Rocky Butler.  Marks has 19 td passes this year and now sits in second place at Dieruff.  Rocky Butler holds the school record when he threw 20 td passes in 1996.  Catasauqua’s Zack Bradley is a close second in the District with 1,618 yards (3rd best at Catty).  Bradley is now Catty’s all-time leading passer with 3,838 yards and 56 td passes.  Barry Kennedy (1973-76) previously held the records with 3,773 yards and 54 td passes.  Bradley leads the District with 25 td passes.  Pleasant Valley’s Brandon Leap went over 4,000 yards in his career and now has 4,137.  Leap’s 44 td passes puts him in a tie with Tom Keer of Lehighton (1981-84) and Kyle McFarland of Salisbury (2004-06) on the District list.  Mark Smith of Allen (1971-73) and Nick Todero of Pine Grove (2009-11) each threw for 43 td passes in their careers.  Nick Cook of Northampton became the 4th K-Kid to go over 3,000 yards for his career and now has 3,015.  Junior, Travis Edmond of Southern Lehigh needs 39 yards to reach 3,000 yards for his career.  Junior, Frank Dangello of Northwestern broke his own single season record with his 13th td pass of the season vs Bangor.  Dangello now has 25 career td passes and also went over 2,000 yards for his career (2,080).

RECEIVING: Paryss Marshall of Catasauqua owns all 3 career school records now.  His career totals are 90 catches for 1,781 yards and 28 td receptions.  Tyshyn Harmon of Dieruff caught 10 passes last week vs Stroudsburg to tie the Huskie single season record.  Dan Joseph (1968) and Terry Breidinger (1988) also had 10 catches in a game.  Harmon now has 41 catches for 648 yards for the season.  Harmon’s yardage moves him by speedsters Stacey McCarthy and Tiquan Birch and into 5th place at Dieruff for a single season.  RJ Sarajian of PM East has 36 receptions this year and is now tied for 3rd place at the school with Charles Lanier and Andrew Ward.  Jacob Del Priore of Southern Lehigh still leads the District active players with 45 receptions this season and 125 career receptions.  Marshall is leading the District with 806 receiving yards.

THE PAST AND THE PRESENT:  In 1980, Whitehall was the East Penn Conference Champions.  Mark Bonshak would rush for 1,017 yards and score 20 td’s as Whitehall finished the season with a 9-2 record.  Ten years later, brother Doug would rush for 1,128 yards on only 148 caries and score 25 td’s.  Doug would also catch 23 passes for 480 yards.  He would finish his Zephyr career with 2,010 yards rushing, 649 yards receiving and 32 td’s.  Current Zephyr Ryan Bonshak (Mark’s son) rushed for a td and had 2 interceptions in Whitehall’s 31-14 win over Easton last week.  For the season, Bonshak has 438 yards rushing (6 td’s), 14 receptions for 183 yards (2 td’s) and leads the team in tackles (64), interceptions (5 for 123 yards), punt return yardage (43) and kick-off return yardage (335).  That’s 1,122 total yards through 9 games.
