When you think of York Catholic High School, the first thing that probably comes to mind is their powerful girl’s basketball team, which has made five consecutive trips to the PIAA “AA” championship game.

Keep an eye out for what’s going down on the gridiron, too. The Fighting Irish have two potential Division-1 prospects, in wide receiver Gary Laucks and kicker Brett Moore, respectively.

Laucks has not received any offers at present, but has generated interest from five D-1 programs – Kansas, Ohio, Rutgers, Temple and Virginia.

In his two varsity seasons, Laucks was consistent with his statistical production. He caught 50 passes for 668 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009, averaging 13.36 yards per catch. As a sophomore, Laucks hauled in 40 passes for 645 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per catch.

Moore, meanwhile, may be one of the better kickers in the District 3 landscape, regardless of classification. He has generated interest from Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.

Just generating interest from Virginia Tech is impressive enough, as the Hokies are consistently noted for their strong special teams units year in and year out.

Moore converted 17 extra points and made four field goals last season, accounting for 29 of York Catholic’s 244 points scored.

The Irish finished the ’09 season with a 7-5 record.
